Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Questioned Again

Esther Sterling finished packing her coffee and walked out. As she passed by them, she shot them a fleeting glance, her eyes filled with deep disdain.

She possessed everything Chloe Sterling could never have in this lifetime—parental love, early fame, and the adoration of fans. All of it belonged to her and her alone, while Chloe could only watch from the sidelines in envy.

The thought put Esther Sterling in an exceptionally good mood.

Even Mason Rivers, who had come chasing after her again, didn’t seem as annoying anymore. She hadn’t even left the coffee shop when he walked in.

"Esther, I finally found you."

"Looking for me? Do you need something, Mr. Mason?"

Esther Sterling smiled, but inwardly she was disgusted. ’My heart and mind are completely filled with Tristan Sinclair; there’s no room for anyone else.’ But she couldn’t just ignore Mason Rivers right now, so she had to play along.

"I want to take you somewhere," Mason Rivers asked. "Do you have time right now?"

"Right now?" Esther Sterling put on a troubled expression. "I’m afraid I can’t. Mom specifically hired a piano maestro to coach me, and I have to get going."

As she said this, she deliberately raised her voice, as if she were afraid Chloe Sterling wouldn’t be able to hear her.

Mason Rivers looked a little disappointed, but he quickly asked, "Then when will you be done?"

"It’ll probably be very late. I’ve made it to the finals, and I want to get a good score, so I need to focus on practicing. I don’t have much time these days."

"Alright, then we’ll talk after your finals," Mason Rivers said with a smile. "Good luck."

"Okay, I will. Don’t forget to come watch my final performance, Mr. Mason."

"Of course I wouldn’t forget something that important."

The two left the coffee shop, talking and laughing.

Jean Kensington picked up on the hidden meaning in Esther Sterling’s words and frowned. "You really should have had her thrown in jail back then!"

Chloe Sterling laughed, unconcerned. It wasn’t that she hadn’t noticed Esther Sterling’s bragging; she had just seen Mr. and Mrs. Sterling’s true colors long ago and no longer cared.

’It’s as if I never knew them.’ Her only family was her adoptive mother and her master.

"How come you’re so free lately? Don’t you have to go to the office?" Chloe Sterling changed the subject.

Jean Kensington took a sip of her coffee. "I don’t have to go in every day. I negotiated that with my boss when I was hired, and he agreed."

"Your boss has good taste."

"But of course," Jean Kensington said without a trace of modesty.

In reality, the conditions she had proposed were quite demanding, but her boss had agreed to every single one without hesitation, just to get her to join the company.

As they were talking, Chloe Sterling’s phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Maya Jacobs. She answered immediately, "Hello, Maya."

"Chloe, are you busy?" Maya asked.

"No, what’s up?"

"Could you do me a favor? My mother’s good friend suddenly fell ill. The situation is rather complicated, and I can’t figure out the cause. Could you come take a look?"

"Of course. Where are you? Send me the address."

"Okay, I’ll send it to your phone right now."

A moment later, Chloe Sterling received a message from Maya Jacobs.

Jean Kensington immediately asked, "What is it? What happened?"

Chloe Sterling replied while looking at the address, "Maya’s mother’s good friend, Mrs. Sheffield, is sick. The situation is a bit complicated, and she wants me to go take a look."

"Maya? The girl from The Medical College?"

"Yes, that’s her." Chloe Sterling stood up and looked from Jean to the baby. "I can’t stay with you two today."

"It’s fine. Business comes first. You should get going."

The baby said, "Be careful on your way, Godmother."

Chloe Sterling’s lips curved into a smile. "Okay, sweetie. Godmother will come play with you next time."

"Okay." The baby nodded obediently.

After leaving the coffee shop, Chloe Sterling drove directly to the address Maya had sent. Half an hour later, she pulled up in front of a villa.

Maya Jacobs was waiting for her at the entrance. Seeing her arrive, she called out, "Chloe."

Chloe Sterling parked her car on the side of the road, got out, and asked directly, "What’s Mrs. Sheffield’s condition?"

"She’s been suddenly falling into comas lately. They’ve run all kinds of tests at the hospital, but they haven’t found anything wrong. It’s really strange. You should go in and see. She just passed out again."

The two hurried into the villa.

The living room was filled with guests who had come to visit, and among them was Ruby Lynch.

The moment she saw Chloe Sterling, Ruby Lynch was stunned, then her brow furrowed. She wasn’t actually familiar with the Sheffield family. She had only come to visit for Esther Sterling’s sake, since Mrs. Sheffield’s husband was the general director of the piano competition. She never expected to run into Chloe Sterling here.

’She learned a bit of traditional medicine in the countryside and now she really thinks she’s hot stuff!’

The people around them also began to express their doubts, whispering amongst themselves.

"Why is it such a young girl?"

"Yes, I was expecting a professor from The Medical College, not some young girl."

"Can someone that young really do anything? She looks like she’s 20 at most."

Maya Jacobs pulled Chloe Sterling through the crowd and up to Director Sheffield. "Uncle Sheffield," she introduced, "this is the very capable friend I told you about, Chloe Sterling. Please let her take a look at Auntie Sheffield."

Looking at Chloe Sterling’s young and beautiful face, Director Sheffield was also skeptical. However, since Maya was a top student at The Medical College, someone she described as "capable" must have some real skill.

"Miss Sterling, hello. I’ll have to trouble you to take a look at my wife."

Director Sheffield was already busy with the upcoming finals, and now with his wife’s sudden condition, he looked utterly exhausted.

Nearby, Maya’s mother added, "I often hear my daughter talk about you. She says you’re very skilled. We’ll be counting on you for Mrs. Sheffield."

"There’s no need to be so formal," Chloe Sterling said. "Where is Mrs. Sheffield? I’ll go see her now."

"She’s in the bedroom. This way, please, Miss Sterling." Director Sheffield said, preparing to lead Chloe over.

"Wait!" Ruby Lynch suddenly interjected, her sharp gaze landing on Chloe Sterling. She demanded, "Do you have any idea who Mrs. Sheffield is? It’s one thing to run around swindling people with your little bag of tricks, but to dare and bring that act here? Who gave you the nerve!"

Hearing this, Director Sheffield froze for a moment, then asked in confusion, "Mrs. Rivers, what do you mean by that? Do you know this Miss Sterling?"

"You could say that," Ruby Lynch replied, not specifying their relationship. "She’s just a country bumpkin who studied a bit of traditional medicine for a few days. She has no real skills. Director Sheffield, you can’t let her near Mrs. Sheffield."

"A country bumpkin?" someone reacted, suddenly realizing. "Don’t tell me she’s the daughter the Sterling family brought back from the countryside and then kicked out?"

"It looks that way. Otherwise, why would Mrs. Rivers know some girl from the countryside?"

Maya Jacobs immediately retorted, "What’s wrong with being from the countryside? Can’t someone from the countryside have real talent? Director Xavier himself said Chloe is gifted and personally invited her to The Medical College."

Ruby Lynch sneered. "Everyone knows she got into The Medical College by seducing Director Xavier’s grandson. I’m starting to think Director Xavier is losing his touch in his old age."

Esther Sterling had told her that Chloe Sterling got into The Medical College by seducing Julian Xavier.

Maya Jacobs’s face flushed with anger. "Chloe saved Young Master Xavier! Mrs. Rivers, you don’t know the first thing about the situation, so please stop spreading baseless rumors!"
