Chapter 319: B3: C109: Shadowfell Versus Lovewar

Lucy Shadowfell Darkrun took a step out of her sanctum for the first time in months, at least with her true body.

She wore a shadowy veil over her face and a heavy combination of scarves, cowls, and cloaks above a gothic gown with full sleeves and gloves and thick skull-crushing boots. Nothing about her true body was visible, which had always remained the case even when she was dropped here as a one-day-old baby with too much awareness.

When she left her sanctum, she rode down the deep shadow her home cast upon God Land, the Core World. Above her, the Star Core shone brighter than any sun across all the realms of Infinita, its center golden white while surrounded by a rainbow halo.

Divine vistas with endless habitats and biomes of the highest levels and qualities spread about in all directions from the shaded wastelands beneath Lucy’s sanctum.

Thunderous oceans clamored and roared up at the burning clouds that twisted like living nebulae filled with newly born stars and worlds. Voracious trees grasped at monstrous angels that roamed for those who were unworthy or unable to endure the rigors of God Land. And God Rankers battled other God Rankers with techniques and powers that would easily demolish the many mortal worlds in the realms below.

It was here, at the peak of universal power where the mightiest beings of the Star System could grow and clash, that Lucy found her motivations to be at their most miserable. She didn’t care for the other gods as much as she would pretend to care.

She cared more-so for the struggles of mortals.

Or for those with mortal sensibilities.

Hence, Lucy took a simple path that steered away from the more active areas of God Land. Though she didn’t hide herself, even though she could.

The act of hiding would draw attention even faster from those who were just about talented enough to track her. By moving in the open, her true detractors would take more time to watch her before they acted.

She was also holding back her tears, so there was less corruption following her footsteps, alleviating some burden from the Star System. Her most ardent detractors and harassers would feel even more confident in taking their time before they struck, letting Lucy be for now.

For the most part, even if Lucy preferred the cool and shady space within her sanctum, the walk wasn’t a bad one. It remained peaceful, even though she knew her peace wouldn’t last for long.

Before anything interrupted her, she took in the primal and violent nature of God Land all around her. It was as close to being primeval and true to the origins as it could get despite its universal constraints.

The art and magic were still too primitive and too weak compared to grander creations of chaos and change that Lucy knew was out there. But she kept that to herself like she kept many secrets she knew from the day she was dropped here.

“ACCURSED SHADOWFELL! I challenge you!” Shouted one of those cultivator types.

They were the most annoying in God Land. Their growth was the slowest compared to the usual adventurer, but their foundations turned them into the most unyielding cockroaches among the God Rankers.

Still, Lucy put on pretenses to entertain the would-be challenger. She’d gotten better at pretending ever since the Darkrun Apocalypse, ever since she truly fell for her former master – her husband.

“Have you not heard what happened to the last cultivator?” Lucy spoke with enough inflection to sound like she was sneering through her veil. “I took his dao and left him an immortal husk of his former self. That should’ve been enough warning for you, little godling.”

“You think that will spare you from my judgment, horrid wench! Nay! That has only stroked my fires to see you broken and cast down once and for all! Fear the wrath of the Star Hand Blade!”

The cultivator’s hands lit with many stars. And from those stars, each light shone with the sharpest edges one could find among the God Rankers.

Such sharpness could split mortal worlds into minced pieces. But here on God Land, it was just another pathetic showing of inferior power that looked basic to Lucy.

She shedded a tear for the cultivator, for he was a frog in a well. When he struck at her with a radiant hand chop, Lucy caught her single tear on her gloved finger and flicked it at his chest.

The single tear hollowed his chest and turned him into something else before he had a chance to even cry. He couldn’t even find solace in death as Lucy’s tragic power overtook his profile, the magic of the Star System, and his soul.

He became another toy for her collection.

With a flick of her layered clothing, she brought him into her shaded fold and made him disappear, just like many others before him. Maybe she would add him to her wall in her sanctum. Or use him for other dreary games or to improve her craft.

Lucy sighed. She closed her eyes and focused her omni-awareness on all the worlds where her influence existed. She rarely needed the guidance of the System, unlike the other major gods of the good and evil alignment.

Her omniscient power came naturally to her, and what she saw across the entire universe was to her liking, except for Ariana’s maneuvers.

The Dragoness was stirring more, doing whatever she pleased without checking in on Lucy. Ariana must’ve known by now that Lucy wasn’t on her side, but The Dragoness hadn’t discovered the full extent to Lucy’s betrayal yet.

Or maybe she had and was playing stupid. Lucy wasn’t sure. She was as scared of Ariana just like everyone else.

Still, things were going accordingly, especially Lucy’s manipulations in the Doulos Enslavement System.

