They had decided to continue with the matches, a few hours later than planned, after Feifei’s bombshell news.

Both Delphi and Alton were glassy-eyed, struggling to regain their focus.

"Time to kick off," Delphi whispered to Alton, waving her hand in front of his face. "What’s wrong with you?" she hissed at him. "She’s my best friend and Lieutenant. You don’t have a good reason to be so out of it."

"I’m a bit upset for Bo," he mumbled.

"Upset for Bo!" she whispered. "Feifei’s the one you should be upset for. Bo got his rocks off and left her holding the baby, literally."

"It’s not like that Delphi," said Alton with emotion. "You don’t have the full story."

"You can tell me the full story later, but right now, the matches need to start."

Alton rose and called to the combatants. "Up first, Cormac and Lili versus Arrie and Wolf. Hand-to-hand combat. Rubber knives as weapons."

Arrie whispered to Wolf as they made their way into the ring. The startled tone of his reply could be heard by their audience on the bleachers. They were still strategising in rapid whispers when Alton dropped his hand, signalling the start of the match.

Lili sprinted in fast and hard, like she always played it, sliding on the mats on her hip, trying to pass under Wolf’s reach and slice his Achilles with her knife as she slid past.

Unfortunately for her, Wolf was fast, and he stuck his foot out, stopping her sexy slide stone dead. He tucked his foot under her ass before she could get her dagger into him, and effectively flipped her ass-over, back to Cormac.

It was a most ungraceful flip, and she landed on her back at Cormac’s feet.

"What the hell man!" Cormac growled at Wolf, as he pulled her back to her feet. "Don’t touch my girl’s ass."

Arrie couldn’t help giggling and Lili gave her pretend angry eyes, laughing with good humour herself.

Cormac tore forwards and attempted a full-frontal assault on Wolf. Wolf’s additional height and bulk meant that Cormac wasn’t able to gain any strikes, and in fact, Wolf managed to hit Cormac a glancing blow with the dagger across his cheek.

"Oh ho," shouted Niko from the bleachers. "In the real world, that just cut your pretty face open Cormac. You wouldn’t be so pretty with a scar like that."

Cormac withdrew from the fray, scowling.

Lili flew back in, after Arrie this time. She tried another roll and slide, but Arrie did an incredible leap right over her. The little gymnast jumped almost her own height, and the watching audience gasped and clapped.

"Go the pocket rocket!" said Niko.

Baer watched Arrie with a predatory look in his eyes, while sitting so close to Loveday that their arms were touching.

Arrie turned back around after landing her jump and flung her dagger at Lili’s face. It was a ballsy move; once you had thrown your dagger, you were unarmed unless you could manage to recover it.

The dagger hit Lili square in the forehead, blade first, and then bounced away.

"Orrh, ha, ha," Niko guffawed. "A dagger through the forehead. This little girl means business!"

He was pissing himself laughing at the sight of the five-foot-high gymnast fighting like a male assassin.

"Oh," Lili pouted, stalking out of the ring rubbing her forehead where a bruise was starting to form. She was considered to be a ’kill’ now.

"Come on, Arrie! Go girl!" cheered Winter.

Arrie spared her a quick, sparkly smile.

She looked at Wolf and he nodded, passing her his knife.

She did a handstand, and he grabbed her by the ankles, swinging her rapidly in a full circle and moving in closer to Cormac, so that as she flew low past him, she dragged the dagger across both of his ankles.

Cormac flung his dagger down in annoyance after the ’hit’.

Arrie rolled back to her feet and gave Wolf a high five.

Baer didn’t like other people touching his things, and his face hardened imperceptibly.

"Holy shit!" Niko was laughing so hard he had tears in his eyes now. "It’s the dynamic duo. What a way to go out Cormac!"

Alton and Delphi looked at each other, exchanging small smiles. They didn’t really need to see the rest of these matches now.

"That’s what I meant about a ’wildcard’," she whispered.

"Yes, I see what you mean now," Alton raised an eyebrow. "She’ll be an asset. Her size will mean that men totally underestimate her."

As evening drew near, Arrie was rostered on to work in their newly planted rooftop garden.

It was irrigated and they had filled the hives with bees and caught some quails for the aviary. There wasn’t much to do at this stage, just checking for weeds and feeding and watering the birds.

As she stepped out of the bird enclosure, she saw Baer coming out of the door to the rooftop space.

He looked over at her, then turned and deliberately bolted the door to the rooftop shut.

A little shiver of concern ran through Arrie.

This man could be unpredictable, and she had decided she wouldn’t have any more close contact with him.

She nodded at him as he walked across to her, stopping inches from her and looking down into her eyes, reminding her of his height and bulk.

"What are you doing Baer?" she asked. "Why did you lock the door? I’m not interested in doing anything with you," she said firmly. "You’re with Loveday now, and I’m not going to have an affair with you."

He stepped forward, forcing her back, step-by-step, until he had her pinned against the plantroom wall, where he caged her with his arms, and put his knee between her legs.

Her heart started to beat very fast.

"Baer! Listen to me, I’m serious! I don’t want to do anything with you anymore."

She pushed uselessly against his huge chest.

"Who says I’m with Loveday? There’s nothing official going on," he said laconically, gazing down at her with lust-filled eyes, which she had to admit, were turning her on.

"Well it’s inches off official, and I’m not interested in being the ’other woman’," she said unconvincingly, her voice trailing off as she looked into his eyes.

"You’re not the other woman if you become my second wife," he said seductively in that lovely low growl of his, as he searched her eyes for her answer.

She felt a little thrill that he would consider marrying her, but she tried, sensibly, to suppress it. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"We’ll be fighting to end polygamy, Baer. I can’t agree to be a second wife. And nor would Loveday agree to a third party in her marriage with you."

"In the new age of equality that you girls are fighting for, you don’t need to be married to have sex anyway Araminta," he continued with that low, seductive growl.
