PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS-Chapter 1815: Make a better choice
Chapter 1815: Make a better choice
"So, will you just die for everyone’s sake?"
Zoren’s gaze on Nathalie lowered as he let out a shallow breath. "Would I die for everyone?"
Maybe.
When Zoren woke up in this lifetime, he didn’t have a reason to live. If anything, just like Nathalie, he also believed he should simply die. That his life meant nothing, but his death might.
For the longest time, he believed in that.
Even when his brain shut out all these previous memories to keep him going, his heart and soul knew he shouldn’t be there. Hence, his health simply started deteriorating on its own.
All these years, Zoren’s biggest enemy was himself.
But...
"My life does matter," he whispered, slowly gazing up to meet Nathalie’s eyes. "Because if not, they wouldn’t come here to fight the fight I already fought and won all by myself. You and I may not value it, but some people did."
Not just Old Mrs. Pierson, who was the only person Zoren held onto in the past, but also quite a lot of people, he would lose count of if he started naming them.
"And all those people... would take a bullet for me," he said. "Just because."
"How touching." Nathalie smiled. "Then, more reason for you to make sure they won’t be sacrificing for a losing battle, isn’t it?"
Zoren didn’t answer, but after a few seconds, he rocked his head.
"The code..." he trailed off. "You said you claimed it."
Nathalie chuckled and smirked. "I didn’t."
"Aren’t you afraid that I might have?"
"You wouldn’t," she returned so calmly. "Zoren, my poor nephew, there isn’t a code anymore."
Nathalie rubbed the armrest and pushed herself up, marching toward Zoren. When she stopped near his seat, she leaned her side against the table.
"Octavia1... I killed her already. If you want to see it, then you should check her study. I kept her hanging in there just to make myself feel better when I’m in a terrible mood," she mused. "And the prominent members of the Shadow Order are captive and will all burn alive tonight."
"As for the rest of the Shadow Order... I’ll deal with all of them," she added. "Hunt them one by one, starting from those on the island and then those who have already gone into hiding. And I will not stop until every single one of them is dead."
She lowered her head, blinking almost innocently. "Shadow Order... is something I never wanted to begin with. If anything, I wanted it so I could destroy it."
Because this code they had been fighting for could have been given to her so easily. But even when she met this old fool from the Shadow Order for her to claim it, it was not given to her. Therefore, Nathalie would rather not have it.
It was why she ended Octavia, the leader of the Shadow Order, and would continue to hunt them all down for wasting years of her life.
"You are a smart man," Nathalie reached out and squeezed his shoulder once. "Make a better choice."
With that, Nathalie retrieved her hand and pushed herself away from the table. She gazed down at him briefly before she resumed her steps, heading to one of the pavilion’s exits.
But as she reached the exit, she stopped.
"It was Gilbert, isn’t it?" Zoren remarked, turning his head in her direction.
Nathalie glanced back at him. "Gilbert? What about him?"
"The one who had his memories from the past," he clarified. "It’s him, not you."
This time, she turned leisurely and faced him squarely. "You think?"
"It’s been a while, that’s what he said," Zoren explained. "And when I called him by the name, he didn’t even react. And after our conversation, I realized you know nothing of the past. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have indulged with Jonathan."
She arched a brow. "And so what? It doesn’t change anything."
"It does change a lot of things," he returned. "It only means that even if I die, you will never have what I had. Just like how you failed to get what Naylani had, and failed to fool Enzo Pierson."
Because one thing had become clear for him: Nathalie chose to leave Enzo not because she had enough fun. It was because Enzo was starting to suspect things. At least, in their first life, she ended Enzo, and in this lifetime, things had just changed.
The corners of her eyes sharpened, not pleased by what he had said.
"Your father is a strange man," she commented as she turned her back on him, resuming her steps. "A very strange person."
And thinking of Enzo, Nathalie couldn’t help but feel bitter about her memories with that man. After all, Nathalie might have taken Naylani’s place temporarily out of fun, but also to know just what that man had for Naylani to change her mind.
But during all that time she was with him, Enzo didn’t touch her. He did hold her hand once, but he never did it again after that. Perhaps, it was instinct. It was why she had asked her impostor to slowly poison the man and make him disoriented, just to keep the show moving.
"Though, thankfully, she’s dead," she whispered, stopping in her tracks as she looked back to where Zoren was seated. "Thanks to you, that woman I allowed to borrow my face didn’t become a problem for me."
She smiled at Zoren. "It was a nice chat, nephew. Sadly, it is a matter of you and me, and in this lifetime, it’s me."
Her smile remained, nodding at him before she turned ever so slowly and resumed her steps. Once she reached the end of the small arched bridge, she glanced at the butler at her side.
"Let’s go," she said, and the butler lowered his head.
As she started walking, the butler followed her and paused when he was near one of their soldiers.
"Deal with him," he whispered. "And make sure to display his body outside the gates."
The soldier lowered his head and nodded. "Yes, sir."
And just like that, countless armed men rushed from the entrances of the pavilion until they surrounded the table. A few of them blocked all entrances and exits.
Zoren, on the other hand, remained seated as he gazed at the table before him. He didn’t even react despite all these rifles aimed at him.
"Octavia..." he whispered as he picked up the teacup and stared at his reflection. "... Nathalie Zorken, it’s Sybil."
But just as Zoren raised the cup to his mouth, it shattered along with the countless gunshots that were heard in the pavilion.
