On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 71: A Little Displeased
Seeing Jasper Lockwood’s resolute expression, President Carter knew it was a done deal.
He had made a grave mistake.
Jasper Lockwood set his glass down hard. "The rest of you can carry on. Put tonight’s tab on the company’s account." After a pause, he turned to Chloe Sterling. "Let’s go."
"Okay," Chloe Sterling replied with a nod.
The two of them stood up and headed out.
President Carter watched their backs, his gaze landing on Chloe Sterling. A new idea suddenly occurred to him. ’Perhaps she’s the only one who can save me.’
In the hallway, Jasper Lockwood glanced at the woman beside him. Chloe Sterling looked completely unbothered, as if what just happened didn’t concern her in the slightest.
’He’d rejected the woman they’d sent to his room, but wasn’t she being a little *too* calm about it?’
A familiar tightness constricted Jasper Lockwood’s chest. He looked away and kept walking.
Chloe Sterling appeared serene, but inwardly, she was already torturing President Carter with a thousand cuts. ’He knew Jasper Lockwood was married, yet he still dared to send him another woman—and even told *me* to make way!’
If she weren’t by Jasper Lockwood’s side as his assistant, she never would have witnessed such a spectacle. She glanced at him. ’With his status, does this happen every time he goes on a business trip?’
’Probably,’ she thought. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
’Even if no one arranged it, there would still be no shortage of women throwing themselves at him.’
Chloe Sterling’s lip twitched in annoyance.
But she forced herself to remain composed. Jasper Lockwood had already rejected the offer; if she kept dwelling on it, she would just look unreasonable.
Because of the incident with President Carter, Jasper Lockwood decided to delay their departure by a day to appoint a new person in charge.
「The next day.」
President Carter snuck into the office. While Jasper Lockwood and the others were in a meeting, he found Chloe Sterling and rushed to stop her. "Assistant Sterling, please wait a moment."
"President Carter?" Chloe Sterling stopped. "What are you doing at the office?"
"To be honest, I came here to find you," Manager Carter said, suddenly bowing deeply. "Assistant Sterling, I know President Lockwood values you greatly. I’m begging you, please put in a good word for me. As long as you can convince him to let me stay, I swear I’ll reward you handsomely. From now on, no matter what, I’ll be on your side."
"I can’t help you," Chloe Sterling said coldly. "No one can change a decision President Lockwood has made."
"Others may not be able to, but I know you can. I can tell you’re extremely important to President Lockwood. He didn’t bring his new bride on this business trip, but he brought you. His gaze is always fixed on you. It’s clear that your place in his heart is unrivaled."
Chloe Sterling’s eyes narrowed. "President Carter, what do you mean by that?"
A shrewd glint flashed in President Carter’s eyes. "I imagine you wouldn’t want President Lockwood’s wife to learn that her husband fancies his assistant, would you? Assistant Sterling, if you help me, I promise I’ll repay you generously. And in the future, if you ever need anything, I will do everything in my power to assist you."
Chloe Sterling scoffed. "If you had that kind of pull, you should be using it to save yourself."
With that, she turned and walked away.
President Carter’s face was grim, but he didn’t follow.
After they finished dealing with the branch office’s affairs, Chloe Sterling and Jasper Lockwood returned to Crestfall the following day.
Warren Sterling had people staking out The Medical College. When Chloe Sterling finally appeared that morning, he rushed over immediately.
In the lab, Maya Jacobs and a few others were chatting excitedly. Seeing Chloe suddenly arrive, Maya called out, "Chloe! You’re back!"
"I am." Chloe Sterling walked over to the group. "What’s all the happy chatter about?"
"Lynn Chester!" Maya Jacobs exclaimed. "Haven’t you heard? She’s resurfaced! She appeared in Country E and saved the matriarch of the Lancaster Family."
"Oh, I heard about that," Chloe Sterling replied nonchalantly.
Wyatt Hank added, "I’d actually heard some gossip that Lynn Chester was here in Crestfall, but I guess that rumor was completely wrong."
"Not necessarily," said Maya Jacobs. "Lynn Chester has always been mysterious. Maybe she really was in Crestfall and now she’s gone to Country E. Who knows, maybe she’ll pop up in Country A next."
Wyatt Hank countered, "But if she were in Crestfall, why wouldn’t there be any buzz? She’d presumably be here to treat someone, but there hasn’t been a single report about her in the city for ages."
"Maybe she wasn’t treating someone from a prominent family, so the news didn’t get out," Maya Jacobs suggested. She paused, then turned to Chloe Sterling. "Chloe, have you heard anything about Lynn Chester?"
After a few seconds of hesitation, Chloe Sterling said, "I know about as much as you guys do."
Maya Jacobs rested her chin in her hand and murmured, "I wonder if I’ll ever get to meet the legend herself. I’m so curious about what she looks like. There are so many rumors about her appearance, but no one seems to know for sure."
"I doubt it," said Wyatt Hank. "She’s so mysterious precisely because she doesn’t want anyone to know who she really is. Even if you ran into her on the street, you’d probably have no idea it was her."
Maya Jacobs sighed. "That’s true."
Chloe Sterling stood to the side, calmly tidying up her lab station.
Wyatt Hank stepped out for a moment and came rushing back in.
Seeing his haste, Maya Jacobs asked, "What’s the rush?"
Wyatt Hank looked at Chloe Sterling, his expression worried as he stammered, "Chloe, your..."
"What is it?" Chloe Sterling asked.
"Your... your dad, Mr. Sterling, is downstairs! He’s arguing with security, demanding to see you!"
Chloe Sterling’s expression darkened. She stood up, and Maya Jacobs and the others followed her downstairs.
When she reached the ground floor, Warren Sterling charged at her furiously. "You ungrateful whelp! You finally decided to show your face!" he roared, raising his hand to slap her.
Chloe’s eyes went cold. She shot out a hand, grabbing his wrist. "Warren Sterling," she said icily, "This is not the place for you to throw a tantrum."
Warren Sterling’s eyes bulged with rage. Not wanting others to know that Esther had been taken by thugs, he lowered his voice to a harsh whisper. "Where is Esther? What exactly are you playing at?"
Chloe Sterling’s expression remained impassive. "She’s your daughter," she said lightly. "How would I know where she is?"
"Cut the crap! You hired those thugs to kidnap her! How could you be so vicious? Where is she? Just spit it out, what do you want!"
"Like I said, I don’t know." With that, Chloe Sterling wrenched her arm free.
"You!" Warren Sterling’s face was pale with fury. After a moment, he swallowed his anger and said, "Let’s talk somewhere else. You’re holding her like this because you want to negotiate with me, right? Fine. I’ll negotiate. But you’d better not push your luck."
Looking at the man before her, Chloe Sterling sneered. "You’re giving yourself too much credit. I have nothing to discuss with you. Get out of here, or I’ll have security throw you out."
"Chloe Sterling!"
Warren Sterling bellowed. He refused to believe she didn’t know where Esther was; he just couldn’t figure out what her endgame was.
Just as he was about to press her further, his phone rang. It was Rose Lynch. He answered immediately. "Hello? What’s wrong?"
