Chapter 182: Chapter 182: Not an Ordinary Person

Chloe Sterling sped up to see what was going on. Damian Rivers had been forced to stop near the entrance of the dojo.

But just as she drew near, the three cars suddenly sped away, vanishing quickly into the heavy traffic.

Chloe Sterling got out of her car. As if noticing her, Damian Rivers got out of his as well.

"What was that all about? Did you piss someone off?" Chloe Sterling asked.

Damian Rivers’s expression was complicated. He gave a wry smile. "I suppose so."

Chase Langdon, having noticed the commotion, ran out as well. Overhearing their conversation, he asked, "Who did you get on the wrong side of? They blocked you right in the middle of the street!"

After a moment of silence, Damian Rivers replied, "I don’t know. They took off, so I have no way of confirming who they were."

"You really don’t know?" Chase Langdon sounded skeptical.

Damian Rivers chuckled. "Of course not. Would I lie to you?"

"You’re the illustrious Heir of the Rivers. Most people wouldn’t dare touch you, right?"

"In Crestfall, there are plenty of ’not so normal’ people, both in the light and in the shadows. Who knows what kind of malicious spirits they were."

Chloe Sterling interjected, "You must at least have a few suspects, right?"

"Honestly, no. I’m as confused as you are." After a pause, Damian Rivers glanced around and said, "I can’t stay and talk. I need to go look into this."

With that, he started to get into his car.

"Wait!" Chase Langdon stopped him. "What if you run into them again?"

"Don’t worry, I can handle it."

Chase Langdon snorted. "I know exactly what shape you’re in right now. I should escort you. Wait here, I’ll go get my car."

"Don’t!" Damian Rivers stopped him. "I’ll be fine by myself, really. They probably won’t be back. Besides, if they’re bold enough to come after me, do you really think you’d be able to keep this dojo open if you get on their bad side?"

Chase Langdon’s expression grew suspicious. "You do know who they are, don’t you?"

"I don’t. But they’re definitely not ordinary people, so you two shouldn’t get dragged into this mess." Without another word, and ignoring Chase Langdon’s protests, Damian Rivers opened his car door, got in, and sped away.

Watching the car disappear, Chase Langdon felt a growing sense that something was wrong. "Who on earth would dare make a move against Damian Rivers?" he muttered to himself.

Chloe Sterling glanced at him. "If you’re so worried, go and follow him."

"He’s already gone. How am I supposed to follow him now? He obviously didn’t want me to, and he definitely doesn’t want me to know what’s going on. Ah, forget it. That guy’s sharp; he should be fine. Let’s head inside."

「Meanwhile.」

「The Lockwood Residence. The Study.」

Henry Chamberlain glanced at Jasper Lockwood and began, "Sir, Damian Rivers fled to the Crimson Wing Dojo. The Madam happened to be there, so our men didn’t make a move. She has seen two of them before, so if they had acted, she would have certainly recognized them."

"And where are they now?" Jasper Lockwood asked.

Henry Chamberlain replied, "They’ve left the Crimson Wing Dojo. They’re planning to find another opportunity."

Jasper Lockwood’s face remained impassive as he gave a noncommittal "hmph."

After a moment of thought, Henry Chamberlain added, "Sir, it seems Damian Rivers figured out they were our men, which is why he ran to the Crimson Wing Dojo. He knows we wouldn’t make a move on the dojo. The only question is whether he’s involved in Serena Lockwood and her group’s plan."

Jasper Lockwood’s eyes darkened. "Whether he’s involved or not, he definitely knows about it." He paused, then gave another order, "Post men to watch Grandfather. Don’t let Serena Lockwood get near him anytime soon."

Henry Chamberlain nodded. "Understood. I’ve already dispatched extra manpower to the old family estate and made sure they are all our own people."

Jasper Lockwood said nothing more, his gaze falling back to the document in his hand.

Damian Rivers sped back to the Rivers family home, encountering no further incidents along the way.

"Damian, you’re back. Perfect timing. You’re coming with us," Serena Lockwood said with a smile.

"Where to?" Damian Rivers’s voice was laced with a hint of coldness. He looked at Mr. and Mrs. Rivers and asked, "Dad, Mom, what exactly are you trying to do? Are you really planning to go against the Lockwood Group?"

Serena Lockwood’s expression faltered. "You know?"

"Did you think I wouldn’t notice the moves you’ve been making?"

After a moment of silence, Serena Lockwood said, "Since you already know, don’t ask so many questions. Just come with us. Your father and I have arranged to meet with your Uncle and Aunt Sinclair, and also President Sterling of Apex Group. You’re coming with us to meet them."

The Head of the Rivers Family added, "That’s right, Damian. Come with us. I was planning on telling you about this today anyway."

Damian Rivers frowned slightly. "I don’t want to get involved in this."

At his words, the Head of the Rivers Family’s expression soured. "What is that supposed to mean? Everything we’re doing is for the sake of your future standing in Crestfall!"

Serena Lockwood said, "Damian, I know you don’t like all this conflict, but the Rivers Family will be yours to lead one day. This is something you’ll have to face sooner or later!"

Damian Rivers replied sternly, "I have no problem taking over the business, but I refuse to stab other families in the back. Mom, you were a Lockwood. Why are you doing this?"

At his words, Serena Lockwood’s face fell. "’A Lockwood?’ What kind of Lockwood am I? Who in the Lockwood Family has ever given me a shred of respect? That brat, Jasper Lockwood—you’ve seen how he treats me. Does he think of me as one of the Lockwoods?

The old man claims he treats me like his own daughter, but it’s all just lip service. He never gave me an ounce of real power. Whenever I needed help, the Lockwood Family never lifted a finger. So I ask you, what kind of Lockwood am I?"

Damian Rivers countered, "But the Lockwood Family raised you, didn’t they? They gave you your status and standing."

Serena Lockwood sneered. "That’s right, they raised me. But you have no idea what it was like, living under someone else’s roof, all that I gave for the Lockwood Family. In the end, I was still just an outsider. They never treated me as one of their own. The status and standing I have now, I earned them myself! I didn’t get them by relying on the Lockwoods."

After a pause, Serena Lockwood stared at Damian Rivers, her tone resolute. "I’m going to make the Lockwoods see that I, Serena Lockwood, can get everything I want through my own strength! Besides, fortunes change. Whether the Lockwood Family can keep their spot as the number one family... well, that will depend on their own skill."

Damian Rivers couldn’t help but laugh. "Do you really think the Rivers Family and the Sinclair Family combined are enough to take on the Lockwood Family?"

"Of course not." Serena Lockwood smiled faintly. "Our allies aren’t limited to the Sinclair Family. We also have Apex Group from Country A. And, as they say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. The man in charge of Nocturne Group, Silas Coldwell, has bad blood with Jasper Lockwood. They’ve been clashing for a long time. He’s not going to miss a chance to see Jasper besieged."

"That’s mainly because Nocturne Group is also actively opposing the Lockwood Group, right?" Damian Rivers asked. "Have you been in contact with Silas Coldwell?"

"We haven’t, no. But I’m confident he won’t pass up this chance to topple Jasper Lockwood." Serena Lockwood looked at him, her tone earnest. "Son, you don’t want to live in Jasper Lockwood’s shadow forever, do you? I can see you like Chloe Sterling. If Jasper falls, you can finally have her for yourself. She may not be on the same level as the legendary Lynn Chester, but she is quite capable. She would be very useful to have by your side."
