Obsessed to Hate Him-Chapter 62: "I am here because of you."
KIAN
Why did I follow Liam? Did I want to ask him why do I feel so betrayed at this moment? Probably. But is this why I followed him out of the bathroom? No. Do I want an explanation? Yes. But will I ask for it? Over my dead body.
One thing the people in this entire continent can confirm is that Kian’s pride and ego are as big as the ocean itself. And it won’t allow me to ask Liam why he left the ballroom looking like he is about to burn everything down? And it won’t allow me to ask him all those questions as well.
But I shouldn’t be feeling all these things that I am feeling right now as I stare into Liam’s emerald sea and when he exhales as if he wasn’t breathing up until now. I really shouldn’t...
Liam’s eyes instantly sharpen and his face twitches with hatred and hostility. I blow out a quiet sigh.
It’s more like it. I don’t want the Liam that makes me feel things I shouldn’t feel. I prefer Liam, who keeps me on my toes and gives me a good thrill. But I can’t ignore the way the soft silver moonlight has cascaded over his angelic features and making him otherworldly.
"What are you doing here?" His tone edges toward a low danger zone. "I am not in the mood to play with you, Kian."
I smother a smile and approach him, ignoring the pile of crushed railing on the other side of the rooftop. "Oh come on, Liam. You could have at least told me that you are getting married. I would have congratulated you ahead." I stand beside him, watching him intently. My eyes are taking his moonlit form hungrily, savoring it.
Liam lets out a scoff as he turns his gaze away from me and looks up at the sky, "As if I knew in the first place."
"What do you mean?" I ask out of morbid curiosity and maybe something more that I would never name in a thousand years.
"Vivana told me about this engagement last night." Liam exhales softly. And for the first time, I can see, no, feel how much tired and worn he is right now.
There are faint grooves on his perfect face and slight smudges under his eyes. He looks exhausted and he is doing his best to look anything but that.
It makes me realize how well and free-spirited Liam was during our time together in Oblivara. He might be on guard constantly but at least he didn’t look as worn as he looks right now.
My lips quiver but I press them into a thin line. "Do you even know who the bride is?" I ask, trying my best to sound sarcastic.
"It’s my assistant." Liam’s head droops between his shoulders, looking utterly disappointed. "This is my problem. I don’t want Kelly to be my bride. She is such an incompetent and troublesome woman."
I snort, "Then how can such a woman become your assistant in the first place?" Trying to sound as unbothered and light-hearted as possible.
"She has exceptional skills in combat." Liam looks down on the back of his hand, "This is why Eiden selected her as my peer when we were little."
His words hang between us, adding another layer to the thick tension in the air between us. It is so palpable that I can almost taste the unpleasantness on the tip of my tongue.
I remain quiet for a few beats before slowly unsheathing the small blade that was carefully tucked way inside my clothes. I hold the shiny cool tip to Liam’s pearl white throat.
"Liam, I have you at my blade’s point," I say neutrally; my expression doesn’t give away any emotions, yet there is a storm brewing behind the calm surface. "Say, Liam, if I try to kill you now, would you retaliate?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Liam doesn’t even move, and his breathing is barely detectable as he replies with just enough blankness that mirrors mine, "No. If you attack me now, I won’t resist you." He pauses, his grip on the railing loosening, "But it is only for now. I will kill you if you spare me now." His voice is edged with underlined warning.
It makes me almost chuckle as I sheathe my knife and tuck it away, "Then I won’t kill you now. I will wait until the cat is ready to resist his doom."
"What do you mean?" Liam replies sharply, "Are you playing with me?"
I chuckle as I lean against the railing beside him, straying my gaze from him for a brief moment to look up at the sky. I can still faintly hear the chatting and music coming from the ballroom. "Here I thought that I was being so damn obvious that even idiots can understand it." I mock, holding back the laughter in my throat.
No matter how much I try to lighten the mood, to make the air breathable, it only feels more suffocating. It is as damn clear as the daylight that Liam doesn’t want to marry this Kelly girl. And I can sense the fury and rage rolling off of him in waves. But they are not only for me. The whole royal court and the royal family are going to be the prey of Liam’s wrath. And I will pay to watch what he does with the pests who call themselves the royalties.
"Shut up." Liam hisses, not looking at my way at all. It makes me a little annoyed, but I can handle it. "Did you come up here to make fun of me?" He counters sharply, clearly in an extremely bad mood.
"No," I reply simply and honestly without even thinking twice because I don’t have to.
"Then why are you here?" Liam still doesn’t look at me, "To kill me?"
"No." I return.
"Then? Why are you here?" Liam sounds unimpressed.
"I am here because of you."
Liam lifts his head and finally looks at me with those green eyes.
Finally.
