Chapter 663: Not the One (Ch.664)

For a short period of time, Neveah stared in silence at the chest and the lid that was partly opened. Then she pushed through lid open further, there were about a dozen scrolls neatly arranged within the shelf and a few volumes and journals too.

The contents were not as many as Neveah had expected, but then again seeing as they were the thoughts and musings of Asrig and not historical records, there was only so much time a man such as Asrig had been would find freedom to journal.

Neveah would know, she had gotten a taste of just how tasking journaling could be in the past few months.

The scrolls were piled up on the volumes and journals and there were all within a case of their own. Neveah could tell from these little signs that Asrig had been an extremely cautious and suspicious man and men who had such traits would intentionally and unintentionally inflict trauma on those around them.

’Lothaire had been such a man, even to his own son Alessio...look how we both turned out.’ Neveah thought to herself.

The sudden recollection of her past sent a shudder of disgust down Neveah’s spine.

"Are you alright?" Kirgan asked Neveah from where he sat watching her.

Nodding slowly. Neveah picked up a case, examining it briefly before she opened it and pulled out the scroll within.

The scroll was perfectly preserved, so much so that it appeared to have only recently been stored away and not filed off for centuries.

Opening the scroll, it was not a surprise to Neveah that the words within were written in ancient dragon tongue, and it was not even the most simplified version Neveah had practiced in Dune castle but the raw form of dragon tongue, the kind used more in spoken communication than written...the kind Jian had used when calling to Demevirld.

Neveah had figured that out when she could not translate the words engraved on the chest despite having some basic knowledge of dragon tongue.

Though Neveah was far from mastering dragon tongue, she had practiced for long enough and was always able to translate her father’s records, albeit with difficulty.

But this was different, the writings were completely unfamiliar to Neveah. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

’A cautious man through and through...he ensured the only people who could translate his writings would be the very ones who wanted nothing to do with his memory.’ Neveah mused.

Neveah glanced up at Kirgan and she was about requesting for assistance but her words were caught in her throat when the writings on the scroll began to move.

Neveah’s eyes widened slightly as the letters shifted and changed till they rearranged themselves in a manner that Neveah found herself able to comprehend.

Neveah blinked, unsure of what had just happened but even after that, she realized the words were still changed as they had, and she could now read them.

What was more, an unsettled feeling blossomed in Neveah’s heart. It was subtle, but it was there.

’Then, can My Lady assure us that if there are any strange or unusual happenings when you access the records, you will immediately send word to the council?’

The words Decaron had said at the council replayed in Neveah’s mind.

Neveah shook her head slightly, the council would overreact if she made them aware of this and it may not be anything to be concerned about . Neveah’s gaze moved to Kirgan who had a questioning gaze fixed on her. Neveah schooled her features immediately.

"Your attention will be needed elsewhere. You may leave...I should do this alone, I know you do not feel at ease being in close proximity with this also." Neveah said to Kirgan.

Kirgan stared at the chest, a complicated expression on his face.

"The council..." Kirgan began to say but Neveah interrupted him.

"Will have to understand that the King’s guard are duty bound to honor my word...as are they, and there should be no mistake on that." Neveah completed, fixing Kirgan with a pointed look.

Neveah then tilted her head to the side, her eyes going closed till she was certain there would be no reflection of Demevirld in them.

"I said myself that I will not leave Dragon Keep with this, not because I cannot...simply because I do not wish to. I want to be alone, Kirgan." Neveah said to the king’s guard.

Kirgan did not require much persuasion to abandon his watch and leave Neveah to herself. On one hand, with the recent attack on Keep grounds, the citadel was on high alert and the king’s guard had their hands full.

Even Menarx whose return to the keep was originally intended to be just temporary had now taken up significant duty as the few dark sorcerers captured alive were immediately remanded to Menarx’s district for questioning.

Kirgan also would have many duties that required his urgent attention and it did not benefit anyone for him to leave such duties to keep a watch on Neveah.

When Kirgan left and Neveah was finally left to herself, she returned her attention to the scroll, her gaze moving across the lines of written text.

~~~~~Asrig’s POV~~~~~
When did it all begin?
I often found myself pondering this question repeatedly. Yet, was there truly a reason to contemplate it? I was fully aware of the moment it all started... how could I not know? How could I possibly forget?
"It is ironic, is it not?"
The day that brought my family immense joy was the very day I feared the most.
That day that was the happiest one to my family was also the day I dreaded most.
It became the day I grew to despise, even after many centuries had passed.
In this world we inhabit, there were certainly no simple days. The dark empire is ruthless and captivity offers no respite...
However, that particular day stood out as the worst of them all.
It wasn’t merely due to the burden of chains binding my frail wrists, though I wish it had been.
But no, it was because, on that day... at that precise moment,
I came to understand...it was not me. I was not the destined one...
