Chapter 373: Revelations 2 (Ch.373)

"Scales! It tastes horrible!" Neveah grumbled in disgust as she handed the bowl of tonic back to Estelle.

Neveah had awakened to find she was in Menarx’s quarters, Estelle and Menarx were also with her and it seemed Everon had taken his leave not so long ago.

All Neveah’s injuries had been well tended to and wrapped up and though Neveah still healed slowly, she would recover in a short time.

The tonic Everon had left behind was also to help Neveah heal faster, though it tasted like it would do quite the opposite.

It had taken Neveah a moment to find her bearings and recall all that had happened back in the forest and now,

Neveah just sat against her headboard and tried not to think of anything beyond the bitter taste on her tongue.

It was not as though thinking of it herself would bring Neveah any concrete answers, the person who held the answers Neveah needed was out on the balcony.

"Lord Everon says you have to drink it all up." Estelle insisted, lightly pushing the bowl back to Neveah’s lips.

Neveah frowned slightly, but she took the bowl and downed the rest of the tonic in one gulp, her face scrunched up in disgust.

"Good girl." Menarx commended as he walked back into the room, behind him was a quiet Kaideon whose gaze was fixed on Neveah.

Neveah’s own gaze was also fixed on Kaideon and for a long moment, neither of them said a word till Neveah broke the stare, clearing her throat.

"I’ll take that." Estelle said, taking the empty bowl from Neveah, she placed it aside before she got up to her feet.

"I’ll go let Dante know you are conscious, he has been very worried but Everon would not permit a crowd here and only allowed me to tend to you." Estelle excused herself.

"Thank you." Neveah said with a small smile.

"I’m just relieved that you are fine, Neveah. Truly." Estelle said, breathing a sigh of relief.

Estelle glanced between Neveah and Kaideon for a moment before she headed out of Menarx’s quarters.

When the door was closed, Neveah was left with Menarx, Kaideon and an extremely awkward silence.

"I should leave you two to talk... figure things out." Menarx took the initiative.

"But..." Neveah began to protest, as she was not sure she wanted to face whatever Kaideon had to say alone.

"You are fine, beloved. I will be right outside, not even an inch away from the door." Menarx assured, he walked over to Neveah’s bedside.

Leaning down, Menarx placed a light kiss on Neveah’s forehead.

"Hear him out, I have known Kaideon all my life. He would never make a claim he is uncertain of. But if it gets uncomfortable, call and I’ll be here to toss him back to the White Dunes." Menarx whispered to Neveah.

Neveah nodded slowly, Menarx’s words calmed her uneasy heart and brought a smile to her lips.

Menarx passed Kaideon a warning look before he strode out, shutting the door behind him.

And now, Neveah was left alone with the Dune Lord and his absurd claim that Neveah could not quite understand or believe.

"Menarx is not that much stronger than I am in battle...by the way." Kaideon broke the silence with the most unexpected words.

Neveah blinked, staring at the Dune Lord in disbelief and he cringed visibly, as if just realising what he had said.

"My apologies, I did not intend to say that out loud...it has been a while, since I did this talking thing." Kaideon murmured, still standing in place a far distance from Neveah’s bed.

It was as though he was scared if he came too close, Neveah would jump out of the bed and run off.

Admittedly, that was not entirely off the table.

"Sit...you can sit." Neveah said quietly, gesturing to the seat beside her bed, or Menarx’s bed to be more accurate since this was infact Menarx’s quarters on the second level.

Kaideon nodded and walked over, taking a seat by Neveah’s bed.

Again, they fell into silence and Neveah had no words to break the silence. It was not an awkward kind of silence, just a strange and uncertain silence.

A silence where neither party knew what to say or dared say what they had to for fear that the other party would not take kindly to it.

It was the kind of silence weighed down by confusion, contemplation and a myriad of emotions that were hard to put in words.

It was the kind of silence that spoke even louder than words would, yet so fragile that it could be shattered by the pains and heartache a single word could evoke at this moment.

What did one even say in this situation? What were the right words to say to something that would change all that they had ever known?

"I... I know this is all so confusing for you..." Kaideon finally braved the first words.

"I would guess it is the same for you..." Neveah murmured quietly.

"I... Neveah, I know...my dragon knows that you have my blood. It’s just... there’s just this feeling and I know you feel it too..." Kaideon began, his words were jumbled, an expression of how his thoughts were.

"I do not know what I feel, Kaideon." Neveah replied with a heavy sigh.

"A few months ago, I watched my father... the only father I have ever known trade me off to the dragons..."

"For five hundred of a thousand dragon gold."

"Five hundred of a thousand dragon gold...Between my own family and the dragons, a strange specie I had only ever read off in books,"

"That was as much as I was worth...What was a myth to my knowledge bought me off from my father right before my eyes and I could say not a word for myself... I have never forgotten this for even a moment, I did not dare to." Neveah said.

"Veah..." Kaideon began in a pained tone but Neveah shook her head slightly.

It was difficult enough to piece together her words and if she did not say them now, Neveah was not certain she would summon the courage to say them again.