She was a bit excited about that, actually. Her husband had no idea how far she would go to flip something so horrid into a better place. It would frankly shock him once she finished re-molding it.

She couldn’t do the same here at the Star System. She had certain restrictions from birth that she would like kept under wraps.

At the end of her walk across the myriad vistas of God Land, where even moons and stars took on humanoid forms to challenge the God Rankers, Lucy stood at the entrance to the sanctum of Valerie Lovewar.

It was an open secret that Valerie had come from the World of Castles and Caverns just like Purehome, hence her Sanctum was a heavily fortified fortress with high ramparts and many powerful siege weapons. Her followers, God Rankers, valkyries, and other godly warrior types, would usually conduct patrols around her sanctum. They would sometimes invite others to join their master’s divine army and grow their combative might together.

Lucy looked up as a majority of that army stood on the ramparts or floated in the tumultuous skies above with all of their weapons and magic pointed in her direction.

Standing at the front with the arched entrance between them was the fiercely beautiful and hardworking Valerie Lovewar. On her left arm was a round shield, and in her right hand was a spear. She wore nothing but light armor that covered the essentials while carrying a short sword sheathed on her hip.

Her silver eyes burned with focused fury that seemed to spear through Lucy.

“Shadowfell, we cannot be friends any longer. From this day on, we are enemies. Please go back to your sanctum in peace for now, because the next time you come here … I will …”

“You will do what, Valerie?”

The good goddess tensed, brow furrowing. “I will destroy you!”

Lucy laughed. To her surprise, it was a genuine laugh, which came with such rich emotions that she nearly burst into uncontrollable tears.

She had the problem of not being able to feel emotions like others, or feeling dull and horrid most of the time. She felt more emotion when there were genuine tragedies abound.

But as of late, she’d felt more because of Zarian and all the little mortal madness that surrounded him and his people. She’d thought the Darkrun Apocalypse and the total destruction of universes and dimensions would grant her peak emotions.

Apparently, that wasn’t the case.

Having friends and likeable relationships sweetened and traumatized Lucy decently well, too.

All of Valerie’s godly soldiers prepared to strike the moment they heard a single sob, but Lucy held back her tears at the last moment. She swayed listlessly from side to side, drunk off the wonderful burst of pain Valerie’s betrayal inflicted upon Lucy’s cold and blackened hearts. Then Lucy came to a simple answer to this turn of events.

“No,” Lucy said.

Valerie tensed even more. “No, you won’t turn back in peace?!”

“No, I won’t accept the end of our friendship. You do not get to stop being my friend just because you are confused and lost. You should, however, stop letting Kingsblood whisper into your ear, Valerie. You know he can be more of a snake than even Sinfeast.”

Valerie snapped. “Your husband ate me. He ended me! All that I worked for, and it was gone! I still can’t get over that. And you … I can’t get over how you can just do what you do. You even admitted you can corrupt and destroy us all just like the other universe.”

“Yes, I can,” Lucy said, putting aside her restrictions.

“I can’t be friends with you. I’m … supposed to be a Good Goddess. I worked and sacrificed so much for me to make it here. But when I’m around you and the Darkruns! It all feels pointless!”

“That is because you are weak, dear.”

Valerie screamed, and her army roared with challenge.

Lucy could see the tragedy that would come from this fight if it were to happen. Lucy would easily win, but that would go against her plans.

Her detractors and harassers would want her to put down Valerie and open up another major seat among the Good Gods for someone more loyal to their cause. They wanted this tragic rift, and Lucy could easily give it to them.

Lucy refused.

The Ultra Goddess lowered down.

Valerie and all her soldiers went silent with shock as Lucy Shadowfell Darkrun knelt and bowed.

“Please don’t turn me away. You’re my best friend. I don’t want to lose you,” Lucy said, holding back her tears, despite how much they wanted to gush out.

Valerie wasn’t the smartest of the major gods, but she was one of the most practical. She could sense how terribly this could all end for her even if Lucy was showing weakness. Ironically, something like this from Lucy was the last thing they all wanted. It was too tragic.

Valerie was also the more honorable sort.

She was easy to embarrass and break.

Ten minutes later, Lucy sat in Valerie’s parlor, both goddesses lounging in their more relaxed forms. Small and winged servants fluttered about to fan them, offer treats, and provide massages. Lucy always declined the massage from the little cherubs while Valerie couldn’t go without their attention unless she was training or warring.

“It really was Kingsblood who got into my head,” Valerie admitted with great shame. “I thought you would’ve fought me, too.”

“And what? Kill you?” Lucy asked.

