Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 625: A Street For the Infected ()
"This is the infirmary?" Neveah asked in disbelief.
The supposed infirmary was very far from what Neveah had imagined or predicted and so she could only stare in astonishment.
What Estelle had referred to as the infirmary was in fact much different from that.
Right from the public infirmary itself, all the way down to the city hall on the very end of the street, the entire distance had been converted into a makeshift housing, quarantine and care center for the infected.
This was an entire street, and every building on either side of the street, restaurants, bakeries, clothing shops, regardless of what they previously were, they had been made a part of the effort.
It was an entire row, completely separating the infected from those who lived in the other parts of the city and this street carried on for a great distance, it was like a small community of its own.
The city had been divided completely into two, a part for the untouched and the other for the infected, it was a devastating sight.
Neveah did understand what a quarantine implied but she had not expected it was this extreme, that the need for such absolute and distinct separation had arisen.
It was not that Neveah and the other Great Lords were uninformed of the spread of the contagion, and they had not neglected the news too, offering whatever aid was required on their various ends,
But Neveah realized that they had just not taken it as urgently as they should have...not until they had begun to hear of deaths.
Even Neveah herself had been too invested in the state of Dune City to care about anything else, but seeing what the city of Scabbard had become now, Neveah felt a pang of guilt for not paying as much attention as swiftly as she should have.
Other than sending supplies, Neveah had just believed the Scabbard dragons would have everything under control. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Neveah admitted within herself that Lord Mycroft’s unwelcoming attitude at this time was more than justified, he truly had many concerns, too much to have the free time to be concerned for Neveah.
And he had been left to deal with it all by himself in this past month, because everyone believed and trusted that a Great Lord would always have a way out for his city.
Neveah realized she had never even contemplated the fact that Lord Mycroft could perhaps be completely helpless... Neveah knew when it came to the breaking, she was much the same, even if she tried to make everyone see otherwise.
A plague was a sudden and unexpected evil that not even the dragon lords had encountered often, how could they be accustomed to handling such a situation?
"The infected grow in population each day and they are soon cast out of their abodes, we can only create as much space as possible to keep accommodating them... infected or otherwise, they are our responsibility." Estelle explained to Neveah.
Neveah nodded slowly, as dismaying as this reality was, Neveah was also impressed by the swift and reasonable action the Scabbard dragons had taken to prevent any altercations between the infected and those who were not.
Neveah knew just what could happen if the untouched rose up against the infected in their desperation to protect themselves.
"It could not have been easy watching his city to which he had dedicated centuries of service ravaged by the contagion...Lord Mycroft, I mean..." Neveah murmured as she dismounted her horse.
The entrance to the street was warded off with magic and protected by two dragon lords. A lone dragon lord stood guard outside the wards and another circled the street above.
Everon’s horse soon came to a stop beside them and he dismounted, helping off the young lady who had ridden with him, the same young lady who had just been left behind by her companion.
Neveah passed a questioning look to Everon and he nodded once before he walked on ahead to the wards.
That single nod communicated to Neveah that Everon had confirmed the young woman was also infected or at least exhibited the symptoms.
Neveah could not get out of her head the scene of the young woman’s companion leaving her behind without a second thought or a second glance.
Though Neveah did know it was only out of fear and self preservation, it was still a disturbing picture to witness.
"To have to keep the people safe from their own selves, from their neighbors, friends and families who moved by desperation might seek to harm their infected kin...it is beyond imagining." Neveah murmured.
"I would be lying if I say it has been easy here in Scabbard, Veah. Each day is more difficult than the last, especially for the Scabbard dragons lords who have always protected this city." Estelle said to Neveah as they walked over to the wards.
"Tara...take caution." Neveah reminded Tara who also accompanied them.
Everon had spoken to the dragon lord standing guard and upon their arrival, his gaze lingered on Neveah for a moment before he lowered his head to a small bow.
"The mortal in your company, Asvarian blood considered, the contagion evolves with each day, all non dragon races are to be kept away...will it be okay?" The Scabbard dragon asked uncertainly.
Neveah passed a look to Tara and then shook her head.
"You are right, it is not. Tara, stay here. I cannot risk it." Neveah decided, ignoring Tara’s look of disagreement.
"But..." Tara began to argue.
"Just listen, Tara. Isalder is already in enough pain, I will not put her sister in harm’s way too...wait out here." Neveah said firmly.
Tara was clearly displeased at this turn of events but she did not protest further as she understood where Neveah stood.
"The streets are dangerous with the rioters about and Scabbard is unfamiliar terrain, I will trouble you to look after her for me, My Lord." Neveah said to the Scabbard dragon.
The dragon lord nodded and then stepped to the side to let Neveah, Everon and Estelle through the wards.
Everon led the way in, escorting the young woman with him.
