Chapter 133: You’re My Ex, Loveday

Baer yawned widely as he sat at the breakfast table at dawn the next morning.

Zero sleep probably hadn’t been his best idea given the day that lay ahead, but no regrets, it was a fun night.

"Thanks for kicking me out of our room last night," complained Niko.

"You were fine man, I’m sure you found somewhere else to kip."

"I did, but there was no blanket and no PJ’s. I was cold," he glared at his friend.

Baer made a little girl crying gesture, rubbing his fist in his eye, and Niko glowered at him, pushing his fist down.

"I had a good reason, man, you know that," Baer gave a self-satisfied little smile, raising his eyebrows.

"Yes, it’s a poorly kept secret now all over the base now. I hope you’re prepared to follow through or you’ll be enemy number one with the girls."

Niko gave him a look that said, ’you’ve made you bed, now lie in it’.

"What, really?" asked Baer with concern. "What do you mean it’s all over the base? How did that happen?"

"Yup, it’s everywhere. It’s the gossip of the day," Niko said with satisfaction. "Loveday already knew, I didn’t have to tell her anything."

"Really? Loveday knew I was with Arrie? This bloody place leaks like a sieve. Who’s talking out of school?"

"Girl talk," said Niko confidently. "Girls tell each other everything. There are no secrets. They’ll share the size of your dick with each other."

Niko’s was huge, so he hoped that was true...

Baer stood up in a hurry, scraping his chair back. He scanned the dining room, looking for Loveday. She was just walking through the doors, so he hurried over to her and grabbed her by the arm.

"Can we talk?" he asked her urgently.

"Does it have to be right now, Baer?" said Loveday sleepily, blinking at him. "I was hoping for some breakfast before we head out this morning."

"It won’t take long," he steered her back out of the dining room and around the corner where a bench seat sat outside an office.

He sat Loveday down on the bench seat, looking up and down the hallway, which was empty.

He didn’t waste any time. "Niko told me you know about me and Arrie?"

Arrie, who was about to round the corner, stopped dead in her tracks on hearing Baer say her name.

She nodded. "Yeah. Arrie asked me before she decided to act on her feelings, and I gave her my blessing."

Arrie heard Loveday’s voice. She thought about leaving, but she really didn’t want to make a sound in case she was heard, and they thought she had been deliberately eavesdropping.

She crept across to the bubbler so it might seem like she was innocently having a drink if anyone came by.

"Really?" asked Baer. "You gave her your blessing?" he sounded confused.

Loveday nodded again.

Baer didn’t know if that was a good or a bad thing.

"Okay," he said slowly. "Does that mean you’re okay with the concept of sister wives?" he asked her as delicately as he could.

"Absolutely not, no. I don’t agree with polygamy. I hope it’s banned after we win the Rebellion."

This was news to Baer.

"That’s not what you told me last time we talked about this topic after the wrestling matches. You said you were not necessarily opposed to polygamy then... Why did you give Arrie your blessing to hook up with me if you’re against polygamy?"

"She likes you, Baer. She has real feelings for you. It would be selfish of me to hold onto you when I don’t feel the same way. We’re not in a real relationship anyway."

"What do you mean you don’t feel the same way as Arrie, Loveday?" he growled.

She noticed he had dropped the ’Cherry’ nickname. No matter, she didn’t like it anyway.

"I’m sorry Baer, I just don’t feel that way about you. And it shouldn’t matter anymore, you’re together with Arrie now."

"I would never have hooked up with her if I knew it was an ’either-or’ decision!" he shouted, practically spitting in her face with anger. "You know I have feelings for you, Loveday," he said it like it was her fault.

"I’m not too sure you do, Baer. I’m guessing those feelings are probably just lust. Anyway, I think we should try shifting back a gear and just being friends. We haven’t started officially dating, so there’s nothing to peel back from."

"What do you mean we’re not fucking dating? What do you call sucking my cock? It’s not the same as shaking hands you know?"

"Don’t be crude, Baer," she frowned. "I mean we never had anything beyond the rocky beginnings of you capturing me on the headland and me honey trapping you. It was the same on your first night at the silo. Us girls were in recruitment mode, we were working."

"What the fucking fuck, Loveday!" he raised his voice at her, the hurt in his tone obvious.

"Cool," he glared at her meanly. "If that’s all that’s between us, no problem. But you can forget about this ’let’s just be friends’ bullshit. I try not to make a habit of getting it on with my friends. Let’s just call it how it is; you’re my ex and that’s how I’ll treat you."

He stood up and walked a few steps away.

"And you can find yourself a new partner for the mission too, cause it certainly ain’t gonna be me!" he called back at her, before storming off.

"Shit," Loveday breathed to herself after he’d gone.

That didn’t exactly go according to plan... 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Delphi was going to be furious about this little storm in a teacup on the first day of the mission, she thought.

Loveday sighed and got to her feet. Might as well get some breakfast, she thought pragmatically. That would be the only good thing to happen this morning by the looks of it.

Around the corner, Arrie slid down the bubbler and sat on the floor, curled into a little ball.

She felt hollow inside. Like she’d been kicked in the guts, but there was nothing there.

She closed her eyes. She was so devastated she couldn’t even cry.
