Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 459: What Happened ()
Kaideon’s hug was warm and comforting, though it did not completely banish that hollow feeling from Neveah’s heart, it eased her worries and provided more than sufficient reassurance.
That was until a thought crossed Neveah’s mind which she had long avoided entertaining.
’If I am in this state... Menarx... would he fare well?’ Neveah thought, recalling that final glimpse of Menarx she had caught before losing consciousness, his enraged roar... and the hurt in his eyes.
Neveah had done what she had to, she had done what was obviously best for the both of them. It was a decision someone had to make and clearly, it was one Menarx absolutely could not make.
She had chosen to let go of his hand first, but in truth... his hold had loosened a long while ago and she had felt every second of it.
Kaideon finally pulled away after a moment, his eyes shinning with elation at Neveah’s decision.
"I would have us leave immediately, but the dunes is a great distance even by flight and you are in no condition to travel..." Kaideon began to say but trailed off when he took notice of Neveah’s conflicted expression.
"You wish to ask about him?" Kaideon guessed Neveah’s thoughts and the only reason she would display such hesitation to speak in his presence.
It was only because the person she wished to inquire about was the last name she knew Kaideon wanted to hear at this moment.
"I... after I severed the bond...he..." Neveah left her words hanging, uncertain of how to phrase her intended words.
Was she going to ask if he was okay? Neveah did not want Menarx hurt, this was true but after all they had shared, did she even want to hear that he was unaffected by losing her?
"Why does it matter what happened to him? He is a dragon, he won’t die so easily, you are the one who has been hurt the most. You are the one in the most danger, and you still have the heart to care about him?" Kaideon asked in a pained tone.
"He... none of this is his fault." Neveah murmured quietly as she lowered her head, she had no words she could say that would pacify Kaideon.
In the eyes of her father, Menarx was the villain and Neveah understood it was natural given her father loved her most.
But if no one else understood that Menarx was the most affected by all of this, how could Neveah not know? Torn between his love for her and the yearning of the bond, she had seen his conflict and helplessness.
Was all she had done not to ease his pain even it meant hurting them both?
Kaideon sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair.
"I understand... I dearly wish I did not, but I do understand." Kaideon admitted reluctantly.
"After you lost consciousness, Menarx completely lost it, in all the centuries I have known him, I have never witnessed Menarx lose his composure to such a degree, the broken bond and your condition must have been a lot to take..." Kaideon relayed to Neveah in a quiet tone.
Neveah winced visibly, she could not even bear to picture it.
"Menarx flew into a rage and wanted to take you away, that hateful dragon never ceases to push his luck." Kaideon continued, his tone now dark and grudging.
"By His Grace’s orders, he was restrained and taken away. Probably chained down somewhere to reflect on his stupidity and the knowledge that he will regret hurting my daughter for the rest of his existence, as he should." Kaideon relayed.
"Father..." Neveah chided with a heavy sigh.
"Furthermore, I requested an order be passed so as not to let him anywhere near you till you are willing to see him yourself or I would take you away to the White Dunes at that moment..."
"After all that has happened and in the bid for me to be reassured enough to let you recuperate in the Keep, His Grace had no choice but to concede to me." Kaideon continued.
Neveah sighed again, she could not fault her father for his decision, the hurts were too deep, it was best Menarx and herself kept their distance.
Kaideon had handled everything rightly, managing the situation as best as he could, given the circumstances.
"As of now, I do not know of Menarx’s whereabouts or condition, or what was decided by the council...as long as it does not involve you, I will not further concern myself with the affairs of the keep." Kaideon finished.
"Forgive me, for causing you so much trouble." Neveah apologized guiltily, knowing the situation had taken a lot from Kaideon’s end
Kaideon was fiercely loyal to his King, he would give his life for King Jian without hesitation and he greatly respected the King’s guard...to oppose them as he had, it could only be for her sake.
"I am your father, your affairs are mine. There is nothing about you that I would ever find troublesome and you, my child have done absolutely no wrong... to love and to let go is a kind of strength not many have." Kaideon said firmly.
Neveah nodded, forcing a small smile to her lips.
"Dune Lord." Rodvan’s familiar voice called from the door.
"My Lady." Rodvan greeted Neveah with a bow as he walked into the room.
"I am not a Lady anymore..." Neveah murmured with a shake of her head.
"You are heiress of the white dunes, amongst the strongest of the twelve great fortresses...if you are not a Lady, no one else is." Rodvan deadpanned.
Neveah blinked at Rodvan’s response.
"Your Uncle Rodvan never minces his words, you will get used to him." Kaideon assured with a chuckle.
"What brings you?" Kaideon asked Rodvan.
"Our Liege summons you." Rodvan relayed his report.
Kaideon passed Neveah a look and Neveah nodded to him.
"I will be fine. I will sleep for a little longer." Neveah assured.
"Rest up then, Estelle will come to you soon." Kaideon got up to his feet, patting Neveah’s head adoringly before he took his leave with Rodvan in tow.
