Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 683: Able to Fulfill ()
"Did you just say...a dragon of black scales? Like me?" Xenon asked, his tone was barely above a whisper, there was an obvious undertone of doubt and a hint of caution accompanied it.
’How much truth could these dark forces be capable of?’ Xenon did wonder, it was not a thought that Xenon could ignore,
Impulsive as he may have been, Xenon knew the time for caution. He had exercised it to the best of his ability, refusing to acknowledge the voices up until now and this was because he knew, that there was no place in the stronghold more dangerous than this tower he currently occupied.
And it was not the tower itself that was dangerous, but the dark arts it had represented for the longest time and the threat such arts posed not only in combat, but to the mind of its victims also.
Had Xenon not already had a taste of the chilling cold grip of dark magic on his mind? Had he not already made the terrible mistake of letting his guard down once? Did he not live with that all encompassing guilt up until this moment?
’It is known far and wide throughout the stronghold, that you, Firedrake are the only black dragon. This is truth...yet did you believe yourself to be not only the only one of your kind, but the first of your kind also?’ The first spectral voice enquired with an undertone that conveyed its amusement.
’Such conceitedness even in ignorance is the fault of the firedrakes. The limited belief in their own knowledge...a long life span, but how long is it exactly? How many mistakes have been made, even by you, Firedrake? Misplacing your trust? How could your one species be all knowing?’ The second spectral voice muttered in a low taunting tone.
They sounded truly different than they had in the past few days. They sounded wiser and not at all like the same constantly bickering voices. They sounded like they knew everything Xenon had ever been through since he took his first breath, and even the terrible mistake he had made.
For whatever reason, Xenon realized these spectral voices had led him to believe much less of them than they truly were. It was only now Xenon understood exactly why the sun was yet to rise over the dark lands.
There was a force in this tower that was powerful enough that it could barely be sealed and it had attached itself to Xenon. But why? What could Xenon possibly do for them?
’What was this? Some kind of game?’ Xenon wondered, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
’We will tell you of our final tale...’ One of the spectral voices whispered.
’We will even do better, we will show you...’ A second added.
’But it will not be without a cost.’ The third clarified.
Xenon had already expected the bargain even before it came.
"We may not know everything, but at least we know supremacy...to seize it, and keep it. Do not be mistaken to believe I will be entrapped by curiosity of the past. I will not unseal the hallway you want me to and neither will I be letting you free... whatever you are." Xenon clarified in a dark tone.
’Can you truly walk away from our final tale? With no regrets?’ The third spectral voice quizzed.
"I have lived without knowing for long enough, I can carry on as such." Xenon muttered.
’You will live for centuries longer, Firedrake. You will experience great losses and great love, you will face battles and win wars, your honour and name will be remembered long after you are gone...yet if you walk away now, you will never know this truth.’ The second spectral voice asserted directly.
"If I knew of it, would it change the trajectory of my life? Alter my course?" Xenon asked.
’If it changes everything or if it changes nothing, that is for you to decide. But it might provide answers to your questions and perhaps something more.’ The first voice added.
"I was a dragon hatchling found with no known roots. Raised by one of the noblest dragon clans, I have learnt the ways of battle in a time my people needed battle lords most...I became one amongst the finest." Xenon began in a distant tone.
"I fought by my kin as an equal, my feats began as long ago as the uprising, when I was but a young boy. Never was I questioned for my youth, or disregarded for my roots. I chose my path, pledged my loyalty to the throne and was honoured for my services..."
"I built myself a name, a title, my most cherished brotherhood, and placed myself at the highest point of the hierarchy...My Liege’s most trusted. My foster family may not have lived to witness the days of freedom, but their honour, I carry with me on my shoulders." Xenon paused briefly, a pained look in his eyes.
"There is no one who lives and breathes in the stronghold that knows not of the Black Fiend, but hardly anyone remembers me to be a dragon with no roots." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"I have lived a worthy life, the skies know the taste of my scales and blood, I have battled for the good of my people for centuries beyond the service of my own memory. Now, my brothers and my beloved woman are my sole purpose, my faith, my future and my lifetime...yes, I have regrets, wounds that may never heal, and many failings, but I have no questions." Xenon finished blankly.
’Spoken like a true battle lord. Lord Xenon of Onyx Scales...you have not heard what we want in return, yet." The third voice reminded.
"What else but to be freed?" Xenon asked.
’Freedom is a but a fleeting dream. Our wish is to accompany you, Firedrake...’ The first voice declared.
’For as long as you live...’ All three voices echoed these words.
Xenon’s brows furrowed at that, if there was one thing he knew, it was that the stronghold did not need yet another dragon like Verothrax, touched by dark magic, or another existence like Demevirld, a magical weapon gone rogue.
"It is a wish I cannot and will not fulfill." Xenon made clear.
’You may decide if you are able to fulfill this wish or not, when you know... what we are.’ The second spectral voice offered.
