Chapter 111: Chapter 111: Resentment

Su Ran looked around, and finally located the source of the moaning; it was coming from a corner of the wall. He quickly went over there, only to find that it was a sewer leading underground. Su Ran descended and helped up the old beggar.

"Old man, are you okay?" Su Ran asked with slight concern.

"Hmph, If it weren’t for you following so closely, I would not have fallen down here!" The old man complained, "Ouch~ my back seems to have been twisted~"

Su Ran was taken aback. This beggar could understand skeletone language! Continuing to hold his tongue, he observed the grotesque, yet fascinating, beggar before pulling out a gold coin.

Suddenly, the old beggar sprang into action like a whirlwind, and within the blink of an eye, the gold coin in Su Ran’s hand vanished.

"What, your back doesn’t hurt anymore?" Su Ran asked, amused at the old man’s antics. "Living in hiding can definitely be deceiving."

"It doesn’t hurt anymore, it doesn’t hurt anymore!" The old beggar chuckled as he held the shiny gold coin as if it was the most precious treasure in the world.

"Old man, I have a question. Do you know where the small beggar lives?" Su Ran took the opportunity to ask.

The old beggar’s expression changed instantly when he heard about the small beggar.

"I don’t know!"

Su Ran took out another gold coin.

"Turn right at the entrance of the sewer, keep going straight, then turn right again, and you will be there."

Su Ran thanked him and walked directly towards the indicated direction.

"Huh? Old man, why do you keep following me?" Su Ran was surprised to find the old beggar following him, so he asked.

"Nonsense, the small beggar you are looking for is my son. I am his father, and I am going home!" The old man said, sounding rather disgruntled.

Su Ran was speechless.

"Dog egg, get up, we have a guest!"

Upon entering the simple hut, Su Ran found a young beggar with a pale face, struggling to get up from his worn-out wooden bed.

"Don’t move. If you’re sick, just lie down." Su Ran quickly approached and nudged the young beggar back onto the bed.

"I apologize for any inconvenience caused due to my disability," said the young beggar, appearing somewhat shy.

"Not at all, my friend. There’s no need to feel inferior. We’re all equals!" Su Ran softly comforted the young beggar.

"Well said!" The old beggar nodded in agreement, clapping his hands in response.

Su Ran turned and threw another gold coin to the old beggar. "It’s chilly outside; go and have fun."

"Thank you, boss!" The old beggar picked up the gold coin and left merrily, leaving only the young beggar behind.

"Now it’s just the two of us, tell me, why do you and your father understand skeletone language?" Su Ran asked, trying to sound casual but failing to mask the seriousness in his voice. He knew that the Human Race and the Undead were enemies. The ability of two humans to speak the language of the Undead was indeed extraordinary.

"If I told you I learned it, would you believe me?" The young beggar gave a bitter smile. "To learn this skeletone language, my father and I put in a lot of effort."

"Why?" Su Ran was puzzled.

"Let me explain." The old beggar returned from outside.

"Leave." Su Ran tossed another gold coin in the direction of the old beggar.

"Thanks, boss!" The old beggar hurriedly left.

"My dear man, what if I want to join the Undead?" The young beggar stared at Su Ran, his eyes filled with an inexplicable gleam.

Su Ran was stunned like he was struck by a bolt from the blue.

Could it be that someone actually wanted to renounce their human status and join the Undead? To what extent would a person be suppressed to even consider saying this? Su Ran’s eyes moistened as he gently touched the young beggar’s frail hair, sighing deeply at the situation.

"Let me explain." The old beggar came in again.

Su Ran didn’t say anything but was immersed in a veil of sorrow.

"Ahem, boss, I said, let me explain." Seeing that Su Ran seemed to have not heard him, the old beggar repeated himself.

"Speak," Su Ran said, struggling to regain his composure.

"So now you don’t want me to leave?" The old beggar was surprised. This wasn’t how things were supposed to play out.

"If you have something to say then say it, if not then leave." Su Ran glared at the old beggar.

"Well, the story begins ten years ago," the old beggar began solemnly, his voice conveying the weight of years. "I found this child. He was born frail and ill and was ruthlessly abandoned in the sewer."

"Stop talking!" The young beggar exploded furiously. "This is why I despise the Human Race!"

"The child is blessed. He survived till now, but..." The old beggar paused, completely ignoring the young beggar’s twisted little face.

"The sudden arrival of the Imperial City’s army took us by surprise."

Su Ran pacified the young beggar, and silently listened to the words of the old beggar.

"These bastards claimed that our place was hindering the development of the Imperial City and sullying the civilization of the Human Race!" The old beggar fell silent.

After a while, the old beggar sighed in despair, and said with emotion, "We held countless memories within these four walls and naturally refused to move out. Unfortunately, these brutes decided to forcefully demolish the place. This little one refused to allow it, but they brutally broke one of his legs. Warrior, I have a humble request. I hope you can help us get justice!"

Forced demolition? At this point, Su Ran began to see similarities with a familiar scene in the real world.

"Stop talking!" The tears ran down the young boy’s face. "I hate the Human Race, I want to become one of the Undead, I want to become a powerful entity of the Demon World, and annihilate these ones who bully the weak... wuu..."

Suddenly, a system prompt rang out.

"Ding! Congratulations to player skeleton for obtaining a quest, you now have two choices: 1. Kill the captain of the Imperial City’s Guard to bring justice. 2. Find the Dark Breath, and grant the small beggar the authorization of the Demon World, to become a member of the Undead."

Dark Breath!

It was at this moment that Su Ran realized what the Dark Breath in his bladder could be used for...

"Believe me, the Human Race is beautiful." Su Ran stroked the young beggar’s head and softly said, "People yearn for peace. We live in the Holy Continent, where countless heroes have shed their blood and sacrificed their lives to give us this prosperous era. We must learn to cherish it. What you have encountered is but a shadow in the darkness. Try to reach out and you will see the beauty of the Human Race; where sunshine spreads across the earth and the warmth of spring welcomes the bloom of flowers. By then, you will realize how fortunate and happy it is to be living."

"But my leg has already been broken..." The young beggar’s eyes were full of tears and bitterness didn’t subside from his eyes.

"Broken legs can be treated, and reasoned vengeance will be claimed!" Su Ran spoke gently: "Do not hastily denounce the entire Human Race. The human race... is the best race!"

The old beggar walked up, clapped his hands, and said, "Well said! This is also why this old man insists on living a life, and not blaming the entire Human Race for the misdeeds of a few bad apples. Kid, cheer up, your future is still long!"

Accept the task—Kill the Imperial City Guard Captain to uphold justice!
