On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 56: Accompanying Her
A slight smile touched Chloe Sterling’s lips as she walked over and sat down. "I’ve always thought of President Lockwood as a shrewd and calculating man, not someone who’s impatient."
"Old?" Jasper Lockwood raised an eyebrow slightly, seemingly disliking the word.
"I wasn’t calling you old. I meant your mindset and personality are mature. If you weren’t that way, you probably wouldn’t have reached the position you’re in now."
"So, I’ll take that as my dear wife complimenting me on my intelligence?"
Chloe Sterling froze for a second. An unnatural expression flickered across her face before she answered honestly, "Yes, that’s right."
Jasper Lockwood chuckled softly, then asked, "Is there something you wanted to tell me?"
Chloe Sterling looked at him, pausing for a moment before saying, "I have to go to Country E soon to treat the Lancasters."
Not wanting to worry Jasper Lockwood, she didn’t mention that other forces had discovered her. Her real reason for going to Country E was to interfere with their investigation and make them mistakenly believe she was still there.
"When are you leaving?"
"Within a week."
After a moment’s pause, Jasper Lockwood suddenly asked, "Is it really just to treat the Lancasters?"
"Yes," Chloe Sterling said. "It’s just to treat them. The Lancaster Family has been looking for me for a month now, so I decided to go have a look."
Jasper Lockwood pressed his thin lips together and said nothing.
Seeing his lack of response, Chloe Sterling immediately asked, "Why aren’t you saying anything?"
"Because I don’t want you to go." Jasper Lockwood’s sharp eyes were fixed on her. "I don’t want you to leave me."
"I won’t be gone long. A week at most, and I’ll be back."
After a brief silence, Jasper Lockwood said, "Alright. I’ll go with you."
"No." Worried that it would arouse suspicion, Chloe Sterling refused decisively. She didn’t want to cause any unnecessary trouble for Jasper Lockwood.
"Why not?"
"I’ll only be gone for a week and I’ll be back soon. There’s no need for you to neglect your own business because of this."
"I don’t have anything going on recently. I’m very free."
"..."
"Besides, it just so happens that I should go check on the project in Country E anyway," Jasper Lockwood added.
"What project?"
"The one Silas Coldwell was competing for."
Chloe Sterling pressed her lips together and fell silent, her mind racing with calculations.
Jasper Lockwood watched her without blinking. After a long moment, she still hadn’t spoken. His gaze darkened slightly. "Why have you gone quiet?"
’Does she still not want me to go with her?’
Jasper Lockwood knew Chloe Sterling’s purpose for going to Country E was not as simple as just treating the Lancasters, so his attitude was firm.
"Chloe, whether you like it or not, this isn’t up for discussion. I have to go with you."
Faced with such dominance, Chloe Sterling was momentarily speechless.
"I told you, from now on, I will protect you."
Jasper Lockwood’s sudden words made a flicker of surprise and suspicion cross Chloe Sterling’s eyes. ’Could he know something?’
Before she could voice her question, Jasper Lockwood suddenly stood up and said, "It’s getting late. Get some rest. Good night."
With that, he walked away on his long legs.
Watching the man’s tall back as he left, Chloe Sterling was filled with a mix of emotions.
Outside the door, Jasper Lockwood stopped and took a deep breath, feeling both angry and helpless.
He hadn’t wanted to take such a firm stance with Chloe Sterling, but sometimes he had no other choice. The little woman truly left him feeling helpless.
「The next day.」
The two of them went to The Medical College together.
Jasper Lockwood went to see Director Xavier, while Chloe Sterling went to the lab.
It was Friday, and Chloe Sterling was planning to leave for Country E on Sunday. She told Maya Jacobs and the others in advance that she wouldn’t be in the lab next week.
"Huh? You’re not coming in next week?" Maya Jacobs asked. "Is something going on?"
"Yeah, I have to go back to my hometown for a few days."
In the afternoon, Chloe Sterling went to ask Director Xavier for leave, telling him the same story about going back to her hometown. Director Xavier didn’t ask many questions and readily agreed.
After all, in order to keep Chloe Sterling, he had promised her that she could come and go as she pleased.
Outside the director’s office, a young woman overheard their entire conversation clearly.
She immediately took out her phone and sent a message to Esther Sterling.
[Esther, I was outside Director Xavier’s office and heard Chloe Sterling tell him she’s not coming to The Medical College next week. She said she’s going to her hometown for a few days.]
Just as she sent the message, a cold voice suddenly sounded from behind her. "What are you doing?"
The young woman jumped, turning to face Chloe Sterling. "I... I was just passing by. What’s it to you?"
"Passing by? Weren’t you just eavesdropping outside the door?" Chloe Sterling questioned.
"Who was eavesdropping?" the young woman retorted. "Don’t you dare make such baseless accusations! Besides, what is there for me to eavesdrop on?"
"You know perfectly well whether you were eavesdropping or not. Also... there’s a security camera right above your head."
Hearing this, the young woman’s face turned pale.
"You should stop doing such pointlessly malicious things in the future." Chloe Sterling warned the woman before walking away. She hadn’t discussed anything confidential with Director Xavier, so it didn’t matter if she was overheard.
Esther Sterling had just gotten home when she saw the message from her friend, and her eyes instantly lit up.
Chloe Sterling was going back to her hometown!
This was a golden opportunity.
She immediately sent a message to Miles Holt and Mason Rivers, telling them that Chloe Sterling was going to her hometown next week and sending them the address.
After a moment’s thought, she sent another message to Miles Holt.
[Miles, if you can’t even handle Chloe Sterling in the countryside, I’ll be sorely disappointed in you.]
Miles Holt replied quickly: [No need to provoke me. I know what I’m doing.]
Esther Sterling’s lips curved into a smile, and she then dialed Mason Rivers’s number.
"Mason, did you see the message I sent you?"
"I did. I was just about to reply when you called."
"Mason, if you send people to her hometown, please don’t let them confront Chloe Sterling directly. Just have them see what she’s doing back there. I heard her adoptive mother died a long time ago, and that master of hers is gone too. I don’t know what she’s going back for, and I’m a little worried.
"What if she’s there to find some shady country bumpkins? And if she brings them back to Crestfall... they’ll definitely be after our family or the Rivers Family. Those kinds of country folk are greedy and shameless. We can’t get mixed up with them."
Hearing this, Mason Rivers’s eyes filled with disgust. "She can forget about it! Don’t worry, I will absolutely not let that happen."
"Okay, I’ll leave it to you then."
After hanging up, Esther Sterling was in an excellent mood.
With Miles Holt and Mason Rivers both making a move, that bitch would have no power or connections to help her in the countryside. Esther refused to believe she could escape this time.
Just then, Rose Lynch came in from outside with a grim look on her face, clearly in a bad mood.
Seeing this, Esther Sterling immediately asked, "Mom, what’s wrong? Why the long face?"
Rose Lynch said in a low voice, "What else could it be! It’s Chloe Sterling again. Sooner or later, she’s going to completely ruin my reputation!"
"What did she do now? What happened?"
"How should I know! At the party today, Mrs. Chester said she saw her yesterday, taking a two or three-year-old child into a high-end apartment building."
"What!" Esther Sterling looked shocked. "Why would Chloe Sterling be with a child?"
Rose Lynch pressed her lips together, silent. Thinking of the thinly veiled taunts from Mrs. Chester and the others at the party made her chest tighten with frustration.
She was regretting finding Chloe Sterling more and more.
She had pinned all her hopes on Esther Sterling. If Esther could really marry the Heir of the Rivers, not only would these women shut their mouths, they would have to treat her with fawning respect.
"Esther, you must make me proud."
