Chapter 790: Just Him (Ch.791)

The series of events that followed after went by in such a rush, Neveah had not fully eased into it as they happened. One moment, Jian had made a declaration that he would subjugate the Fae,

And the next, the decision was being announced to the Infernal dragons along with the information that the three squadrons camping out around Forts Rudder, Kezrar Dun and Inferno were already enroute to Aloria, the Fae Royal Forest where they would lay siege to the forest and set up portal wards.

Upon Jian’s arrival, they would launch a three pronged assault on the forest and completely overtake the royal territory of the Fae. Which was only but the small, key part of the intended subjugation.

The next part was even more straightforward. Every other major and minor Fae forest would be invaded by a squad from the Fortress closest to it and they had just one order, seize control of the forest from the leading clan or party and execute any resistance.

The attack structure was intended to be swift, precise, brutal...and immediate. And by nightfall tomorrow, every Fae settlement was expected to be in full control of the Dragon dynasty, in the wake of probably hundreds of dead Fae.

Neveah knew she was not in any position to sympathize, she had left quite the trail of dead Fae herself. Right from the moment she arrived at the stronghold,

But it was one thing to take care of rebellious Fae, or a war trained unit like the Fae battalion. It was another thing entirely to bring the war into civilian settlement, which is what the Fae forests were.

However, it had indeed come to that. The Fae had pushed too far, too fast and she knew they deserved whatever was headed their way.

What she didn’t really understand was the...urgency. Yes, the threat of the Fae was imminent and had to be handled swiftly before they would have the chance to launch another attack of any of the fortresses.

Yet Jian had only just returned a few hours ago. He was exhausted, still nursing injuries and still determined to go into battle at this very minute.

Neveah had not attempted to deter him, and if that was his wish, she would follow him into battle without question. But she couldn’t help the feeling that Jian was motivated by something more than the recent antics of the Fae...something he hadn’t said yet.

And truly, Neveah wasn’t antsy about the battle. She was wary to find out what had pushed Jian to the state he was at now.

Did he know? That the Fae had been the cause of his mother’s death? She had not done such a good job of keeping it a secret, unintentionally projecting Adrienne’s memory to almost every dragon.

She just didn’t think Jian would receive it too, seeing as they had been in a completely different dimension.

If he had, he had not spoken of it. And she had not asked.

But if he knew...then it would explain his wrath and urgency. And if this was revenge, the Fae would not be coming out the other side of this in one piece.

The devastation Adrienne had hoped to prevent by sharing the memory with her was now having the exact opposite effect.

"It was long coming." Neveah muttered to herself, smoothing her rider’s suit. "It is a lesson that must be taught. If he is ever to find peace..."

She understood what this meant to him. Whatever it meant to him, it meant to her.

"Veah..." Xenon called as he strode into the room. He paused in his step as Neveah turned to him. His eyes scanned her, pitch black riding suit with gold plated armor and wrist guards. Hair pulled back into a neat pony tail and a bow strapped to her hip.

"Woah..." Xenon muttered, blinking in astonishment.

"Jian insisted on the armor..." Neveah said with a shrug. "Doesn’t want me to get shot down from the skies. I tried to tell him I’ve never had any trouble staying seated on dragon back even in turbulence but..."

"But he is right." Xenon completed. "You have faced turbulence...you have not faced war, riding the Dragon King."

"You have heard of going for the enemy’s leader first?" Xenon asked, walking closer to place a hand on Neveah’s shoulder. "We will be going for Keila. And she will be after Jian...which means you will be a constant target, Veah."

"Every adamantium missile will be aimed to shoot him out of the skies. Now, he will do whatever it takes to keep you safe and out of harm’s way...but you must do the same for him, by being ready at all times and keeping up with his pace."

Neveah bit down on her lip. "If I might slow him down..."

"I didn’t say that." Xenon was quick to interject.

"I know..." she sighed. "I’m just saying, he needs to be able to focus solely on himself and leading this battle. This is personal to him...I still think it’s better I go with you this time." she reasoned.

Xenon tilted his head to the side, his hands stroking Neveah’s hair. "This is personal to him...that is why you must be by his side."

"It is his first battle since his return...first in many years too. My kin must see their King and Queen united as one in the most sacred ritual of blood and fire." Xenon explained.

"This is more than just about the battle, or about the Fae. Jian’s supremacy was dealt a heavy blow by the incident of the dimension. He must remind the world...why we call him King."

She nodded slowly. She knew that too, knew that there had been talks of choosing a new King before she stepped in. Dante’s father had made that clear when he harshly reprimanded her.

The dragon kind existed on a strict hierarchical order. The dragon king was believed to be sacred, indomitable, and infallible.

Now, they respected and cherished him. But if he ever came off as weak, Neveah knew...they would not submit to his leadership .

If there ever was a flaw of the dragon dynasty, then this was it. That their leader would forever exist under the burden to be strong...that he would forget what it means to be anything else.

What it means to just be...him.
