Novel's Extra: The Lost Heir of Dragon Queen-Chapter 49: A Rank Mission.(1)
"It doesn’t matter," Kael replied, his voice steady. His finger pointed to one of the glowing entries.
"We’re taking this A-rank mission."
Marcus’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"Are you serious, Kael? An A-rank mission? Look at us! We barely have coordination, and you’re suggesting we take on something that could get us killed!" Marcus said.
"He’s not entirely wrong. A-rank missions aren’t just about strength—they require experience and teamwork. And we’re still working on that." Aeline said while folding her arms, her expression calm but laced with concern.
Kael turned to them, his gaze unwavering.
"It will be fine. I wouldn’t suggest it if I didn’t think we could handle it. This is about more than just playing it safe—we’re here to win. If we don’t take risks, we’ll fall behind."
Lira hesitated, biting her lip.
"But Kael, what if something goes wrong?" She added.
Kael expression softened slightly.
"It won’t. Trust me on this." Kael said.
Ren finally spoke, his tone measured. "If Kael thinks we can do it, then I’m in. But if this goes sideways, we’re pulling out immediately."
The others exchanged glances before nodding reluctantly.
"Fine," Marcus grumbled. "But if I get killed, I’m haunting you."
Kael took the glowing entry for the A-rank mission from the board, handing it to the assistant stationed nearby.
She glanced at it briefly before nodding and pulling out a scroll wrapped in silver bindings.
"Here’s the mission scroll," the assistant said.
"This one is a portal-based task. Go to this coordinates. Be cautious—these missions are highly unpredictable."
Kael accepted the scroll, his expression calm but determined.
"We’ll manage."
The mission they selected was simple in description but ominous in implications:
Investigate and neutralize the source of abnormal magical activity reported near the Forgotten Rift.
In Simple words they had to close the portal.
As they arrived at the rift, a swirling vortex of crimson and blue magic loomed before them.
The air was heavy.
"Well, this doesn’t scream ’easy,’" Ren muttered, stringing his bow.

Kael ignored the remark, stepping forward to examine the portal.
He glanced back at his team.
"Once we’re in, stay alert. We don’t know what’s waiting for us, but we’ll figure it out together." Kael said.
One by one, they stepped into the portal, a wave of energy washing over them.
They emerged in a strange, alien landscape.
The sky above was a swirling mix of purple and gold. Towering obsidian spires jutted out of the ground, and strange, glowing glyphs pulsed faintly on the surfaces.
The air hummed with an unsettling energy.
"This place..." Aelina whispered, her voice tinged with awe.
Lira crouched low, scanning the area.
"No signs of life. Yet." Lira said.
Kael unsheathed his sword, his senses heightened.
"Stay close. We move as a unit."
As they ventured deeper, the air grew colder.
"ROOAARRRRR....
"Something’s coming," Marcus said, gripping his weapon tightly.
The shadows around them began to move, taking shape.
From the darkness emerged grotesque creatures—twisted amalgamations of beasts and men, their glowing red eyes locked onto the intruders.
"Positions!" Kael barked, his voice cutting through the rising tension.
Ren and Aelina moved to the rear, readying their attacks, while Lira darted to the side, disappearing into the shadows for a flanking position.
The creatures lunged.
SLASH
Kael’s blade flashed as he parried the first strike.
Marcus charged forward, his sword parrying into another creature.
"Aelina, now!" Kael shouted.
Aelina’s hands glowed with fiery energy, and she unleashed a barrage of ice.
The creatures shrieked as the ice consumed them, but more continued to emerge.
"How many of these things are there?" Ren called out, firing arrow after arrow with deadly precision.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"They’re testing us." Kael said while slashing another monster.
As the last creature fell, the ground began to rumble.
A massive glyph on one of the spires began to glow brighter, pulsating like a heartbeat.
"Something’s triggering the magic here," Kael said, his voice calm but firm. "We need to move—now."
The team regrouped, their breath heavy.
"Everyone still alive?" Lira quipped, wiping blood from her dagger.
"Keep joking," Marcus grunted, "and you’ll end up as monster bait."
Kael glanced back at the glowing glyphs, his mind already piecing together the puzzle.
"This is just the start," he said. "And it’s going to get a lot worse."
The team advanced deeper into the strange place.
The air was thick with magic, making it hard to breathe.
Kael stopped abruptly, raising his hand to signal a halt.
"There’s something ahead." He said.
The path narrowed into a vast chasm, its depths obscured by swirling mist.
Suspended in the center was a massive crystal pulsating with dark energy.
Around it, more of the grotesque creatures prowled, but these were larger, more formidable, their glowing eyes locked on the intruders.
"That’s the source," Aelina said, her voice steady.
"If we destroy it, the portal should destabilize."
"And unleash every one of those things on us before it closes."
Kael turned to his team.
"Here’s the plan: Ren and Aelina will provide cover fire from this ridge. Marcus, Lira, and I will take the front line and distract them. Aelina, once the path is clear, I need you to focus all your power on that crystal. We’ll hold them off as long as we can."
"You make it sound so easy," Marcus muttered, gripping his shield.
"It’s not supposed to be easy," Kael said, a faint grin tugging at his lips.
The team took their positions.
As the first arrow flew, striking one of the creatures, chaos erupted.
Kael charged forward, his blade cutting through the first wave of attackers.
Marcus followed closely, his sword cutting down the rest ones.
Lira darted between enemies, her daggers striking with deadly precision.
From the ridge, Aelina’s hands glowed with ethereal light as she launched a barrage of magical attacks, while Ren’s arrows found their marks with unerring accuracy.
Despite their coordination, the creatures seemed endless, their numbers growing with every passing moment.
"Kael, this isn’t sustainable!" Marcus shouted as he parried a clawed swipe.
"It doesn’t have to be!" Kael replied, slashing another beast.
"Aelina, is it ready?" Kael asked.
Aelina nodded, her voice strained.
"I need ten more seconds!"
"Buy her those ten seconds!" Kael roared, rallying his team.
Just as Aelina began to channel her energy toward the crystal, a deafening roar shook the battlefield.
The ground cracked, and from the depths of the chasm emerged a towering beast unlike anything they had faced before.
"We are fucked." Ren muttered.