“Well … it would’ve proven Kingsblood right.” Valerie buried her face into the cushions. “At least I would go out on my own terms than …”

She trailed off as her face rose, eyes turning toward the giant mirror on the wall. Instead of reflecting the parlor, it showed Zarian studying his black magic grimoire intensely while his full-bodied parasite practiced combat maneuvers at shocking speeds for their level and rank.

Lucy felt a deep and painful throb inside of her chest at the sight of her husband. It wasn’t quite love at first sight, but Lucy felt more than she could ever express. It hurt even more that his heart was set on another woman. A true mortal challenging the will of the heavens.

Lucy tried not to cry.

Valerie and her little servants froze in fear. They couldn’t help it. Lucy could do a lot of damage with a few tears. Even in Valerie’s sanctum, where her divine reign should be at its strongest, Lucy could corrupt and damage much.

Thankfully, Lucy held back her tears, and nothing went amiss.

“I’m sorry,” Valerie said in a rush. “What I did out there was shitty. I … I lost courage. I thought wrongly of you. Good, evil, it’s all just two sides of the same coin, but I lost sight of that because…”

“You’re scared.”

Valerie nodded. “I can’t stop being afraid. I died in that darkness. Everything I’ve done to reach my position felt like smoke and lies. It’s so frustrating.”

Lucy reached over and collected the tears off of Valerie’s face. They both knew how dangerous it was for Lucy to collect tears of any god, Sinfeast being the prime example of a man awaiting the executioner’s axe.

Yet, Valerie allowed Lucy to have her tears, even as she shuddered from the vulnerability of it all.

Lucy lifted her veil slightly, where only oily shadows could be seen. She consumed the tears, letting out a moan of pleasure at the taste of them. They were sweet, earnest, and filled with mortal hope intertwined with divine potential. Or was it the other way around? Mortal potential and divine hope?

Lucy smacked her lips a few times before making a grand decision. “Would you like to become an Ultra Goddess, Valerie?”

At faster than light speeds, Valerie killed every servant within the parlor and locked down the room with wards.

“Lucy! You can’t just say those things without warning me!” Valerie hissed. “Do you know how badly all the others want to be ultra?”

Lucy looked at the splatter of divine blood where servants had once existed. Ah, yes, Valerie could be ruthless, too.

“Don’t do that again. I do not blame you for your caution, but such merciless actions will upset my husband. And upsetting him in the right ways is an art form reserved mostly for me.” Lucy watched as Valerie wilted. “And as much as you fear him, if you want to become an Ultra Goddess, Valerie, it’s time for you to accept him and accept change.”

Her eyes widened. “No.”

“Yes. It’s time we join as the sixth and seventh members of the freedom alignment.”

Valerie chewed on the edge of her lip. Then she let out a long sigh. “Okay … but you do know we’ll lose a lot of our power provided by the traditional alignments, right? I don’t think I can do as well with free good. It’s too loose and unstructured. And what would you be like with free evil?”

“The same.” Lucy chuckled with some mirth. “I haven’t really used my evil alignment.”

Valerie gawked. “Why are you freaking Ultra Gods so strong?!”

“You will understand one day, dear. Now, are you ready for your punishment for betraying me and making me bow like that? It’ll serve as your first test to become an Ultra Goddess.”

“Uhhh. Sure. What is it?”

“You’re going to kill Kingsblood permanently, dear.”

Valerie opened and closed her mouth. Before she could protest, Lucy hushed at her and looked up at the viewing mirror.

On the outside, Lucy was perfectly still, as if she wasn’t alive. On the inside, she was a mess, barely keeping it all together. Her emotions became too wild and extreme for even her as she watched her husband prepare to risk his life and the entire universe and beyond to challenge the super dungeon once more.

“What if he dies again and there is no re-do?” Valerie asked quietly.

“I will sacrifice a part of me to help you survive. Though at a great cost.”

“No, Lucy.” Valerie sighed. “I … I can’t ask that from you. It’s too one-sided. I betrayed you once already and forced you to do what you did. I can’t take anything more from you without reciprocating.”

“Then pray, dear, that my husband doesn’t fail.” Lucy chuckled. “Because that Christian friend of his might have a point. Laying your burdens at the feet of a higher power is sometimes the only answer.”

Valerie grimaced at that. But she closed her eyes and prayed anyway, and Lucy watched with rapt attention as her husband stood on the edge of a cliff.

If it wasn’t for his acceptance of Lovewar, then Valerie wouldn’t be able to follow his journey so closely during the tournament. Most of the other gods were completely clueless, so it was both dramatic and rare to witness the Dark Emperor truly struggle. But the next words out of his mouth sent shivers from the top of Lucy’s head to the tip of her toes.

“Motherfucker, I think I solved the gravity spell,” Zarian said. “I solved the greatest fucking spell of all spells!”
