Chapter 152: A Memory Triggered (Ch.152)

~~~~~~~~~~~
Xenon ascended the last of the stairs leading up to the tower, a small smile settling on his lips when he set eyes on her.
The anxiety he felt immediately stilled, and he breathed a deep sigh of relief.
For a moment, he had grown worried, but there she stood, her black tresses cascading down her back in waves, she was dressed in an elegant dress the shade of blue,
Though darkness blanketed the sky and the moon was yet to rise, Xenon could still see it perfectly even in the darkness.
Night vision was but one of the many perks of being a dragon, and to be able to see the beauty clearly in the dark was but an insignificant thing yet it brought a smile to Xenon’s lips.
Everything about her made Xenon smile, she was the center of his happiness... his world, his everything truly.
Xenon knew she was yet to sense his presence and so he quietened his steps till he was right behind her.
His arms encircled her waist from behind and pulled her closer to him, burying his nose in her neck, Xenon breathed in her familiar scent that warmed his heart and eased all his troubles.
Just holding her like this, Xenon forgot all the troubles of his turbulent flight.
She did not resist Xenon’s hold, Xenon was as familiar to her as she was to him and she leaned back into him on instinct.
"There you are... I’ve been searching all over for you." Xenon whispered to her, his voice muffled as placed a kiss on her neck.
"It was stifling being cooped up in the second level, I came out to get some air..." She replied in a warm tone.
"Just for that...?" Xenon asked with a a sulking tone.
"And also to await your return, you silly." She added, laughing quietly at Xenon’s urging.
Her laughter, as warm as she was brought a bright smile to Xenon’s lips.
"You should have just said that first... besides, if you rode with me today, you would not have to miss me." Xenon pointed out.
"I never said I missed you." She laughed out.
"I’ve been gone for two days, you do not need to say it." Xenon replied smugly.
"Silly, when did you get back? I watched for you but your scales blend perfectly in the darkness, I still missed you." She said with a shake of her head.
"My scales make for perfect camouflage...of the beasts of Asvar, you ride the only black scaled. Your dragon is one of a kind." Xenon bragged.
"With his large teeth and bulging eyes, you mean?" She countered.
"I have been told I am a rather handsome dragon...in both forms. That hurts my feelings." Xenon said in a sad tone.
She passed him a look over her shoulder before she shook her head.
"Yes, you are dazzling and warm and you smell like morning dew and earth... amongst other lovable features. You are perfection Xenon...one I am not deserving of." She finally admitted.
Xenon laughed quietly, pulling her closer to himself.
"It is I who has been blessed... this blessing, I will hold unto it forever... and never let go." Xenon vowed in a deep tone.
"Never let go..." She agreed with a smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Xenon’s eyes fluttered open, a pained gasp escaping him as his hand shot up to his chest.

His heart felt tight and stuffy as the memories replayed through his mind.

Memories he loathed to recall... memories he had spent decades trying to forget.

Yet all his efforts proved fruitless, these memories lived just beneath his consciousness, coming to light at every possible moment.

Overtaking his mind at every subtle reminder...as subtle as hearing a similar statement from another.

"Xenon? Are you alright?" Jian’s voice sounded in the background but Xenon paid him no heed,

Xenon’s eyes moved to the bed and for a moment, what was in his sight was a familiar face with black hair splayed out... the face of someone he had loved so dear and hated just as much.

"No...no!" Xenon exclaimed, staggering backwards as he stared with horror.

Jian who was distracted from the scrolls he worked on by Xenon’s sudden awakening jumped to his feet and hurried over to Xenon’s side.

Jian trailed Xenon’s eyes to the bed where Neveah slept, seeing the panic in Xenon’s eyes, an emotion only one could trigger from Xenon... Jian immediately understood.

"Xenon, shake it off. It’s not her... that is Neveah you see... it’s not her." Jian assured, placing both hands on Xenon’s trembling shoulders.

As the prevalent memory faded from Xenon’s mind, the sight on the bed before him changed...from that black haired beauty to Neveah with golden tresses.

"She... reminded you of her, didn’t she?" Jian asked in a low tone as Xenon’s breathing slowly calmed.

Xenon did not respond and Jian did not need a response, he already knew for sure that he was right.

"So why do you keep her so close? One who triggers the same feeling that has brought you so much pain once?" Jian asked in a pained tone.

Xenon again said nothing, instead he rose up to his feet and strode away, heading out through Jian’s balcony.

Jian watched the black dragon take flight, a complicated look in his eyes.

After a moment of staring after Xenon, Jian’s gaze moved to settle on Neveah.

"You look nothing like her...yet you bring with you memories of her." Jian murmured.

Perhaps it was not her intention, but Jian was only willing to see the fact that too many things were changing since Neveah arrived Dragon Keep,

And most of these changes would ultimately forbear troubles.

_______________

A quiet groan escaped Neveah’s lips as her eyes fluttered open, she lifted a hand to shield her eyes from the bright lighting and it took a moment to adjust to it. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

But when Neveah’s eyes did adjust, she stared up at a ceiling she had never seen before, not even in the dragon keep and her brows furrowed.

"Did Menarx let me fall and I ended up dead?... This is the afterlife?" Neveah murmured to herself in bafflement.

However, Neveah could clearly remember what dying felt like and it surely was not so blissful, leaving one brimming with energy.

"If you are awake, then leave." A familiar cold voice interrupted Neveah’s musing.

Neveah shot up to a sitting position with a start, her head snapping almost painfully in her rush to confirm who exactly had spoken to her.

And just as Neveah expected, a blank faced dragon king stared back at her from all the way on the other side of the vast room.

His look was as chilling as ever and his hand was poised on a scroll he seemed to have been working on.

"What... what are you doing here?" Neveah stuttered out in shock.

"What am I doing in my quarters...you mean?" King Jian asked back with a raised brow.

’His room?!’ Neveah shrieked in her mind, panic exploding in her head as her hands shot up to wrap around herself.

King Jian stared at Neveah, uncertain of her reaction which only became clear when Neveah slowly lifted the duvet and stared beneath in a wary manner.

"What did you do to me?" Neveah asked suspiciously, though her shoulders slumped in relief to find herself fully clothed save for her boots.

"What are you thinking? Get off my bed and be on your way." King Jian murmured, as he returned his attention to his scroll.

"Get off and be on my way?" Neveah mouthed with a scoff,

Her features straightened when King Jian’s gaze settled on her again.

"Need I repeat myself for a third time?" King Jian asked with a frown.

"I did not ask to be brought here in the first place, do not snap at me. I am the one who was taken advantage of in my moment of weakness." Neveah grumbled as she stepped off the bed.

King Jian’s gaze narrowed, Neveah had not believed his gaze could get anymore chilling but at Neveah’s accusation, it did.

Neveah swallowed audibly as she quickly pulled on her boots, cursing Xenon in her mind since she recalled his presence the night before.

Neveah then got up to her feet and headed towards the door before pausing in her step.

"Need I throw you off my balcony?" King Jian asked in a dark tone.

"I am certain it would bring you much satisfaction...you have been at my throat since forever, what is new?" Neveah said back with a scoff.

"I only wanted to know... that you have not forgotten your word." Neveah reminded.

King Jian moved his gaze to his scroll,

"When Kalia is restored to health...you will have your wish." King Jian said in a dismissive tone.

"No matter what I ask for...you are duty bound to fulfill it. Do not forget that." Neveah clarified as she turned and headed out.
