Chapter 96: The Little Nutcracker [R18]

Alton pulled his army cap off his head and stuck it awkwardly in his pocket, hiding his hard-on as best he could.

He kicked Delphi’s t-shirt and bra behind the tree just as Feifei burst into the clearing, looking wildly left and right for her friend and leader.

"Delphi! Delphi!" she called. "Where’s Delphi, General? Didn’t you hear that scream?"

"I certainly did," he said crossly. "Delphi’s fine, Feifei. She had to go shushu and a huge spider crawled over her foot."

Feifei looked around uncertainly, not sure whether to believe the man.

"Delphi?" she called again, more quietly and less panicked this time.

"I’m fine Feifei," Delphi called from inside the conifer bush, her voice strained and high as she lay on her back, her eyes closed, her hand covering her face, breathing deeply as she struggled to come back to earth.

"Okay then, as long as you’re fine," said Feifei, still unconvinced, as she backed out of the conifer garden.

Alton followed her out, shoving his cap back on his head crankily. Feifei’s ’help’ had done the trick taking the wind out of his sails.

He emerged to find Han helping Magnus with Winter’s archery skills. The soldier stood behind the girl, his arms wrapped tightly around her, helping her align her body with the bow and the target.

"Han!" he roared angrily. "Did I ask you to caress Winter, or to keep doing your ride-bys?"

Han flinched and turned to salute. "You asked me to do ride-bys General. I apologise sir!"

"Drop and give me fifty, private!"

Han immediately dropped to the ground and started doing push-ups while Winter watched on in dismay.

"General, I..." Winter said in a small voice.

"Don’t you start too, Private Berry!" he shouted. Winter flinched. "You can drop and give me twenty!"

Winter clambered down next to Han, feeling better that she was punished too, when she was the one who had asked him for help.

"Even the punishments are lighter for the girls," whispered Niko to Baer sourly.

"What was that, Lieutenant?" bawled the general. "Care to share it with the group?"

"Sir, no Sir!" shouted Niko, saluting.

"You can give me a perimeter run then Lieutenant. Why are you still standing there? Hop to it!"

Niko grimaced and took off for the park’s fence line, running hard.

"Anyone else have something to say?" he looked across the soldiers, daring any one of them to say a word.

General Meyer gave Feifei a particularly hard stare, dying for her to put a foot wrong... Even a hair wrong would do the trick...

She shrank back from his glare, looking apprehensively at him. She wasn’t doing anything wrong, was she? Why was he looking at her like that?

From her scratchy hideout in the conifer garden, Delphi heard the whole affair. She sighed deeply, shaking her head.

She had not done well this morning. Not good at all.

She must do better at controlling this man in future; and at stopping him from taking ’liberties’ that were incinerating her, apparently meagre, self-discipline.

---------------

Afternoon training was back in the large training room on the mats. The team sat on the bleachers waiting.

"Han is going to lead this session," Alton announced. "He’ll be taking you through a series of hand-to-hand combat matches. General Chastain and I will be observing. We have our first mission coming up in the near future, so your performance at every training session between now and then, counts."

Winter and Ruby looked at each other in dismay. Their dismal performances at the ride-and-shoot training session this morning had not got them off to a good start...

Han rose to his feet and moved into the centre of the training mat.

"We’re going to run through this series of matches using rubber knives. I’ll show you the skills I want you to demonstrate in your match, remembering they’re training matches so go hard, but don’t deliberately try to hurt your opponent. That should go without saying," he laughed.

"Winter, come out here so I can demonstrate the techniques we’re practising."

Winter skipped over to Han. He wasn’t a particularly tall man at 5’11", but he dwarfed her 5’2" frame.

"Alright Winter," he handed her a rubber knife. "Show me what you’ve got. Try and use your front and back elbow, and vary between your fist, the heel of your hand and the edge of your hand. Feet are good too."

He crouched down and motioned for her to come at him. Winter had trained in martial arts rather than hand-to-hand combat, but she did have some useful skills, including having trained with wooden knives.

She started off with a roundhouse kick, which lightly tapped Han’s chest, and then she went into a series of rapid strikes and kicks, as she had been taught. She was agile and quite strong for her height, but Han was able to meet and defend each one with ease. She struck at him with her knife, and he disarmed her, the knife flying away. She ran and picked it up, but it was rinse-and-repeat every time.

On her fourth attempt, as her knife went flying, Han called out, "hold up, I’ll get it for you Winter".

Unfortunately, her kick was already pre-planned so as he knelt to pick up her knife for her, she kicked him between the legs. It wasn’t the hard kick of a man, but it was hard enough.

He toppled over sideways, and the men all groaned in commiseration.

"Oh no! Han, I’m so sorry," Winter jumped up and down on the spot, not knowing what to do. "I didn’t know you were stopping the fight. I’m sorry! What can I do?" she crouched down next to him.

"Kiss it better," called Niko.

"It needs a band-aid," said Baer.

"You’d better see how it’s looking, it might be bruised," said Cormac.

She stood back up hurriedly and looked at them with wide eyes, one finger to her lips.

"I think I need to educate you girls about the male anatomy," said Niko. "You might not know this but..."

"No thank you, Lieutenant," interrupted General Meyer. "You’ve done more than enough educating of these women about the male sex organs. I’ll thank you to refrain from any more gratuitous educating."

Alton walked over to Han and helped him back to his feet.

Winter was wringing her hands wretchedly. "Sorry Han, I’m very sorry," she kept whispering.

He looked over at her, his face still drawn with pain.

"It’s fine Winter. I’m fine, see?"

He painfully pulled himself back to a straightened standing position his eyes fluttering with the effort.

"Oh, you don’t look fine. What can I do?" she asked helplessly.

"We told you, kiss..." Niko tried again.

"Gentlemen!" General Meyer interrupted. "Thank you for your kind suggestions but that’s enough tormenting your fellow soldier," he emphasised the last two words, "Private Berry".

"Han’s after Berry’s cherry," whispered Baer to Niko, and they both snickered.

"Alright Private Becker!" General Meyer shouted. "You seem to have plenty of vigour, come up here and show us what you’ve got. Wolf, you’re on against Baer."
