Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 389: Gut Feeling ()
"Narx..." Neveah murmured, her eyes came open to find Menarx staring down at her, a goofy smile on his lips.
A smile Neveah returned with a small, sleepy smile of her own, her eyes still heavy with sleep.
Neveah was not certain she had slept as soundly as she had the night before, perhaps it was finally opening up to Menarx and sharing a piece of her dark past, but Neveah felt so much lighter.
She had slept with no nightmares or no worries at all, only the warmth of Menarx’s arms around her and now she had ended up sleeping far into the morning.
"There she is...rise and shine, my love." Menarx said, he leaned down and placed a light kiss on Neveah’s forehead before he stepped back and carried on with what he had been doing.
"Oh gods... how late is it exactly? Did we have plans today? Or I was meant to report to the academy?" Neveah groaned as she made to sit up on the bed but Menarx quickly dissuaded her.
"No love, your only plan is getting as much rest as you can and making a full recovery. Everon insisted, ordered and warned sternly that you are not to do anything at all till he says it was okay." Menarx replied, shaking his head at Neveah.
"Everon was here this morning?" Neveah asked, she still sat up on the bed, leaning against the headboard.
"A short while ago, he came in to check on you and also helped change my bandages." Menarx relayed.
Neveah was not sure when exactly Menarx woke up but he was halfway dressed in his breeches and a satin shirt and his outer robe was laid over a chair.
"Why didn’t you just wake me? You don’t need Everon for that, I could have it done with much less grumbling." Neveah pointed out.
Menarx chuckled quietly at Neveah’s not so subtle jab at Everon’s tendency to complain constantly at the slightest things.
"I didn’t want to wake you, you needed your rest and he had to check on you in any case." Menarx explained.
"I’m just fine Narx, your injuries seem more serious than mine and you get to move around." Neveah replied with a quiet sigh.
"Come over, let me take a look." Neveah insisted.
Menarx passed a glance over his shoulder at Neveah, a smirk on his lips at her concern.
He complied with Neveah’s request and took a seat on the bed, his back turned to Neveah.
Menarx unbuttoned the top buttons of his shirt, letting it slide down his shoulder so Neveah could see his injured shoulder more clearly.
Neveah inspected the injury, it seemed it was not bleeding so severely but it still showed no signs of healing, whatever progress had been made was out of the picture since Menarx shifted and ripped the wound open again.
"It hurts a lot, doesn’t it?" Neveah asked, gently adjusting the sides of the bandages so it did not press too heavily into the wound.
"I will heal, Veah. It is slow and that is expected since it is adamantium ore but I will heal in a short time, rest assured. " Menarx assured Neveah.
"Those damned dwarves." Neveah murmured beneath her breath.
"Seems to me like there’s still some bad blood there. When are you going to tell me how you found yourself in dwarven territory?" Menarx asked with a raised brow.
"You knew?!" Neveah asked in alarm and Menarx shrugged casually.
"So I wasn’t wrong then. Yes Veah, I knew... I was just about ready to set fire to their city when I heard you were safe." Menarx relayed.
"But...but how?" Neveah asked in surprise.
"Apart from the fact that you showed up in the middle of nowhere with no explanation for how you got there? I found something of yours on some dwarves we captured."
"Left them and everything else to Lodenworth when Jian found you in the Fodder Grooves." Menarx explained.
"You do know you will have to provide us with an answer eventually..." Menarx added.
Neveah sighed and nodded her head.
"I will... just give me some time. I promise you, I wasn’t up to anything suspicious." Neveah said quickly.
"I know that...no one doubts that. Take your time, but not too much time, all things considered, Jian has been really accommodating to not push this." Menarx said and left the topic aside.
A groan of pain escaped him as he moved his shoulder slightly to check the situation for himself.
"If only you can sit put and not go against Everon’s sound medical advice." Neveah stated with a sigh.
"Says the one who has chosen to pretend she did not see the tonic by her side." Menarx called Neveah out, gesturing to the tonic that was slowly brewing on the heating slab.
"I never said I would not drink it." Neveah defended with a roll of her eyes.
"I know you will, you’re a good girl." Menarx praised as he adjusted his shirt and buttoned it back up, he patted Neveah’s head playfully before he got up to his feet.
"The representative of the elven council arrived the keep last night, a rider’s council has been called." Menarx explained.
"Oh? Was that the reason for those drums yesterday?" Neveah asked, recalling she had heard the distant sound of a beating drum.
"In a way. Actually, Davina was the one beating the petition drums... Creator alone knows what she has going on with them elves." Menarx replied.
Neveah frowned slightly at the mention of Davina.
"Maybe I should go with you to the council?" Neveah asked on a second thought.
"Love, Everon will have my head if I let you out of this room before he says. Besides, I do not believe it will be that big of a deal...it shouldn’t." Menarx assured Neveah.
Neveah nodded slowly although she was not certain Menarx was right this time, the mention of Davina had triggered Neveah’s gut feeling... and that feeling in her gut was hardly ever wrong.
