On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 93: Why Is He Here?
The baby immediately rushed over, a pitiful look on his little face as he stared at Chloe Sterling’s injury.
"This is more than just a scratch! How did it get this bad?" Jean Kensington said, turning to Chase Langdon and the two bodyguards.
But the three of them all turned to look at Chloe Sterling.
Chloe Sterling pulled her hand back. "The Black Fruit Vine has thorns. I wasn’t paying attention and it scratched me. I’ll just put some medicine on it when we get back. Let’s go."
"Really?" Jean Kensington asked.
Chloe Sterling arched an eyebrow. "What else could it be?"
Jean Kensington pressed her lips together. "I’ll treat it for you when we get back."
"Fine. Let’s get going."
The group started walking back.
After arriving at the courtyard, Jean Kensington immediately got the first-aid kit to disinfect Chloe Sterling’s hand and apply the ointment.
The baby stood to the side, blowing gently on the wound. Every so often, he would lift his big, round eyes to Chloe Sterling’s face, as if asking if it hurt.
Chloe Sterling understood him and chuckled softly. "It doesn’t hurt at all."
"With so many scratches, are you sure this thing isn’t poisonous?" Jean Kensington suddenly asked.
"It’s not," Chloe Sterling replied.
After the ointment was applied, she immediately began processing the two Black Fruits. They had to be at their freshest for the best effect.
Not daring to disturb Chloe Sterling, the others waited. She worked alone in her room for several hours before emerging with a small bowl of black liquid medicine.
Jean Kensington and the others were sitting in the courtyard. When she finally came out, they looked at the bowl in her hands. "Is it ready?" Jean asked.
"Yes." Chloe Sterling carried the small bowl over to the baby and squatted down. She filled a spoon with the liquid and brought it to his lips. "Baby, drink your medicine. It’s not bitter, it’s sweet."
Without the slightest hesitation at the sight of the dark liquid, the baby opened his little mouth and drank it all in one go.
"Good boy. One more."
The baby took another sip, then suddenly reached out with both little hands to hold the bowl, looking up at Chloe Sterling.
"You want to drink it yourself?"
The baby nodded.
Jean Kensington said, "Let him drink it himself."
"Okay." Chloe Sterling let go of the bowl. "Slowly, now."
The baby ignored the spoon, raised the bowl, and GULP, GULP, drank all the medicine.
Jean Kensington watched her son, her face full of anticipation. "Sweetheart, how do you feel?"
The baby opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
Chloe Sterling said, "It won’t work that quickly. He needs to finish the entire course of treatment, at the very least."
"Oh." Jean Kensington gave a strained laugh. "I guess I’m being too impatient. Sweetheart, we’ll just have to wait a little longer."
Chloe Sterling squeezed her hand. "It won’t be too long. We’ll check again in a week." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
At the thought of her baby finally being able to speak, a flood of emotions washed over Jean Kensington. Her eyes grew red as she nodded. "Okay."
That night, after everyone had gone to sleep.
Chloe Sterling was curled up in bed, clutching her stomach in agony. Her face was pale, and she was drenched in sweat. Although she had taken an antidote and wasn’t in mortal danger, the Black Fruit Vine’s poison was potent, leaving her with unbearable abdominal pain.
The pain would subside after a few hours, but she was destined for a sleepless night.
「The next morning.」
Chloe Sterling emerged from her room.
Chase Langdon was just returning from his morning workout. Seeing how pale she was, he immediately asked, "What’s wrong? You look terrible."
"I didn’t sleep well last night."
"You didn’t sleep well?" Chase Langdon looked skeptical. "Is that all, or does this have something to do with the vine’s poison? Chloe, tell me the truth."
"You’re overthinking it. I just didn’t sleep well."
Chase Langdon was about to say more, but Chloe Sterling cut him off. "Is there anything to eat? I’m hungry."
