Chapter 467: Missing Something (Ch.468)

Neveah gave it another thought, if all she had to do was ask for something and whatever she asked would be granted, it was not such a bad bargain.

It was only that there was just a different way Neveah saw things. There was truly nothing she wanted from the Dragon King or anyone, for that matter.

Since she got to leave as she wanted, that much was good enough.

"Fort Blazed... I am well aware Your Grace is sparing no efforts in these months to prepare for recovering the fortress and I also know you have only let things lie calm this long because you have a plan." Neveah began.

Neveah had not planned on stepping into the situation, but Estelle was yet to express her thoughts and now that Neveah was leaving, she doubted Estelle ever would.

"Would Your Grace allow Estelle a sit at the table? I understand it is not something I am meant to request for another but though she hides it well, I see how anxious and terrified she is and even more so with each passing day."

"Everyone else may still be able to keep a clear head knowing a plan is in the works, but this is her own family... "

"And yes, this sounds like all the more reason for her to be exempted but would it be so bad if at least one person at the table is actually emotionally invested?" Neveah asked.

Neveah realized her choice of words were once again wrong when King Jian’s expression changed.

"I do not mean to imply that Your Grace and the dragon lords do not..." Neveah began to explain but King Jian cut her off.

"You already did." King Jian said directly, it was not an accusation but a simple statement and Neveah could not deny it. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

The words had been said before it occurred to her that she just made it sound like the dragon lords did not care enough for Fort Blazed.

But how could Neveah not know just how powerful the bond shared amongst dragon kind was? How could she not know just how much they valued their kin?

How could she not know the depth of King Jian’s love for his people? She had seen it manifested on multiple occasions before her eyes and it was obvious to Neveah that there was no one more tortured about the predicament of Fort Blazed than the Dragon King himself.

"I am sorry. I know...all you do for your people, the lengths you are willing to go for them and I know even at this moment...you count every passing day till Fort Blazed can be recovered..." Neveah trailed off, knowing it was in her best interest not to say further.

"I just... Estelle is drowning and she needs something... anything, to keep her rooted. Dante will not do... she should be allowed to do all of she can for her people, as you do." Neveah said instead.

King Jian stared quietly at Neveah for a moment, his eyes slightly narrowed.

Not in anger, but in something akin to curiosity or just a puzzled look.

His eyes were searching, like Neveah was a mystery that he was unable to decipher.

"You have a single wish, you could ask for anything in the world and you choose to give it to another?" King Jian asked.

"I... right... you must find me silly." Neveah said with a quiet chuckle.

"You care for the Starron girl..." King Jian continued.

Neveah did not react to his words, neither admitting or denying. The answer was already obvious.

"You also cared for Rodrick’s daughter... and Menarx, Xenon... and each time, you were the one who was most hurt." King Jian continued.

Neveah again was left unable to deny. Her ties to Davina had ended up in Neveah nearly falling to Adrienne’s scheme and her ties to Menarx had put her in the situation she was currently in... both scenarios, Neveah could not deny had left her hurt and drained.

As for the third, Neveah had not realized that King Jian was aware of what had happened between her and Xenon before Xenon remanded himself to Mount Edar.

But from King Jian’s words, it was obvious he had at least an idea.

"Do you still find it worth it?" King Jian asked.

Neveah was not certain if King Jian meant her caring for people who ended up hurting her or using her one wish for someone else, but whatever it was, the answer was the same.

At the same time, Neveah was not certain as to why she was unopposed to entertaining King Jian’s prying, but she provided him an honest response.

"Yes... there have been bad times, but there were also many events when I was grateful for each of them. I have learned not to be so calculative about it ... whatever sacrifices I am willing to make, I will make them."

"It is also for myself, so I do not end up with regrets." Neveah replied with a casual shrug.

"And what about you?... Who makes the sacrifices for you?" King Jian asked Neveah.

"I can take care of myself. I do not need anyone’s sacrifice...it would just be another kind of burden." Neveah said.

King Jian shook his head slightly, as though Neveah had said the most foolish words he had ever heard.

"One who gives without reserve but truly wants nothing in return... you are right, I do find you silly Neveah." King Jian asserted.

"If that is your wish, I will grant it. Fort Blazed... I will be sure to restore it to it’s place, with not a single life jeopardized."

"The Starron girl... I will look after her, in your absence." King Jian assured.

King Jian moved forwards, stopping right beside Neveah.

"Neveah Vairheac...there is something about you... I do not yet understand it..." King Jian murmured in a low tone.

"But when next I see you, I will make certain to understand it..." King Jian vowed.

With that, the Dragon King strode away, heading back into the Keep without glancing back even once.

Neveah watched him till he disappeared down the hall, her brows furrowed slightly.

"Why do I feel like I am missing something?" Neveah murmured to herself.
