Chapter 1802: Snuck in

[The Mansion]

Beep...

Slater pressed the side button hard, ensuring his device was completely silent. As soon as he did, he looked around the place he was in. Currently, he was in the mansion’s south wing, where a vast lawn featured multiple smaller buildings, such as a glass house, a few bungalows, and the entrance to the garden.

He stayed in the darker part, in the corner of the residence. Once he was sure no one was around, he checked the new incoming message from the very small device in his hand.

It read:

[Somewhere in the mansion, near the wine cellars of the main residence, there are hostages — imprisoned members of the Shadow Order. Please help them.]

Slater arched a brow and narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

’This isn’t how Penny would message me.’

A sudden spike of panic thudded in his chest, thinking that Penny was in trouble. But then, another message came.

[Miss Penny handed us the device as she was busy tending to her brother, Hugo, and the woman, Mint. She’s also recovering communication with the other teams. I am a member of the Shadow Order, Ralph.]

Slater read that a second time, his mind debating whether he should believe it or not. But knowing Penny and how she had already gotten to know the Madam of the Shadow Order, this wasn’t impossible.

Hence, he replied quickly and tucked the device into his "uniform." After all, Slater had gotten in here by taking down a few members on duty, changing into their clothes, and then messing his hair until most of it was reaching past his brows and near his eyes. freewёbnoνel-com

"Near the wine cellar," he whispered, his back pressed against the wall as he looked left and right.

He didn’t know where the wine cellar was, but he’d figure it out on his own. With that in mind, Slater peeked over the wall, and when he didn’t see anything, he peeled his back from it and walked away, approaching the mansion’s side entrance.

He caught a few men wearing the same uniform as him idling around, armed from head to toe. They saw him, but he simply gave them a nod and didn’t stop for a second. With his confidence and lack of suspicious demeanor, the people who had caught him entering briefly glanced at him but didn’t dwell on it.

Slater had been fooling everyone for years. Therefore, acting as a demon among demons in hell wasn’t a problem. He didn’t show fear or nervousness, casually entering the mansion just like that.

From the entrance, he caught a few men on guard.

All of them were just standing, their eyes moving to where Slater was.

Slater stopped, his hands on the sliding door behind him. He glanced at all of them before he closed the door behind him. He didn’t say a word and just walked inside, passing two of the men before one of them spoke.

"Wait."

Slater’s calm steps slowed down, still maintaining a flat expression. He then slowly turned and faced the guy, watching the latter stop.

"What are you doing?" asked the person, looking him up and down.

Slater blinked, unfazed. "I’m headed to the wine cellar."

"Wine cellar?"

"I was told to temporarily take someone else’s shift to watch over the place there," he said. "The Madam had sent him with the others tonight."

Silence.

No one answered Slater as they all just stared at him in pure silence. The man in front of him just stared at him with slightly narrowed eyes. But Slater remained calm.

"The wine cellar, huh?" the man repeated, checking him once more before nodding.

Tonight was extra hectic, as many were sent out to deal with the pests on the island. So, having someone who was supposed to be guarding an area outside take someone else’s shift wasn’t surprising. Just like them, they were normally stationed somewhere else, but because of tonight, they were guarding this entrance in case an enemy snuck in.

"I see." The man nodded once more before he jerked his chin. "Go."

Slater blinked slowly and lowered his head, turning on his heel to resume his steps. But as he did, his steps slowed as he caught two paths in the corner—one to the right and one to the left.

His eyes darted between the two exits, trying to think of what to do with all the eyes following him.

Slater clasped his hands into fists, coming closer to the point where he had to choose which way to go. He drew a deep breath and closed his eyes briefly.

’Screw it,’ he thought, taking a step to the right and making a turn. As soon as he did, he tried to slow down once more to check if any of the men would stop him. They didn’t.

Yet, for some reason, he stopped and bumped something on the way, picking it up.

"Oops," he blurted out, looking back at them apologetically. "I’ll pick it up, then go."

"Don’t bother," the man who approached him earlier hissed, casting a look at another of his comrades. "Pick those up."

When he said that, he faced Slater once more. "You go. Someone’s going to pick them up later, so be there before those rascals do something."

While saying that, he jerked his chin in a direction. And if there was anything Slater realized from his first and current life, it was that sometimes, people give others answers without them realizing it. Just like how the man jerked his chin in the opposite direction that Slater was supposed to take.

Slater smiled and nodded. "Yes."

With that, Slater resumed his steps and this time, changed his route to the other side. As he shifted direction, everyone just watched him quietly before they looked at each other.

"For a second, I thought he didn’t know the way," one of them muttered.

"Maybe he’s just nervous," another man shrugged. "Everyone’s a bit nervous tonight."

The person who approached Slater kept his eyes on where Slater went before he peeled his gaze away. "Stop idling and focus. The big boss already said that the enemy might try to sneak in. Don’t let that happen."

Little did they know, someone had already snuck in, and they let him go so easily.
