On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 178: Absolutely Not Here to Check Up
Jasper Lockwood left after having dinner with Chloe Sterling.
Watching his retreating figure, Chloe Sterling’s previously calm emotions stirred again. She suddenly had the urge to follow him and see for herself just how many beautiful women were there!
But Jasper Lockwood had just asked her to go with him, and she had refused. It would be a bit awkward to say she wanted to go now that he was gone.
After a moment of thought, Chloe Sterling took out her phone and called Jean Kensington.
"What’re you up to?"
Over the phone, Jean Kensington’s languid voice sounded. "Nothing much. Just bored at home."
"Where’s Baby?"
"My uncle spirited him away again."
Chloe Sterling chuckled. "Then let’s go out. My treat."
"Oh?" Jean Kensington’s interest was suddenly piqued. Her lazy tone vanished, replaced by a hint of excitement. "Where are we going?"
"I’ll send you the address, then we can head out."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Chloe Sterling called Chase Langdon and invited him along. As it happened, Chase Langdon was free as well.
An hour later, the three of them arrived at the club.
Chloe Sterling had already booked a private room from the car, not far from the one Jasper Lockwood was in.
"What made you suddenly decide to ask us out tonight? This is a rare occasion," Jean Kensington said with a smile.
Usually, they were the ones asking Chloe Sterling to hang out. If they didn’t, she would just spend her days buried in medical books or running experiments, and seemed to love every minute of it.
Chloe Sterling said nonchalantly, "It’s just been a while since we all got together. I was afraid you’d be bored."
"A while?" Jean Kensington raised an eyebrow. "Didn’t we just get together last week?"
Chloe Sterling: "......Isn’t a week a long time?"
Jean Kensington gave a knowing smile and pointed at her. "Chloe, something’s up with you."
Chloe Sterling poured a glass of wine. "Fine, I won’t be so proactive next time."
Jean Kensington’s smile froze. "No, no, you should be proactive! We’re young, we should have a young person’s vitality and get out and have fun more often."
Chase Langdon chimed in, "That’s right, Jean’s right. Chloe, you shouldn’t spend all your days holed up in the lab. You need to get out and be more active."
Chloe Sterling glanced sideways at him but didn’t say anything.
’As if Jean is ever wrong in your eyes,’ she thought.
Chase Langdon turned to Jean Kensington and asked, "By the way, where’s Baby?"
Jean Kensington raised her glass. "My uncle took him again." She took a comfortable sip of her wine and added, "I never realized my uncle liked kids so much. Looks like I need to start thinking about his love life, get him married and have a kid of his own so he’ll stop stealing my son every day."
Chase Langdon asked, puzzled, "Doesn’t he work at The Sinclair Group? He should be really busy, right? How does he have so much time to look after a child?"
"He’s not that busy. He isn’t at the office or the Sinclair Residence all the time. He usually only goes when something comes up, so it’s fine."
"I see."
「Meanwhile.」
「In Dean Lynch’s residence.」
Baby was on a laptop, secretly logging into a certain website. He was so focused that he didn’t notice Dean Lynch suddenly walk up to him.
Looking at the content on the screen, a complicated expression flickered in Dean Lynch’s eyes. He spoke softly, "Baby, what are you looking at?"
Hearing his voice, Baby instinctively snapped the laptop shut. He looked up at him with his big, round eyes and said in a child-like voice, "Grand-uncle, you finished your shower so quickly."
Dean Lynch smiled and crouched down. "Of course men shower quickly. Were you... looking for someone just now?"
Baby pressed his small lips together, hesitated for a moment, then said, "No."
"I saw what you were doing. Good kids don’t lie."
After a moment’s thought, Baby said, "Grand-uncle, can you please not tell my mom? She... doesn’t seem to like my dad, and she doesn’t want to find him."
A flash of heartache crossed Dean Lynch’s eyes. "You were looking for your dad?"
"Mhm," Baby nodded. "I’m not really asking for much... I just want to know who he is, what he looks like, if he looks like me..."
After a long moment of silence, Dean Lynch said softly, "Baby, I’m sorry."
"Hm?" Baby looked confused. "Grand-uncle, why are you saying sorry?"
Dean Lynch patted his little head. "Grand-uncle couldn’t help you find your dad."
"Grand-uncle, you looked for my dad, too?"
"Yes."
"And you couldn’t find him either?"
Dean Lynch suddenly fell silent. It was a long while before he answered, "Yes. Grand-uncle is useless."
’It’s because I’m useless. I know perfectly well who Baby’s father is, but I can’t tell him. I can’t even let them acknowledge each other.’
’Tristan Sinclair had made it clear that he wasn’t interested in any woman. He didn’t want to get married or have children in this lifetime. So even if he found out, he wouldn’t accept Baby.’
’He might even suspect this was all their scheme.’
’As a subordinate, letting my own niece give birth to my boss’s child... what would the boss think?’
’He would, of course, assume they had ulterior motives.’
’When Jean Kensington’s pregnancy was first exposed, I had confronted her and only then learned the reason. When I investigated and found out that the man from that night was my own big boss, the feeling... was hard to put into words.’
’Later, I had tried to persuade Jean Kensington to have an abortion, but she refused, even running off to another country.’
’Now Baby is older and wants to know who his father is, but I can’t say a word. All I can do is occasionally bring him to the Sinclair Residence and let them interact indirectly.’
Baby reached out his small hand and held Dean Lynch’s large one. "It’s not that you’re useless, Grand-uncle," he said softly. "My dad must be a very mysterious person. His information is really hard to find."
Dean Lynch was once again at a loss for words. He was the one who had hidden this matter; of course Baby wouldn’t be able to find anything.
"Also, Grand-uncle, please don’t tell my mom, okay? I don’t want her to know."
"Okay, Grand-uncle won’t say anything." After a pause, Dean Lynch added, "Grand-uncle is going to the Sinclair Residence tomorrow. Why don’t you come with me?"
Baby was surprised. "The Sinclair Residence again!"
"President Sinclair is Grand-uncle’s boss, so of course I have to go there for work often. What’s wrong? Don’t you like going to the Sinclair Residence?"
"It’s not that." After some thought, Baby said, "It’s just... President Sinclair always wants me to call him Grand-uncle, and I don’t think it’s appropriate."
Dean Lynch: "......It really isn’t appropriate."
「Back at the club.」
Chloe Sterling’s phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Jasper Lockwood.
[Chloe, let me know when you’re done. We can go back together.]
Chloe Sterling was bewildered. ’He knows I’m out?’
[How did you know I was out?]
Jasper Lockwood: [I just ran into your friend. She said you guys were hanging out here.]
Chloe Sterling: [Oh, they asked me to come out. I figured I had nothing else to do, so I came.]
Jasper Lockwood: [Okay, have fun.]
A little while later, Jean Kensington came back inside, walking over with a mischievous grin on her face.
"Chloe, so you weren’t just here for the drinks, huh?"
Chloe Sterling looked at her and asked, "You ran into Jasper Lockwood?"
"Yep, I ran into him in the hallway just now. Did he tell you?" As she spoke, Jean Kensington glanced at Chloe’s phone.
"So... what did you tell him?"
Jean Kensington laughed. "What else could I say? I just said you suddenly asked us to come hang out, and we were so surprised to see him here. But don’t worry, I explained that you definitely weren’t here to check up on him, just to have some simple fun."
Chloe Sterling: ".........."
