Chapter 52: Massacre

LIAM

I clasp my hand against my mouth before a gasp rips through me. I can see the little boy’s eyes filled with fear. His limbs are tied to the wooden platform firmly. His mouth is hanging open in such a manner as if he is trying to scream but there is nothing to come out.

Suddenly Saint Christopher lowers his blade, piercing his chest. The child, at last, starts to scream his lungs out. The blood-curdling agonized scream intensifies when Christopher replaces the knife with his own hand and rips out the boy’s still-beating heart. Crimson blood is smearing his hand and the heart.

Christopher does all that without erasing the smile pasted on his face, his eyes are crescent.

My stomach twists, and my dinner hits the back of my throat. I regret even eating something.

This is too much...

My head is ringing with the boy’s now fading scream, dread coiling inside my stomach and swirling. Sweat drenches my skin as my heart starts to pump blood into my head. I tear my eye away from the hole, and my breathing raged. It disturbs the eerie stillness of the dark hallway.

I have no idea what these maniacs are going to do with that heart or the blood but I know that I need to put a stop to whatever this is. I am not a justice sucker but I can’t keep my eyes closed when they are clearly mass murdering children in front of my damn eyes.

"Crystal," I call out to my familiar, who lingers in the air. My cold and calm voice rings out through the empty hallway, reverberating against the walls.

"Yes, master." She acknowledges.

"Kill them all." I get on my feet, still sweating profusely in the freezing weather though my voice is so calm that it is completely at odds with my wide eyes and slightly uneven breathing. "Leave the priest. I want to ask him a few questions."

"As you say, master." Crystal transforms into her human form.

I can feel bloodlust rolling off her in dark thunderous waves. The double doors of the hall fly open as she enters the hall with so much poise that belies her murderous intent.

Everyone in the room’s head snaps in her direction and this is the only thing I notice before the doors slam shut behind her with a loud bang. I clench my fist to ease the thumping of my heart.

Screams of agony and dread start to fly out of the room, so loud that they echo through the whole wing. I know that everyone is putting on resistance against Crystal. But there is too much you can do against a ghost who can manipulate blood at her own wish. She might not be the mightiest, but taking her lightly is the last mistake her opponents will ever commit.

A copper stench of blood starts to waft through the double doors. Blood is flowing out of the room through the almost non-existent space under the double doors. Not that I care, but it only fuels my nausea.

The door swings open after a while and Crystal steps out smeared in blood head to toe. Even her saber is dripping with blood. But her expression remains blank as ever. I am a little surprised that she used her blade on them because I anticipated her to simply drain their blood out. But I am not complaining. She is carrying the pale dead body of the little boy, crimson blossoming on his hollow chest.

I stare at his innocent face for a little while before I rip my gaze away. "Can you bury him?"

"Sure, master." Crystal starts to walk down the hallway without any more words.

I stare at her retreating back before looking into the hall. A primal pleasure shoots through me at the sight of it. Blood everywhere. The limp bodies of the nuns lie prone everywhere on the ground. I enter the hall, walking through the pile of bodies and blood, the intense stench of blood grazing my nose and flooding my system.

I stalk up to the platform and climb it up without batting an eye. Christopher is hunched behind the wooden platform as if trying to hide. My eyes narrow into slits as I watch him cower.

"Why did you kill him?" I ask, icicles dripping from my every word.

Christopher’s head darts in my direction, his eyes bloodshot as if he has just seen a ghost. Apparently, he did.

"Why are you here?" He hisses, his eyes brimming with desperation, though I am not sure for what.

"He was a blood sacrifice, for my lord." Christopher straightens up, erasing the trace of desperation in his eyes. He smiles mildly making my skin crawl.

"Stop with the bullshit." I spit as I wrap my fingers around Christopher’s throat and pin him down on the surface of the platform. My movement is so stealthy yet so vicious that he yelps and gags. "Now tell me, how many children have you killed so far?" My voice is lethally soft as I squeeze his throat harder, making him choke.

"They were all sacrifices." He replies softly, his smile not faltering.

Anger rises to my head as I am a breath away from snapping his throat. "Who is your lord?"

"My lord is the Almighty." He gags but doesn’t wane.

My patience is running thin at his point as I pin him down harder on the surface, the wood cracking beneath him. "Where is Oliver?" I squeeze out through my gritted teeth.

"M-My lord has taken his greatest servant!" Christopher sputters as he doesn’t retaliate against my death grip.

Black beads dance across my vision as my heart stops for a second at the revelation. My grip tightens around his neck, making him choke out a puddle of blood violently.

"What do you mean?" I hiss.

"The lord has taken him." He smiles with his bloody teeth and I snap.

I crush his throat, and he dies before he can take in another breath.

I pant softly as despair and grief are about to crash down on me. But it stills. Everything freezes, even the air, as a deathly familiar voice speaks softly behind me.

"Liam."
