Chapter 150: Hold Tight (Ch.150)

Neveah sucked in a deep breath, there was no easy way to go about this, she did not think there was any way to go about it that would make her feel less unsettled than she did now.

When she did not know of it’s deeper meaning, it was much different than now that she was fully aware of it.

Yet, Neveah knew there were hardly any choices at the moment,

Menarx gazed at Neveah for a moment, initially, he found her reaction amusing but seeing her furrowed brows as she seriously contemplated it had him worried.

"I am the one granting you my consent, Veah. There need not be any meaning attached to it so long as we both have an understanding."

"What is most significant is the bond of trust... dragon riding is considered an act of intimacy, that is because whoever rides a dragon is dearly trusted by the dragon."

"And there is none a dragon can trust more than his rider. But I do trust you...so you need not fret." Menarx assured,

"Or we can descend the mountain and get some horses, whatever makes you feel at ease." Menarx offered with a smile.

Neveah clearly was bothered by the thought and Menarx felt slightly guilty for finding it amusing or even suggesting it in the first place.

Meanwhile, Neveah’s supposed contemplating gaze was focused on the small droplets of blood dripping from Menarx’s right arm and not even his words at all.

"You are hurt." Neveah pointed out, she had only just taken notice of it.

Menarx glanced over at his arm as though he just realized it before he shrugged casually.

"It is just a scratch, it will heal." Menarx replied without much care to his condition.

Neveah’s brows furrowed, she had not seen Menarx battle but she was certain he was highly skilled, she just did not see him getting hurt in a fight.

Neveah also recalled the man in black had clearly said he did not underestimate Menarx, which meant whatever Menarx had battled before coming to her was beyond just a kobold.

Just one kobold was not nearly strong enough to harm Menarx, Menarx had said it himself and that was the only reason Neveah left him by himself in the first place,

Although now that Neveah thought of it, she realized that was Menarx’s intention in the first place.

"Is that why you had me leave? Because you knew there was something other than the kobold lurking close by?" Neveah asked with narrowed eyes.

Menarx did not respond, but the slight twitch of his eyes gave him away.

"When you came to me, the creature...was hunting you down?" Neveah guessed.

Menarx had arrived so stealthily and had sent her away just as quickly, while saying she would be a distraction.

"It came for me... they all did. It blocked my path on my way back to you. I could not be at ease to battle it without knowing your condition... so I created a diversion..." Menarx explained.

"With your blood." Neveah completed and Menarx nodded.

"It was the only way to distract it long enough to find you, I am relieved I arrived in time before the kobold sensed you." Menarx replied with a shrug.

Somehow, the conversation had moved right back to Neveah’s safety and Neveah could not understand why Menarx had the luxury to be concerned for her safety and had hurt himself in the process.

"You should learn to focus on your own battles. How have you lived this long being so meddlesome? I can handle myself just fine." Neveah huffed out in annoyance.

"Veah, it is just a scratch...rest easy." Menarx replied with a small smile settled on his lips.

"How do you translate a reprimand to words of concern?" Neveah asked in disbelief.

"Are they not? They sounded like concern to me." Menarx replied with a smug look.

"The loss of blood must have affected your hearing." Neveah decided.

Menarx laughed quietly, his eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Come on, we should head down the mountain now. We have no time to spare." Menarx replied with a shake of his head.

"That will take too long." Neveah refused,

Though she was reluctant at the thought of flight, it was only because of what she had heard from Davina,

But as Menarx had said, it was not an act of intimacy if she did not consider it to be... what actually mattered was if she was willing to accept Menarx’s trust in her.

As much as it baffled her, Neveah did not doubt in the slightest that Menarx did trust her, he had already proven that much.

Menarx’s eagerness to save her and his determination to protect Neveah’s life was a regard Neveah was not certain how she had become deserving of.

"Getting back in time is of greater urgency." Neveah decided, shaking off her hesitation.

Menarx nodded as his form changed right before Neveah’s eyes, muscles enlarging and expanding till the massive red dragon stood before her.

"To shift like this...does it not hurt?" Neveah asked before she realized it.

Menarx’s red orbs settled on her before he grunted beneath his breath, shaking his massive head slightly.

"Well... it is a form you have had all your life, for centuries...it would come natural by now." Neveah murmured thoughtfully.

Neveah sucked in a deep breath before she strode over to Menarx, stopping at his side where she began considering her options.

Menarx was not as large as Xenon, so far, Xenon was the largest dragon Neveah had seen.

However, that did not mean Menarx’s dragon form was small, far from it. Menarx was at least thrice Neveah’s size in wolf form and Neveah’s wolf form was huge.

Admitting to it left a bitter taste on Neveah’s tongue, but compared to the dragons, Neveah’s size could be tagged as insignificant.

Neveah had ridden Xenon a few times before, however even then, she was not certain what the right way was to mount a dragon without a saddle.

Riding a horse without a saddle was no trouble, but a dragon was much different. Every part of their form gleamed like gem, Neveah did not even know where exactly was appropriate to hold.

After riding Xenon a few times, Neveah had created her own path...but Menarx was not Xenon, his built was different, a deadly, untouchable beauty of it’s own.

His red scales truly did look akin to rubies, Neveah guessed they could even be far more precious than the actual gem itself.

"Your wound, does it not reflect in your dragon form?" Neveah asked curiously.

Menarx grunted again and moved his wing slightly to reveal his upper arm where there was a small graze that bled slightly.

Neveah lifted a hand to a spike extended from Menarx’s wing, holding unto it, she placed a foot on his arm and slowly climbed her way up to his back, careful not to hurt him.

"I am not so fragile you know...my scales will not rip off and I can barely feel your weight." A deep, rumbling voice sounded in Neveah’s head.

Neveah was nearly sent tumbling back down to the ground as she yelped in shock.

"How are you in my head?!" Neveah exclaimed.

"Because we are in contact." Menarx replied in Neveah’s head.

"There was such an amazing ability?!" Neveah asked in surprise.

"Xenon cannot communicate with his mind, not to anyone but our Liege...it is an ability he lost along with his speech when his wild haze first began." Menarx thought to Neveah, understanding her question.

Menarx’s voice in Neveah’s head was slightly different than his actual voice, it sounded more animalistic and guttural but was still clear and concise.

Neveah guessed this was Menarx’s voice in dragon form, influenced by his predatory attributes when in dragon form.

However this moment brought a memory back to Neveah’s mind, one she had completely forgotten before this moment.

The memory of a voice in her head, up until this moment, Neveah was not certain if she had just imagined it.

"This is only possible when I am in contact with the dragon?" Neveah asked to be certain.

The intricacies surrounding the dragons were much too complicated, Neveah did not think she would ever understand their ways completely.

"Yes, otherwise you would have heard me in your head before this moment." Menarx replied.

Neveah furrowed her brows slightly before she shrugged and continued up the rest of the way, settling herself on Menarx’s back.

"Hold tight." Menarx’s voice said in Neveah’s mind.

"Don’t I know it?" Neveah replied, heaving a deep sigh as she readied herself for a trip she most certainly was not built for.

In a leap, Menarx’s wings stretched wide, his large wingspan creating a dark shadow over the forest as a single flap of his wing had them airborne.

They soared right over the forest and Menarx ascended to a higher altitude with each passing moment till they flew just below the clouds.
