Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 495: The Worst ()
When did it begin to go wrong? Neveah was not certain.
One moment, Xenon kissed her with a frenetic fervor, his tremors going still in her hold, and his tender ministrations sending Neveah’s world to a screeching halt,
Neveah had known then that she could truly help Xenon, she could keep him rooted as long as she was by his side.
Yet, in the next moment, Neveah’s consciousness was pulled back to the very depths of her mind and for the first time in so long, Neveah’s wolf seized control.
Neveah was tossed back harshly and her wolf took possession of Neveah’s form.
Neveah could not even react fast enough as the very next sound she heard was Xenon’s quiet gasp of pain as her elongated canines tore through the flesh of his neck and sunk in deeply.
Neveah felt a sudden surge within her veins, like every fiber of her body had been set alight and made way for a new bond...a bond Neveah’s wolf had just placed on Xenon without seeking his consent.
’What have you done?’ Neveah thought to her wolf in horror as the moment their canines were retracted, Xenon went limp in Neveah’s arms.
And just like that, Neveah’s wolf returned control to her.
Neveah crumbled to her knees, breaking Xenon’s fall as she stared in horror at the bite mark on Xenon’s neck that still bled profusely, the blood seeping into his clothing and Neveah’s as well.
The bite had left a deep wound and Xenon was quickly losing a lot of blood, what was worse, Neveah knew a mate mark healed over quickly due to the healing toxins shared from Neveah to Xenon,
Even if it had been a human, they would already have begun healing. But the mark on Xenon’s shoulder did not show any signs of healing at all.
"Xenon! Xenon!" Neveah called, shaking Xenon’s shoulders in an attempt to rouse him but it was to no avail.
Neveah’s hand moved up to Xenon’s neck, checking his pulse. His breathing was oddly fast and though unconscious, his expression was still contorted in pain.
Neveah could imagine how the toxins from her bite invaded his blood stream even at this very moment, completely upturning his body constitution.
Xenon was no werewolf, he was different... how could she begin to predict what effect her bite would leave? How could she know what a wolf’s bite would do to a dragon?
’What have you done?! What have you done?!’ Neveah hissed at her wolf through their link.
’What we should have done a long time ago.’ Neveah’s wolf replied with no remorse whatsoever.
"You hurt him! What am I supposed to do now?! He won’t stop bleeding!" Neveah panicked.
’The bond has only begun forming, he will heal after the process. It should not take more than a few days.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.
"You!... " Neveah hissed but had no words to use on her wolf.
Neveah did not even have the time to contemplate any further because in the next moment, a loud shrieking sound echoed from the sky,
The sound was close, so close that Neveah froze up in place, turning around slowly.
Her gaze trailed up the height of the tree that was just a short distance away from them and perched on a branch right there was a large mass of shadows taking the form of a terrifying winged monster.
The shadows swirled and churned and the hollow spaces that served as the eyes of the beast were fixed on Neveah and an unconscious Xenon.
Neveah glanced down at Xenon, then up at the beast. She moved, slowly, letting Xenon down to lay on the floor, her eyes still watching the beast.
Neveah then stood straight, her hands clenched into tight fists as she shielded Xenon from the view of the shadow beast.
A shadow beast was an extremely malicious beast, Neveah had watched Menarx and Cassian battle it only for it to recover its form with just the same ease.
At least then, they had been summoned by a sorcerer, but this time, these shadow beasts of the lands beyond the barrier had come to life from the darkness that tainted the land...they had neither source nor summoner.
Neveah had never battled a shadow beast before, even at this moment, she had no idea how to take one down.
But if there was one thing Neveah did know, it was the fact that the beast would not be getting past her to Xenon.
Neveah sucked in a deep breath and just as she exhaled, the beast lunged with a ferocious shriek.
Neveah was prepared to meet the attack, but the attack did not come.
One moment, the beast had been headed straight for her, and in the next moment, its course had changed.
The beast was tumbling through the air a different direction and in its place was a person Neveah had Neveah had never expected to see.
His gaze was narrowed into a dark, furious look, one of the very few emotions that actually showed on his expression.
And that dark rage was fixed on no one else but Neveah.
And for a moment, Neveah entertained the thought that the shadow beast would have been a much better option than facing a furious Dragon King.
King Jian’s gaze did not stray from Neveah, not even when the shadow beast shrieked in rage and lunged again.
Without sparing the beast a look, King Jian lifted a hand. A torrent of flames roared to life from his hands, engulfing the shadow beast completely.
Neveah watched in horror as the flames completely consumed the shadow beast, its horrifying shrieks fading off into nothingness.
And then, the forest was restored to its eerie quiet... only this time, the tension in the atmosphere was thick enough to be cut through with a blade.
After an entire year, Neveah had never once considered in what circumstances she would encounter the Dragon King again... she had never thought their paths would have to cross again, truly.
But of all the circumstances she had not thought of, Neveah knew without a doubt that this was the worst.
