Chapter 528: Heartless (Ch.529)

Xenon knew what Neveah was about to do even before she did it, he knew her well enough to recognize the look in her eyes.

Even before he could hardly speak, he had studied her body signals for a long time, her facial expressions, every frown... the changes in her eyes that came with each thought.

And so, it did not surprise Xenon when Neveah got up to her feet and walked off in a rush.

Xenon’s predator churned within him, he had made it clear there was just one answer he would accept and he did not resist his predator’s demand to go after Neveah.

"Let her go, Xenon." King Jian called to Xenon when he made to go after her.

Xenon paused in his step, passing a questioning look over to King Jian.

"I know you are not the patient one, but this time... you will have to be."

"She is confused... scared, and she has every right to be. What we are asking for is not an easy decision, she will not appreciate us influencing it... neither should we." King Jian said as he also got up to his feet.

"It would not be influencing if her heart is with us... she wants to be with us, you know that." Xenon pointed out.

"I do know... but she has to know it also." King Jian said, heaving a quiet sigh.

"Your predator will not condone her being out of sight, it will be hard on you to be away from her even for a moment. And you will let her take her time? However long that might be?" Xenon asked again in confusion.

"If it becomes too hard, I will hold my breath... But yes, I wish for her to come to us of her own will, Xenon. And if that means I have to wait, then I shall do so... hard as it may be." King Jian said with a nod.

Xenon thought over it for a moment before he grunted quietly, King Jian was always more insightful and prudent, Xenon knew this much.

"You were going to break the news in my absence?" Xenon asked with a raised brow.

"I know you well enough... how can I expect that you would actually sit put?" King Jian asked with a roll of his eyes.

"I was going to. But then I did not want to." Xenon murmured with a casual shrug.

"Hmmm. Xenon, there is more we must speak of.... Fort Blazed, we have located Fort Blazed... beyond the barrier." King Jian revealed to Xenon in a serious tone.

Xenon’s gaze darkened in silent rage at the revelation. Fort Blazed and all it’s people, dragons and humans alike had disappeared overnight and all attempts to track it down over the past year had lead to dead ends.

"Is it for certain?" Xenon asked.

King Jian’s brows twitched slightly as he thought back to it, to the scent Neveah had picked up and that worrisome barrier.

It was not for certain that Fort Blazed lay beyond that barrier, it was impossible to comprehend that such a massive fortresses could be concealed there and go unnoticed this long.

The dark lands were vast and endless, but Fort Blazed itself was not a negligible Fort, the expanse it would occupy could not be so easily hidden.

But then again, the disappearance of Fort Blazed itself was something that should not have been possible... yet it had happened, and not for the first time.

"There is no other explanation for why such a powerful barrier would be erected in the middle of nowhere out in the dark lands. Whatever happened to Fort Blazed, I am certain the answer lies there...in the dark lands." King Jian said thoughtfully.

"Then the King’s guard and the squadrons must be rallied at once." Xenon replied.

"I have sent word through Cassian. For now, we must prepare Dune City... Whatever onslaught is to come, it will bear the brunt." King Jian said in a grim tone.

"What would you have me do?" Xenon asked dutifully.

"First, clarify the situation at the light hall. Why the barrier has grown increasingly weaker in the past year, there must be a reason."

"If we are to advance beyond the barrier, we must be certain it will not crash completely in our absence and leave Dune city unprotected." King Jian instructed.

_______________

King Jian grunted quietly beneath his breath as he stood, staring up at the city guard base.

It was a short time before dawn now and after hours of laying awake, King Jian could not resist the urge anymore and had found himself seeking Neveah out.

His search led here, the city guard base and King Jian was not certain if his presence would be welcomed or otherwise.

But it had been a few hours already and going this long without setting eyes on Neveah was already tasking enough, any longer and King Jian felt he just might lose it.

"Just a glimpse...as long as I see her, if only from a distance, my predator will be eased for a little while." King Jian reminded himself.

King Jian did not allow himself give it more thought as he stealthily made his way into the base, moving past the patrol and sentinel guards unnoticed.

King Jian followed the trail of Neveah’s scent and it was not so long before he found her.

"She dares sleep so peacefully after leaving us restless." King Jian murmured as he stepped in to find Neveah fast asleep.

Her head was laid on the desk, with a heap of files on either sides of her and a few strands of hair had come undone, scattered over her face.

King Jian slowly and quietly made his way over to desk, making sure to be extremely cautious so he did not wake Neveah.

Just when King Jian got close, Neveah moved, lifting her head slightly and King Jian froze in his step, believing he had been caught.

However, he was relieved when she only turned to face the opposite side and proceeded to sleep just as peacefully as she had been before.

"You sleep even better now than you did in your quarters, is it so great to be away from us? You heartless woman." King Jian murmured, his lips twitching slightly in amusement.
