Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Memories

"Into the tiger’s den, to get the tiger cub."

Scarlett Shaw calmly analyzed.

"Roman Lawson, although not too discreet in some aspects, has loosened his grip, which suggests he has intentions to collaborate with Veridian. Those big companies have high credibility and won’t easily go back on their word. I’ll be extra cautious tomorrow to prevent any unexpected events."

Skyler Miller pondered for a moment and said, "That sounds fine, we shouldn’t come here for nothing. I’ll join you tomorrow and wait outside. If anything happens, contact me anytime."

Scarlett nodded in agreement.

With work matters temporarily put aside, Skyler suggested, "Since we have nothing else to do today, and we’re already here, shall we check out the back?"

Behind the manor was a lush green lawn, the wedding arch and guest seats were already arranged.

There weren’t many seats, but the guests attending were influential figures. Skyler spotted several faces he’d only seen in financial magazines and on TV, and couldn’t help but exclaim:

"Looks like Zoe Sutton’s husband is quite the figure in Bryland. Inviting these distinguished guests isn’t something just anyone can do."

"In this light, Zoe Sutton leaving President Ford wasn’t exactly unreasonable. For people from such backgrounds, love isn’t as meaningful; it’s more about interests."

Upon hearing Skyler’s words, Scarlett’s thoughts wandered far away.

For some reason, at this very moment, past memories came flooding back.

The Shaw family, though not elite, had a thriving business before the incident, and Scarlett’s father was considered a prominent figure throughout Capitoline.

Of course, in the business world, immense fortunes often harbor tremendous dangers, and within just a few days, The Shaw Group’s financial chain broke, leading the family to bankruptcy overnight.

Benjamin Shaw had struggled up from the bottom, and although times were tough, he never lost his composure.

He patiently and gently said to Scarlett, "My Scarlett, as long as you grow up happy and have joy, Dad will take care of everything else."

Scarlett loved Benjamin and always believed in her father.

However, what she never expected was that this would be the last words Benjamin Shaw spoke to her.

After that day, Benjamin disappeared for half a month, and ultimately, his body was found by the riverside on the outskirts of Capitoline.

Taken by the police to identify the corpse, what Scarlett saw was Benjamin Shaw, extremely swollen, his posture awkward, and his skin decaying in a dreadful manner.

Her father would never again hold her, lovingly and gently call her, Scarlett.

The police said that Benjamin’s body contained traces of drugs, but whether he was involved in any illicit dealings, we will never know.

From the family’s bankruptcy to the discovery of Benjamin’s body, a whole month had passed, and Scarlett’s mother, Serena Ford, never appeared again.

If asked if Scarlett hated, of course she did.

But as her father said, she must grow up happy and joyful.

Rather than harboring hatred towards someone unloving, Scarlett preferred to let Benjamin’s spirit rest in peace.

So, even if all alone, no matter how hard the coming days might be, she must not disappoint her father.

She must strive, be brave, and live happily.

"Scarlett, are you okay?"

Skyler turned back and saw Scarlett’s reddened eyes, startled, showing concern.

Scarlett came back to herself, concealed her emotions, and smiled, "It’s nothing, just suddenly remembered my father."

Although Skyler didn’t know much about Scarlett’s past family situation, he did know she always lived alone. About to say something, Scarlett shifted the conversation first, pointing afar:

"Zoe Sutton has come out."

Skyler’s gaze followed.

Zoe Sutton’s wedding ceremony was grand and magnificent, and Scarlett was somewhat absent-minded. During the exchange of rings by the couple, her gaze fell to the front, her peripheral vision caught Julian Ford sitting in the first row on the other side, looking sharp in a suit, calmly watching Zoe Sutton.

Scarlett felt a slight pang in her chest.

Skyler also saw Julian Ford, and whispered, "So President Ford went abroad to attend Zoe Sutton’s wedding. It seems they ended things on decent terms. Do you think President Ford still has feelings for Zoe Sutton?"

Skyler casually asked, chatting away.

To Scarlett, it stirred uncontrollable bitterness.

Yet this bitterness was self-inflicted, unspeakable, and had to be endured.

In careful reflection, during her first night with Julian Ford, his frenetic intensity during the act was, most likely, a post-breakup symptom with Zoe Sutton.

Scarlett sighed quietly, withdrawing her gaze from Julian Ford. However, when her glance inadvertently skimmed past people at the back row, she froze suddenly, feeling icy cold.

This bone-chilling sensation, piercing her heart, last occurred when she saw Benjamin Shaw’s decaying corpse.

And this time—

The woman reflected in her pupils, dressed in a sophisticated, high-class gown, makeup impeccable, demeanor elegant, laughing and chatting amicably with those around her.

The woman’s face, in an instant, overlapped with the face of her mother, Serena Ford, from memory.

Scarlett was nearly frozen in her seat, unable to move.

Her gaze fixed furiously on the woman’s face, like a sharp blade, filled with an unmistakable hatred in her eyes. It seemed this intense hatred, so overwhelming, made the woman suddenly turn her head, their eyes meeting.

The woman’s almond-shaped eyes danced briefly, and she shifted her gaze from Scarlett’s face, showing no ripples, continuing to chat with the others.

Scarlett kept staring at the woman’s direction.

Naturally, she didn’t notice Julian Ford’s gaze fleeting across her face, profound and unfathomable.

Scarlett snapped back to reality during the bouquet toss at the end of the wedding ceremony. Many people crowded towards the newlyweds, she stood at the back, expressionless, watching the surging crowd.

The woman resembling Serena Ford, in a black gown, walked away gracefully and unhurried.

Scarlett stood in place, took out her phone and silently snapped a photo of the woman.

Walking away from the crowd, she dialed Aaron Carson’s number. Once connected, she immediately said, "Rhonda, you previously said you’d help me investigate my mother, does that still stand?"

"Of course."

Aaron Carson replied without hesitation.

He had promised such and naturally wouldn’t renege, besides, even without Scarlett reminding, he had searched for Serena Ford’s information, but nothing substantial came up.

Now that Scarlett brought it up, Aaron Carson instantly sensed something and said, "Do you have news?"

Scarlett: "I’ll send you a photo; help me look into the woman in it, she attended Zoe Sutton’s wedding today. I figure since you can get a hold of Zoe Sutton’s wedding invitation, you might trace that line."

Aaron Carson: "Sure, send it to me, I’ll think of something."

Scarlett expressed her gratitude, "Thank you."

Aaron Carson indeed had a way to investigate.

What he hadn’t mentioned to Scarlett was that the invitation actually came from Julian Ford.