Chase Langdon lifted his hands, which were holding several bags. "I went to town and bought breakfast. Steamed buns, fried dough sticks, mini wontons, and tofu pudding."
A smile touched Chloe Sterling’s lips. "It’s a good thing you came back with us. It’s always nice having you around, Chase."
Chase Langdon snorted. "You don’t have to flatter me. It would be better if you just took care of yourself from now on."
After breakfast, the group went back up the mountain to search for herbs, not returning until noon.
The baby was tired, so Jean Kensington took him inside to rest.
Chloe Sterling and Chase Langdon stayed in the courtyard to sort the herbs.
Suddenly, a middle-aged woman’s voice came from the gate.
"Chase Langdon! Chloe! It really is you! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me." The woman had a booming voice and barged right in, circling the pair. "Well, look at you two! A trip to Crestfall has certainly changed you. Chloe, you’re prettier than ever, and Chase, you’re more handsome. You two must have struck it rich in the city, huh?"
The two of them were cold toward the woman.
Chase Langdon said coolly, "It’s been so-so."
"What do you mean, ’so-so’? Those two cars at the gate are yours, aren’t they? They look expensive. Must have cost a couple hundred thousand, right? Chase, Chloe, now that you’ve made it big, you can’t forget us folks back home. Especially you, Chloe. I helped you and your widowed mother out plenty back in the day. You should be more grateful."
Chloe Sterling sneered. "It’s been years, and your skin has only gotten thicker."
Hearing this, the woman’s expression soured. "How dare you speak to me like that, you wretched girl! So ungrateful!"
Chase Langdon shot back, "You’re the shameless one. Why don’t you talk about all the chores Auntie Rhodes did for you? You’d give her some useless junk you were throwing out and then make her do all sorts of work for you. And you have the gall to bring it up!"
"Who asked her to do anything? She did it because she wanted to!"
"Get out! You’re not welcome here!"
The bodyguards heard the commotion and came out immediately. They looked to Chloe Sterling and asked respectfully, "Are you all right, miss? Is there anything you need us to do?"
The woman was instantly intimidated by the sight of so many people.
"Fine, I’m leaving! What’s so great about you, anyway? My daughter’s in Crestfall too, and I bet she’ll do even better than you! Hmph."
The woman turned and scurried away.
Just as she got to the gate, a black SUV screeched to a halt a short distance in front of her, making her jump. She immediately roared, "Hey, what’s your problem? Watch where you’re driving!"
Immediately after, Damian Rivers and two menacing bodyguards stepped out of the vehicle.
They looked like people you didn’t want to cross.
The woman’s eyes darted between the three men and their vehicle. This car looked even more expensive, probably costing several hundred thousand.
’Looks like Chloe Sterling and Chase Langdon really did make it in Crestfall,’ she thought. ’They have cars, maybe even a house, and rich friends, too.’
She suddenly regretted not being on better terms with them before.
Damian Rivers looked at the village woman. "My apologies, we were driving a bit fast." He glanced at one of his bodyguards.
The bodyguard immediately retrieved two thick wads of cash from the car and offered them to the woman.
The woman’s eyes lit up. ’He’s so generous!’ she thought. ’I’ve hit the jackpot!’ She immediately reached for the money, but before her hand could touch it, another larger hand snatched it away.
"Chase Langdon! What are you doing?! Give me the money!"
Chase Langdon shot the woman a glare before turning to Damian Rivers. "Are you out of your mind? You didn’t even hit her. Why are you giving her money?"
The woman immediately retorted, "He scared me! This is for my emotional distress!"
Chase Langdon fixed the woman with a sharp glare and said coldly, "Get out of here now!"
"You... you!" The woman was livid. "You bastard! Give me back my money!"
"Your money? As if you deserve it!" With that, Chase Langdon shoved the cash back into the bodyguard’s hands. "Put it away. Don’t give it to her!"
The bodyguard looked to Damian Rivers, awaiting his command. Damian said, "Put it away."
The woman: "..."
