Chapter 198: Of Ore and A Fire Pit (Ch.198)

Neveah arrived back at the makeshift playroom to find it completely empty, Roman was nowhere to be seen and neither was his spell book.

"I leave for just a moment and he is already up to something." Neveah grunted beneath her breath as she searched through the small cottage.

"Ro?" Neveah called as she moved from one room to the other.

Neveah then recalled her words about the barn and heaved a sigh, heading out to the barn.

"Roman...stop playing around!" Neveah called out as she ducked into the barn and still yet Roman was nowhere to be found.

Neveah’s brows furrowed into a frown as she turned around the side of the cottage to the front where Trevin loaded up his cart with barrels which he would take out to the mountains to fill up with ice.

"Oh, Veah. Want to head out to town with me, get some tools from the blacksmith? Most of my tools are rusted." Trevin asked Neveah.

"Sure, I’ll ask Lydia if she has any deliveries. Have you seen Ro?" Neveah asked.

"He ran off into the fields chasing a rabbit a moment ago, he has his eyes sent on the poor thing for his spells. Hopefully, it’s swift enough to escape him." Trevin replied with a chuckle.

Neveah heaved a sigh of relief and Trevin passed her a look.

"Oh don’t let Roman worry you, Veah. That lad is as mischievous as ever, he only acts composed when you’re around and that’s because he adores you."

"You know he gets all starry-eyed whenever you step in." Trevin teased.

"Urggh! Trevin!" Neveah exclaimed in annoyance, shuddering at Trevin’s words.

"Oh come on, give my little man a decade and a few years and you wouldn’t be able to resist him." Trevin added with a wink.

"And you wonder who he takes after?" Neveah asked pointedly.

Trevin laughed heartily knowing he could not argue with Neveah’s words. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"My wife will return from the academy in a few days, she has heard so much about you in Roman’s letters and mine, she just can’t wait to see you."

"I hope she’ll get to see you..." Trevin began then trailed off with a smile.

"I’ll just see how that goes." Neveah replied, not giving any assurances that she would stick around till then.

"Okay, that works." Trevin accepted, as he continued settling the barrels on the cart.

"I’ll just go check with Lydia, see if she needs anything from town." Neveah said as she turned to head to the cottage.

It was at that exact moment a loud scream echoed through the fields and Neveah froze up in place.

The terror in that voice left a churning rage surging up in Neveah’s veins.

Her gaze turned to meet Trevin, no one needed to speak, they both knew exactly who had that voice.

"Stay indoors... I’ll take a look." Trevin instructed immediately as he grabbed a sword which he always carried with him.

"Like hell I will." Neveah refused instantly, breaking into a dash, she darted into the fields, following the sound of Roman’s voice.

_____________

"I think the sound came from this way." Neveah said to Trevin as she slowed down.

It had taken them only a short moment to make their way into the heart of the field, but the field was so vast, just running through it would get them nowhere.

They had to determine an exact direction.

"Roman! Ro! Come on boy, answer me!" Trevin called out from beside Neveah as they searched through the fields.

The grasses were tall, reaching above Neveah’s height and so they had to push their way through.

"Roman!" Trevin called out again, his tone anxious.

Roman’s scream had come so suddenly, neither Neveah nor Trevin could tell exactly what had gone wrong in the short time Roman had spent within the fields by himself.

Neveah’s eyes narrowed, she let her wolf rise to the surface as she scanned the fields before she took notice of Roman’s foot prints.

"He left the fields in this direction...his scream sounded from far off, we could only hear it because of the echo, he must have gone beyond the fields." Neveah said to Trevin.

"Scales!" Trevin exclaimed as he followed Neveah’s lead.

Neveah swiftly trailed the path Roman had taken, the young boy was not fast enough to have gone so far in such a short period of time so Neveah doubted he had crossed all the way to the other side of the fields.

Roman’s footprints instead led left, into a forest barricading the fields.

Neveah did not hesitate to venture into the forest, leaving behind the towering grasses, it was easier to trace Roman’s footprints.

"His footprints are uneven, he must have been after the rabbit and came this far." Neveah said as she walked briskly through the forest.

It had only been a few moments since they heard Roman’s scream, Neveah could not even begin to comprehend what danger Roman had met but time was of the essence.

"His scent is getting stronger." Neveah murmured as her brisk walk graduated to a slow jog, her eyes still roving around the forest.

Neveah let Roman’s scent guide her down the path he had taken up until she arrived at the point where his scent was most concentrated and then Neveah stopped.

"He’s not here..." Trevin murmured in horror.

"He’s not." Neveah agreed as her eyes settled on a log and she slowly walked over to it.

Neveah crouched down, reaching out to the log, her hand met a wet substance and she pulled it back, lifting it up to her view.

"Blood!" Trevin exclaimed, his eyes wide with alarm.

"Trevin, focus!...There is a scent here. I do not know what it is, it smells off moist earth, some kind of metal or an ore and a fire pit...not the kind you get at the black smiths, like a mine or something." Neveah said to Trevin with urgency.

"Dwarves!" Trevin hissed,
