Chapter 628: Source 2 (Ch.629)

"This is it, the water supplies directly into the shelters so there is no need to use this spigot." Atticus explained to Neveah as he came to a stop a short distance away from where they had been standing.

"Elle, fill up a bucket." Neveah instructed Estelle who had been quietly following behind them.

Estelle complied without hesitation, placing a wooden bucket underneath the spigot, she turned it on and the water flowed swiftly into the bucket.

Neveah glanced down at the running water, her eyes narrowed slightly as the small wooden bucket underneath it was filled up.

As the water level in the bucket grew, Neveah caught sight of it once again. The strange black and thin substance swirling around in the water, looking like thread strands.

However, they quickly disappeared after only a moment, leaving Neveah to wonder if they had ever been there.

The bucket was soon filled up but Neveah just continued staring at it as it overflowed.

"Veah?" Estelle asked uncertainly and even Atticus stared at Neveah in confusion.

"Pour it out and fill it up again." Neveah said.

Estelle did as Neveah said and once again, those strange black material appeared for a brief moment, swirling around in the water, it was barely a split second before they disappeared once again.

Neveah frowned slightly, reaching out to turn off the spigot.

The wooden bucket filled with water now looked perfectly clean and clear, no impurities whatsoever.

’You saw that, did you not? It was also in our water glass earlier.’ Neveah thought to her wolf.

’I see whatever you see, Veah.’ Neveah’s wolf replied.

’We could not have imagined that, could we?’ Neveah asked for clarity.

’Of all the things to imagine?’ Neveah’s wolf replied with a question of her own.

’It is impossible to conjure this up...on two occasions.’ Neveah completed in agreement.

’It does not seem like anyone else can see it...’ Neveah’s wolf pointed out

’Demevirld.’ Neveah thought to her wolf.

’Demevirld indeed.’ Neveah’s wolf agreed.

It was clear to Neveah that she could see what she saw only because of Demevirld’s influence, and even then, whatever was cloaking it was so strong that even she could only see it for a brief moment whereas the dragons and everyone else were completely oblivious.

"Atticus, you will come with Everon and I to perform an autopsy." Neveah said to Atticus.

"Of course, at once." Atticus agreed without hesitation.

"Then please fetch Everon and meet us back outside the wards. I should leave now, many curious eyes keep turning in this direction." Neveah said as she turned and headed back the way they had come.

Neveah stood outside the wards, her hands crossed behind her back as she patiently awaited Everon.

It was not long before Atticus and Everon emerged from the other side of the wards, and Everon strode over to Neveah.

"What is the hurry? Did you find something?" Everon asked Neveah when he got to her.

Neveah’s brows furrowed slightly and she shook her head.

"I am not certain yet but I have some doubts, I will return to make confirmations after the autopsy." Neveah said to Everon.

"Dante has everything in place, we can begin as soon as we return." Estelle chipped in.

"Atticus will be joining us?" Everon asked.

Neveah nodded, adjusting her hood over her head slightly.

"I need more than one report in the soonest possible time, besides, Atticus has more expertise treating mortals than you do...you are a dragon healer." Neveah reminded Everon.

Everon nodded slowly in agreement and they made their way back to Scabbard.

It was not long before they arrived back at the tower.

Neveah pulled off her hood as she stepped into a side hall in Scabbard tower.

Dante already awaited her and the group, and laid on two different tables in the center of the hall were two corpses, completely ashen.

There was a terrible stench of decay, quite excessive for corpses Neveah knew had been well preserved for the purpose of autopsy.

"Accelerated decay..." Everon noted aloud as he walked over to the corpses.

Neveah paused slightly in her step, her gaze settled on one of the corpses, a young girl.

Neveah could tell from how Estelle also froze up by her side that this body was the first deceased recorded.

"A moment...to honour the dead." Everon said.

Neveah slightly lowered her head, her eyes closed in a moment of silence and respect for the deceased.

"Everon, you will see to this." Neveah said, gesturing to the corpse of the young girl.

Neveah walked over and inspected the corpses, taking note of the ashen skin. She carefully pulled open the robes of the young girl, her gaze narrowed slightly.

The skin of the corpses had become dry and wrinkled, it was almost impossible to tell anything from just the surface alone but Neveah took note of the few blackened veins that could still be seen.

"Blackened veins." Neveah added her own observation.

"Begin." Neveah instructed as she stepped back.

Neveah pulled off the gloves she had on and tossed them to the side, crossing her arms, she watched as Everon and Atticus began the autopsy.

It did not take too long, both were skilled physicians and had soon opened up the corpses.

Neveah waited as they both studied the corpses they worked on and reported back their findings.

"The level of decay of the internal organs is alarming..." Atticus said in disbelief.

"Like they have been charred from within, they have taken on a blackish shade. The decay began even before death and is too widespread." Atticus added.

Meanwhile, Everon was quiet for the longest time, carefully observing the corpse, but when he finally spoke, he confirmed what Neveah already knew.

"...This is dark magic...it cannot be the effect of a natural cause. And it seems the origin of it all was something ingested..." Everon observed.

"Veah, could it be you suspect the water?" Estelle asked immediately.

Estelle had been the one present on both occasions Neveah had found the water suspicious.

All eyes turned to settle on Neveah in question.

Neveah nodded, confirming the question in Estelle’s eyes.

"It is merely my own suspicion for now, but I believe there is something wrong with the water supply in Scabbard... something linked to dark sorcery." Neveah announced.
