Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 472: At The Dune City Gates ()
The merchant glanced around to see everyone now waited for him to comply and so he did, offering Neveah his arm.
"Well? Go on ahead and handle it." Neveah nodded to the city guard to carry on with their inspection.
"Pardon me." Neveah excused as she returned her attention to the merchant.
Neveah felt up the length of his arm, applying only measured pressure to confirm the exact point where the source of the pain originated.
She ignored the pained yelps from the merchant and continued observing till she got to the shoulder area where the merchant let out a rather loud cry of pain.
Neveah frowned slightly, feeling around the area to understand the extent of damage as best as she could through the clothing the merchant had on.
"It hurts! It hurts! Gently!...can you be a little more gentle, My Lady?" The merchant cried out, looking pleadingly to Neveah who fixed him with a blank look.
"Lieutenant, Sir." Neveah corrected calmly.
"Yes of course, Lieutenant... please be gentle..." The merchant yelped out.
Neveah raised a single brow, her gaze blank and expression completely unchanged and unaffected by his desperate pleas.
She held onto his arm, inspecting the area around his shoulder where she was certain the skin would show visible discoloration and the bone would look visibly twisted.
"There is nothing gentle about resetting a broken bone, sir." Neveah said, her words polite but firm.
"Reset?! Here?!" The merchant exclaimed at Neveah’s words, glancing around as though they were in the midst of a battlefield.
"Where else?" Neveah asked back.
"If you would just let us through, I will head straight to a physician..." The merchant reasoned.
"There are just three infirmaries in this part of the city, and of the three physicians in charge, two call me mentor..." Neveah said, fixing the merchant with a pointed look.
"The third...he will come around." Neveah continued, and just at that moment, she snapped the arm back into place while the merchant was still distracted by her words.
The merchant howled loudly and Neveah resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
"I will write a note to the physician, he will follow up with the bandages and appropriate ointment. No worries, your arm will recover in a few weeks." Neveah assured.
The merchant nodded slowly at Neveah’s instructions, supporting his arm with the other.
"Then...we are free to go?" The merchant asked Neveah with a chuckle.
Neveah had long observed how he kept stealing glances to the city guards inspecting the carts and he had noticed that they were just about rounding up with their inspection.
Neveah ignored the merchant’s question, waiting to hear from the city guard.
The city guard had already moved the merchant’s caravan to the side so it did not hold up the line.
One half of the guards at the gate inspected the caravan and the other half continued granting entry to the rest of the travelers seeking passage.
"Lieutenant, we really are in a rush..." The merchant tried again.
His method of causing a ruckus had already fallen through and he could only wait patiently or otherwise for Neveah’s consent to pass.
Not long after, the city guard in charge jogged over to Neveah, whispering some words to her privately.
"Everything seems normal...too normal for a merchant caravan of this size. Plus the carts leave too deep an imprint for the kind of goods it carries... the weights do not match." The city guard reported his findings.
"Yet, we could not identify exactly what is out of place. On your orders, lieutenant, we will apprehend the entire caravan and investigate carefully. A report will be presented by sun down." The city guard added.
Neveah furrowed her brows slightly, she could still feel dozens of eyes on them. Though the initial ruckus had calmed, a lot of random passersby still lingered about curiously.
Apprehending the merchant without any evidence for conviction would raise concerns and Neveah could tell the merchant also knew this.
Though Neveah did not care all that much for the opinion of others but she knew public sentiment could not be overlooked in such matters.
The merchant watched the exchange between Neveah and the city guard and Neveah in turn studied his body language, the nervous look in his eyes and how his gaze was zoned in on the city guard, in an attempt to catch the words he whispered to Neveah.
Neveah passed a look to the carts before her gaze moved back to the lieutenant who had a smile playing on his lips now.
Perhaps he had mistaken Neveah’s look as a gesture seeking some form of compensation.
Neveah returned his smile with a cold smirk of her own, making no attempt to argue with his thought process.
"I am very grateful for your help, lieutenant. My caravan will be in the city for a short time and in this time, we will be operating from the Waterfall Inn."
"We have come with many precious goods, if you are ever in the vicinity, do not hesitate to drop by. I will be sure to treat you generously." The merchant was quick to make a subtle offer.
"Hmmm... I wonder, what exactly you could have to offer me..." Neveah murmured quietly.
"Lieutenant can be rest assured, you would surely be impressed." The merchant assured, chuckling giddily.
Neveah raised a brow, finding it amusing that the merchant had suddenly forgotten the pain from his broken arm now that things seemingly went his way.
"I see... well, I will let you go...in just a moment." Neveah assured as she strode over to the carts, the city guard in charge right behind her.
"We already had all the carts opened and inspected the chests as well." The city guard in charge whispered to Neveah.
"Of course you did." Neveah murmured, glancing over the first cart for a moment before she kicked it over, stirring outrage from everyone gathered, especially the merchant who cried out in horror.
