Chapter 1798: Hopefully, they find him while he is still alive.

Stopping was a risk Hugo was willing to take upon catching Mint inside the truck. Even though he knew these guys might not be the same group as the ones he had been fighting previously, and that these guys were more dangerous with how they handled their weapons, he still pulled over.

Mint was with them, after all, and he needed to know if she was alright.

Seated in the driver’s seat, Hugo didn’t jump out immediately. Instead, he gazed at the truck that had pulled over before him.

The men inside jumped out of the truck, but they didn’t approach him. Instead, they raised their hands. Even so, that didn’t earn them Hugo’s complacency—not with those weapons still wrapped around their bodies.

Reaching for his rifle on the passenger seat, Hugo opened the door and stepped out. He grimaced as his leg ached intensely, but he quickly shrugged it off. He straightened his back, eyeing the people who hadn’t moved away from the truck.

"We’re not here to fight," one of the men shouted at him. "However, if you shoot, we will."

Hugo clasped his rifle even tighter, his eyes sharp as he studied them. "I’m not going to shoot unless you give me a reason to."

For a moment, silence fell. Neither of them seemed about to back down, ready to shoot each other if there was any suspicious reason.

"Give her to me," Hugo demanded. "That woman in your truck. Is she hurt?"

"No!" the man yelled back. "She was tranquilized, but she’s—she’s alive. Though she might have a few grazes here and there from the rough ride."

Hugo assessed the man speaking and the other people in the truck, and the two who had jumped off of it.

"Drop her over there!" Hugo negotiated. "Once you leave, I’ll take her with me!"

The men looked at each other, some shrugging.

"I don’t see any problem with that," said one of the guys. "We don’t need her anyway, and Nathalie Zorken has already done it."

"He’s right," the other guy standing on the other side added. "We don’t need her."

The guy in the middle nodded as he thought about it. He looked back at the truck, signaling the others to carry Mint out. When the other men walked back to get Mint, the man faced Hugo once more.

"We’ll leave her over this side," he shouted at Hugo. "We already tried to administer an antidote to her, but it’s not as effective. So, she’ll be unconscious for quite some time."

Hugo nodded and didn’t answer. He just stood behind the open door, watching as someone walked to the entrance of the truck, carrying Mint in his arms. Seeing her, he perked up, only to wince at his aching leg.

"Damn..." he hissed, gazing down as he clasped his leg.

Meanwhile, the man in the middle watched as his comrades helped each other carry Mint out of the truck. Their initial plan was to give Mint a chance to wreak havoc in the Mansion. If she did, that would raise their chances of rescuing the other hostages.

But since Nathalie ordered her men to kill them, that plan was no longer valid. After all, they wouldn’t be able to set foot in the Mansion at all.

The man (who saved Mint) turned to Hugo to tell him something. His voice, however, couldn’t even come out when he noticed the spot Hugo was standing on. Hugo was standing behind the open door of the vehicle, but that didn’t hide the spot he was standing on.

What he saw was blood dripping from Hugo.

And by how much the red fluid crawled underneath his foot, it showed that whatever injury Hugo had was not light.

"Stop that," the man in the middle spoke, and his remark quickly made Hugo turn to him. "We can’t leave her alone with you."

Hugo’s eyes burned. "What?"

"You’re dying." The man remarked, jerking his chin at Hugo’s feet. "Bleeding to death. Even before you can go anywhere, you’ll die."

Hugo clasped his leg even more tightly to stop the bleeding, teeth clenched. He never took his eyes off the group, his mind running at its fastest speed. freёweɓnovel_com

’I’ve been enduring this pain, but with the painkiller wearing off, it feels like it’s going to fall off,’ he thought to himself. ’I can’t fight these guys.’

His chances were fifty-fifty at his best, but in this state? Suicide.

"Hey." Suddenly, the guy standing next to the person who had been talking to Hugo turned to him. "Even if he bleeds to death, it’s not our problem."

"Just let them be," the other one uttered. "We only caught this woman under that bitch’s order. But now that she’s lost interest in the Order, there’s no reason for us to keep her or care about them."

The others, who were carrying Mint, also spoke their minds. However, the one in the middle remained quiet and just stared at Hugo.

"Where are your men?" he asked Hugo, ignoring the other guy’s opinion.

Hugo huffed, his complexion already paling even more. "They’re here," he said. "They’ll come for me."

Hopefully, they find him while he is still alive.

"You come with us and we’ll prolong your life," the man offered. "In exchange, let me borrow your men."

Hugo scoffed. "Borrow?"

"I do not trust you," he replied, his expression stern but his voice laced with sincerity. "However, if you’re fighting Nathalie Zorken, then my enemy’s enemy is my friend. We’ll give you support and brief your men on the routes. On top of that, I have something here that could numb the pain temporarily."

The man paused, his eyes never leaving Hugo’s. "In exchange for that, I want you to help us. Some of our friends are in the Mansion as hostages. Help us rescue them while we fight them head-on."

Hearing this, the other men raised their brows as they looked at the man with different emotions in their eyes. But after a second, they nodded and turned to face Hugo.

The Madam of the Shadow Order had already announced that she wouldn’t participate in any battle on this island. And had kept a portion of the Order under Nathalie’s control to watch over the hostages. They had no idea of the big reason behind this decision, but that didn’t matter right now.

If they rescued the hostages, then they were sure the other forces of the Shadow Order nearby would come.

"What do you think?" the man exclaimed. "I give you my word, and I never go back on my own words. If you agree—"

The man stopped as he caught a light from behind Hugo. He furrowed his brows, watching a truck at the end of the path. Not just him, but the other men as well.

Seeing their expressions, Hugo furrowed his brows and looked back. There, he saw another truck coming in their direction.

"Shit—" he hissed, about to jump in the truck, when the man spoke.

"That’s—" the man furrowed his brows, narrowing his eyes. "Isn’t that one of the Madam’s collection?"

"Madam?" Hugo turned to the men, then back at the incoming truck.

All the men paused and just watched until the truck reached them. But alas, instead of pulling over or attacking them, the truck just drove past them at high speed.

"..."

They followed the vehicle with their gaze, only to see its rear lights turn red. Then, the new truck drove in reverse, before taking up the entire road as it turned around back to them.

"Did Nathalie get her hands on them?!" One of the men readied his rifle to shoot, only to see someone crawling from the back and on top of the truck’s cab.

The person waved both hands, arms stretched for a bigger wave. When it got a bit closer, they finally heard the faint yelling.

"Second Brother~!"

Hugo’s brows knitted, eyeing the person on top of the truck’s cab through his blurring vision, until he finally recognized the voice.

"Pe—Penny?!"
