Chapter 108: Rickety Bridge (Ch.108)

"Lady Adrienne, my father instructs Neveah is to get about her duties immediately. There can be no further delay, I will have to send her away now." Davina interrupted with a bow before the tense situation escalated any further.

"Why the hurry? We have not come to harm her, only to get acquainted with the new attendant of Lord Xenon."

"As attendant to a member of the King’s guard, even we noble born have to be respectful to you. How can we hold contrary intentions?" Lady Adrienne asked, passing glances at her two companions for support.

"My lady, it is unwise to keep Lord Xenon waiting. Neither you nor I can afford the consequences." Davina insisted.

Lady Adrienne frowned slightly, her beautiful features scrunching up before she shrugged casually.

"Very well, a pair of two attendants completely reliant on the backing they have in the keep...go on then." One of Lady Adrienne’s companion, a tall brunette with a sly look on her face said.

"We are thankful for your magnitude." Davina said, lowering her head into a bow.

She nudged Neveah to do the same and Neveah frowned but inclined her head slightly, wincing at the deadly growl of her wolf resounded in her mind.

"That head...it cannot be lowered to just anyone." Neveah’s wolf reminded her and Neveah pursed her lips...it was not that she wanted to bow either, but she did want to live and she saw no better way than laying low.

"Well, what are you waiting for? We shall get acquainted another time. Go on." Lady Adrienne encouraged with a smile.

"You should be on your way. See to Lord Xenon’s affairs and return at sunset." Davina said with a nod.

Neveah headed towards the bridge, dangling so precariously above the chasm and as much as she was tempted to turn around and return back the way she had come, she kept her gaze fixed ahead and her head held high.

It was a short walk to the bridge and Neveah covered the distance in only a moment, she could still feel the eyes of the three females who had come for intentions she was not certain of.

Neveah shook off her awareness of them, what they thought or whatever intentions they had did not matter, what mattered was the fact that Neveah needed to get across the bridge in one piece.

Standing this close to the bridge, Neveah already got a glimpse of the wide chasm and the shadows that reached up from the bottomless abyss, grazing the bottom of the wooden bridge.

The wooden slabs that made up the bridge stretched for a long distance and the bridge itself moved slightly, the wind swinging it ever so slightly.

The slabs were placed apart from each other, with a wide enough space between them that her geet could completely go in between and take her down, plunging to the dark depths.

Neveah sucked in a deep breath to calm herself, there was no cause for panic, panic would only distract her and it was the street placed a foot tentatively at the first wooden slab,

A creaking sound was produced and Neveah groaned beneath her breath, the wood of the bridge itself was old and worn, it could not be considered safe at all.

Whatever forces still held the bridge in place surely did not mean for anyone to come walking across it.

Neveah could not help but wonder how the mighty Dragon Keep could be so regal and indomitable, yet mount Edar right behind it was in such a sorry state.

The glory of the Dragon Keep shielded the darkness beyond it, Neveah guessed the Dragon Keep was in a good condition itself, even if mount Edar were to crumble, why would it be of any consequence to King Jian?

Though King Jian and Xenon seemed to share close ties, Neveah guessed just like her father was to even his own family, a king would always be a king... placing his own interest and that of his kingdom before that of others.

It was only natural for a monarch to be emotionally detached from everyone, it was the only way to ensure a wise and prudent rule.

If Mount Edar had fallen to this state, it was not King Jian’s responsibility to restore it’s glory.

Neveah sighed again, she was not sure just what had happened to Xenon and how she found herself in the middle of all of this but all that could be done was to keep her head up high and just keep walking.

With a shake of her head, Neveah continued across the bridge, with more confidence than she has taken the first steps and though the bridge weathered with age creaked at Neveah’s weight, she kept her gaze ahead.

One step at a time, Neveah got further and further on the bridge till, however just as she got halfway across the bridge,

She sensed something coming her way and her hand shot up on instinct, catching a medium sized rock just before it could make contact with her head.

Neveah’s sudden movement caused the bridge to swing a little and Neveah nearly lost her balance, her left foot slipping down into the opening.

Neveah was quick to shift her weight to her right foot, so her left foot just dangled through the opening in the bridge with no foothold.

Slowly, Neveah withdrew her foot and placed it back on the wooden slab, a frown settled over her face as she glanced over her shoulder to meet Davina’s wide eyes.

"Neveah! Be careful!" Davina exclaimed, placing a hand over her chest.

"The clumsy pup will go tumbling down one day or the next, you just wait for it." The tall brunette said, cackling evilly.

From their reaction, Neveah deduced they had not taken note of the rock that almost hit her since her back was faced to them, shielding all that had happened from view.

But Neveah was certain the rock held in her grasp had not dislodged itself and shot itself at her head to distract her and cause a fall, the rock could not do this all by itself.

Which could only mean someone in close proximity had played a very unsettling joke and it most certainly was one of the three.

"One of them... wields magic." Neveah’s wolf thought to her, Neveah did not need to ask further to know who it was.

Of the creatures Neveah knew with the ability to wield magic, there was only the witches, the fairies and some mortals blessed with the ability of sorcery.

Neveah could not be sure who exactly had done it but her gaze narrowed slightly as her hand clenched into fists, crushing the rock in her grasp to sand.

"These days...they will be difficult days." Neveah murmured to herself as she stared up at the three females and Davina again, only to find their wide eyed look.

"What are they looking at?" Neveah wondered, glancing down at herself just in case but there was nothing to be seen.

"The black dragon...he is here." Neveah’s wolf gave the answer to her questions.

It was only then Neveah realized, in the haze of her anger, she had not taken notice of that intimidating aura that sent a chill of terror running down her spine.

Slowly, Neveah turned around to find Xenon indeed stood on the other edge of the bridge in all his glory.

He stood regal and tall, his muscular arms on full display through the sleeveless robe he wore, his robes were pitch black, made of pure leather and fluttered in the wind behind him.

His arms were crossed behind his back and his shoulder length black hair fluttered all about his face, his black orbs were fixed on Neveah and his expression was it’s usual dark, brooding look.

Neveah blinked in astonishment, she had not set eyes on Xenon since he left her a few hours ago, the moment she awakened but it seemed as though in those few hours, he had grown even better looking.

"His appearance is not the point." Neveah’s wolf reminded her.

"Right..." Neveah agreed, shaking off her momentary distraction.

The point was not his appearance at all but the fact that he was right there, showing up out of nowhere and standing at the other end of the bridge.

And as he stood there, his hand lifted slowly till it was stretched out his palm open and then in a low drawl, he said a single word but just that word was as though he had said many...

"Come..." Xenon drawled in a low tone, low but audible enough that Neveah who was halfway across the bridge could hear him clearly.

And for those who could not hear, it was astonishing enough to see that for the first time in decades... the black fiend... the most feared Lord Dragon,

He had come down in person and with an outstretched hand, he welcomed a stranger into his abode...
