Chapter 105: The Healer’s Hall 2 (Ch.105)

In the Asvarian stronghold, there were many academies of crafts for the Asvarian people who were of mortal birth,

They were not of the bloodline of the Asvarian beasts but were under the protection of the great Asvarian beasts who ruled the Asvarian territory.

Amongst these academies, there was the healer’s academy, the academy of smiths, the sword guild, the academy of magic and many others of less prestige than the aforementioned.

The healers academy was one of the most respected academies and only the most talented were granted entry into the healer’s academy, to study the healing arts and earn a place amongst the elite of the Asvarian stronghold.

The study hall was a place where the very best of the healer’s academy came to receive lectures from the royal healers and the high healer himself.

It was accessible only to those trainees who had earned their healer’s crest after summers of intensive study in the academy.

These trainees were known as the healers in waiting who were in the final session of their studies in the academy and were highly respected.

At the moment, a royal healer sat facing a row of fifteen trainees who listened attentively as he spoke of the health benefits of a certain herb and the trainees listened with rapt attention.

However, the moment Neveah stepped into the study hall, the royal healer who was speaking stopped short and just like that, all eyes turned to settle on Neveah and quiet murmurings began.

"Isn’t that the wolf shifter?"

"What is she doing here?"

Neveah could clearly hear the trainees whisper amongst themselves but she continued ahead with Davina, moving past the study hall into the infirmary.

The infirmary was situated in an adjoining room to the study hall, it was also a large hall, but the moment they stepped in, there was a frowning young man standing by a shelf, sniffing a vial with a strange colored content.

Neveah wondered if they would go through another question and answer session before they were lead to the high healer, it was only when Davina spoke that she realized this young man was infact the high healer.

"Morning greetings, Your Eminence." Davina greeted with a bow, she turned her glance to Neveah and narrowed her eyes, gesturing for Neveah to replicate her actions.

Neveah raised a single brow as she watched Davina’s expression, her gaze was still fixed on Davina when the gaze of the high healer turned to settle on her.

"Lord Everon, she is not aware of the proper etiquette..." Davina began to explain but the high healer cut Davina off with a bored wave of his hand.

"I personally do not fancy you all bowing about in my presence... I think I just might like this one." Lord Everon said as his gaze moved to settle on Neveah.

"You look alive... good." Lord Everon commented as he turned and strode away, his robes trailing behind him.

"You will get yourself in a whole lot of trouble." Davina murmured, shaking her head at Neveah as she quickly followed after Lord Everon and Neveah did the same too.

The infirmary was even more vast than Neveah had thought, moving down a hallway from the hall they had met Lord Everon, he lead the way past multiple doors till they arrived at a door where he stopped.

Pushing the door open, he stepped in to what seemed to be a mix between a study and a herb storage room, with dozens of shelves filled with herb boxes.

Neveah’s nose twitched as the pungent scent of medicinal herbs, clogged her sensitive nostrils and she had to clench her fist to overcome the urge to sneeze.

Lord Everon paid no attention to them as he fumbled with a herb box, picking out a few herbs with a pair of tongs, setting it on the tray he had picked up from his table.

He moved to another shelf and sorted through the herbs picking out another few.

"Dav? Pass me the yellow belladonna on the shelf to your left." Lord Everon said all of a sudden while he still sorted through the herbs on the shelf he stood before two shelves away from them.

"Of course, Your Eminence." Davina replied immediately as she turned to the shelf Lord Everon spoke of, she reached to the closest box to her.

"That’s not it... it’s the box two boxes to the left of that." Neveah said as she scrunched her nose up, the smell of the herbs was overwhelming.

Davina passed Neveah a look of confusion.

"How do you know that?" Davina asked as she complied with Neveah’s direction and pulled open the box Neveah spoke off, to reveal it was indeed the yellow belladonna.

"That stench..." Neveah grumbled, sniffling as she scrunched her nose up again, her gaze furrowed in displeasure.

"You can pick out the scent of just this one herb amongst all hundreds of herb boxes here?" Davina asked with a raised brow.

"They all stink differently...not so hard to tell." Neveah grumbled again and Davina chuckled beneath her breath as she reached out to pick up the herb. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Neveah’s eyes widened, her hand shooting out to grab Davina’s wrist before she could touch the herb.

"Don’t touch that, the stem of a hundred year old yellow belladonna is poisonous to humans...will paralyze you completely if you make skin contact." Neveah said as she glanced around and picked up a clean white rag on the shelf.

Using the rag, she gently picked up the yellow belladonna from the box, ensuring it did not touch her skin.

"You’re not human." Lord Everon pointed out as he watched Neveah from where he stood as she carefully picked up the herb, ensuring she had no skin contact with it.

Neveah had not even realized Lord Everon’s gaze was fixed on her all along, right from the moment she pointed out the right box containing the belladonna.

"What is poisonous to humans is not any less poisonous to a wolf shifter. For a human, it would most likely result in permanent paralysis. As for a wolf shifter, I would be unable to use my hand for at least two days." Neveah said in a matter of fact tone.

"And how are you certain of that?" Lord Everon asked as he beckoned on Neveah to bring the yellow belladonna to him.

Neveah who was just about handing it over to Davina frowned slightly but headed over to the high healer and stretched out the clean rag where the herb was laid.

Lord Everon gestured to the tray he held, Neveah placed the herb down on it and was about stepping back.

"Stay right there and answer my question." Lord Everon said.

"I read about it somewhere once and made some personal findings in my free time." Neveah said in a blank tone, earning herself a look from Lord Everon.

"And how many herbs have you read of somewhere?" Lord Everon asked.

"I don’t know... thousands, all that grow where I come from and whatever else the ancient texts in the hall of omega’s healers had to tell." Neveah replied.

"Hmmm.... fetch me a white doranian petal then...from the shelf behind you." Lord Everon instructed.

"Are you jesting?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.

"Neveah! You do not speak to the high healer in such a manner." Davina cautioned meanwhile Lord Everon just stared at Neveah with a raised brow.

Neveah cleared her throat, she was already losing patience with all of this, she had thought they had come here to fetch a tonic and be on their way, what was this unnecessary delay all about?

"The herb you ask for is in the box right infront of you, not in the shelf behind me. Behind me, there is only a white coral leaf and though they both look somewhat similar, the do not smell alike at all." Neveah grumbled out,

Lord Everon tilted his head to the side, just watching Neveah quietly before he opened the box before him to reveal it was a white doranian petal as Neveah had said.

"Why? For what reason do you go about studying herbs?" Lord Everon asked.

Neveah frowned slightly, that was not a matter she was willing to speak of. She did not know how she would say the words,

That her stepmother had taken her for a test subject to her poisonous herbs and eventually, Neveah had begun researching herbs for herself,

The appearance, the smell, the effect and the antidotes whenever she could, just so she could survive through it.

The more the Alpha Queen was anxious to kill her, the more Neveah needed to know and so she studied herbs at whatever chance she got, herbs that grew in wolf territory and even beyond.

But all of these were a past Neveah only wanted to keep to herself.

"Because I had to..." Neveah replied simply, crossing her arms over her chest and turning her face away.
