Chapter 151 - Do You Yearn for Freedom?

Roya had been plotting ever since he stepped foot in Wano: he was going to take Yamato! She was the only thing in this isolated country that sparked his interest.

She was strong and beautiful, a rare combination!

Her potential is incredible, maybe even more so than Ace's.

And most importantly, Yamato's heart seemed kind and pure. She might actually listen to reason, and maybe even be receptive to the Marines.

As for what Kaido will do when he gets back... well, Ace caused the trouble on Onigashima! Yamato just got lost in the chaos. What does any of that have to do with me? Besides, why would he be looking for Yamato before he found Ace?

News traveled slowly in the world. If Yamato kept a low profile with him, it would take Kaido years to realize she was gone for good. By then, who knows what the world will look like?

In three years, I might even have the strength to fight Kaido, to protect her.

Later on, if I want to really shake things up in the Marines and change the world, I'll need powerful allies like Yamato and Ace.

Smoker and Hina are good, but in the end, they 're just not enough.

Roya chuckled, lost in his plans.

"Yamato, do you yearn for freedom?" he asked, a sly glint in his eyes.

"Of course!" Yamato's eyes sparkled. She nodded eagerly, like a bird pecking at grain.

Freedom was her greatest dream!

But...

Her face fell, and she bit her lip. "Even if I want to sail away, I can't leave this island." Her voice was barely a whisper.

"How pessimistic," Roya scoffed.

He turned and headed for the stairs. "Come with me. This isn't the place to talk."

"Where are you going?" she asked, her voice full of curiosity.

"Don't ask so many questions. Just follow me."

"..."

Yamato hesitated for a moment, then hurried after him.

Soon, they reached the very top of Skull Dome. The wind whipped around them. Looking out, there was nothing but open sky.

That's the scent of freedom.

"Sit down," Roya said, already settling cross-legged. He pulled out a couple of drinks. "Yamato, you said you can't leave this island. Why?"

"Well..." Yamato looked down, biting her lip again.

"The one who keeps me here, who won't let me set sail, is my father, that bastard Kaido!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with venom.

"It's all that guy's fault!" she declared, clenching her fists. "As long as he's my father, I can't be free!"

"Hahahaha!" Roya burst into laughter, the sound echoing in the vast space.

Yamato glared at him, feeling mocked. "Damn it! What's so funny?!"

"This reason is hilarious, of course," Roya said, shaking his head with a grin. He poured Yamato a cup of sake. "Can you even drink this?"

"Don't underestimate me!" she retorted. Yamato grabbed the cup and downed it in one gulp, still looking annoyed, her cheeks puffed out like an angry squirrel.

Roya took a drink himself, chuckling. "So you can drink. After hearing you say 'Father, Father' this and that, I thought you were a little kid."

"I'm not a little kid!" Veins popped on Yamato's forehead.

"Hey, Yamato." Roya's smile faded, and his expression turned serious. "Since you're not a little kid, it means you have your own strength. Why are you blaming your inability to leave this island entirely on your father?"

"How can you understand my feelings!" Yamato cried, raising her hands, showing off the heavy cuffs around her wrists.

"I'm imprisoned on this island, and I'm forced to wear these cuffs that will explode if I leave. All I have left in this life is the choice to stay here, and it's all because I'm Kaido's daughter!" Her voice broke with emotion.

"That's your excuse?" Roya asked, sighing in exasperation.

This girl isn't being held back by the cuffs. She's suffering from Stockholm syndrome, completely terrified of Kaido.

"Excuse?" Yamato looked stunned.

"Yes, all of that is just an excuse," Roya said firmly. He leaned forward, his gaze intense. "Yamato, do you really yearn for freedom?"

"Of course! As long as I can be free, I'm willing to pay any price!" Yamato answered without a moment's hesitation.

This was the one thing she knew for sure.

"Alright. I'll help you," Roya said, standing up. "Hold out your hands."

"What for?" Yamato didn't understand, but she obediently held out her hands.

The next second, a flash of sword light streaked before her eyes!

"Clang!" The sharp blade slammed into the stone floor.

With a crack, a massive stone, the size of a millstone, split in two!

Yamato snatched back her hands, her hair standing on end. If she'd been even a fraction of a second slower, her hands would have been sliced off!

"You bastard! Are you trying to kill--"

"Why did you dodge?" Roya interrupted, his voice sharp.

"Huh?" Wasn't dodging the obvious thing to do?

"You just said that these cuffs are binding you to this island. In that case, if you cut off your hands, you'd be free from the cuffs, and you'd be free," Roya explained, his eyes burning into hers. "So, why did you dodge?"

"Is that how far you're willing to go to be free?"

Yamato stood frozen, speechless.

Cut off my hands... to be free.

For twenty years, she'd been dreaming of escaping Onigashima, escaping her father's shadow, but when the moment came, she'd flinched.

Why...? Yamato questioned herself.

If she could be free by sacrificing her hands, she shouldn't hesitate. But why was her heart resisting?

Roya sheathed his sword, a knowing grin on his face. "What's binding you isn't the cuffs, it's the fear of your father in your heart, isn't it, Yamato?"

"Fear in my heart..." Yamato touched her chest, remembering the years of torment, the dark prison cell where her father had locked her away as a child, the lingering terror that haunted her dreams.

So, I'm afraid of my father.

She finally understood. Even without the cuffs, she couldn't leave this island.

Damn it!

Why did I only realize this now! I want to live freely!

"Roya!!!" Yamato squeezed her eyes shut, trembling, and held out her hands, shouting even though she was terrified. "Cut off my hands! I want to be truly free!"

"As you wish!" The sound of a sword being drawn echoed in her ears.

Yamato squeezed her eyes tighter, her eyelids fluttering, tears streaming down her face. Her body shook uncontrollably.

So scared, so scared, so scared...

"Pat!"

A hand gently rested on her head.

"Huh?" Yamato blinked open her eyes, staring at Roya, who was patting her head, his face lit with a warm smile.

The fear in her heart... slowly faded away.

Roya's smile widened. "You're very brave, Yamato."

"Brave..." Yamato's eyes welled up with tears.

She'd almost been scared to death! Could that really be considered brave?

Thank you, Roya.

Yamato wiped away her tears, her eyes no longer filled with confusion. "Roya, I'm ready!"

"Yeah, I see that," Roya said, nodding. He grabbed Yamato's cuffs, the veins on the back of his hand standing out.

"This kind of thing!" He gritted his teeth, struggling. So hard! Harder than ordinary steel!

"Stop it, Roya!" Yamato cried, grabbing his arm. "If the bomb explodes, you'll get hurt!"

"Be quiet!" Roya's face was contorted with effort, veins bulging on his arms. Powerful Haki flowed into the cuffs.

"Crack... crack..." Faint cracks appeared on the surface of the carefully crafted restraints!

"Crack!" The steel shattered!

"Boom!!!" Flames erupted into the sky.

The violent explosion threw them both backwards!

Yamato scrambled out of the dust, shaking her head. When she saw the flames burning dozens of feet away, rage bubbled up inside her.

"Damn Pops! It really was a bomb!"

She'd clung to a tiny sliver of hope that the bomb in the cuffs was a lie. After all, no matter how ruthless a father was, he wouldn't really kill his own daughter.

"Damn it!" Yamato punched the ground, tears streaming down her face.

Then Roya knelt in front of her, stroking her head again. "Congratulations. You're free."

"..." Yamato stared blankly at Roya.

She... was free!
