As Dean waited anxiously, there was still no sign of a connection coming through from Little Mike's end.
This made him feel a bit uneasy. ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐ท๐๐ฟ๐๐ต.๐๐๐
Not caring about exposing his signal, Dean dialed directly to the security office at the manor where Little Mike resided.
The security, along with the gardeners, nannies, and butler serving the manor, were all salaried by him.
Technically, Dean was their real boss.
These people were specifically responsible for Little Mike's daily life, safety, and surveillance.
Fortunately, there were no surprises this time.
On the other end of the phone, a gruff voice picked up Dean's call immediately, "BOSS?"
"Yes, is there anything abnormal at the manor?"
Dean instinctively lowered his voice.
"No, everything is normal, BOSS," the voice paused on the other end, then continued as if mustering courage, "However, the butler says that Mr. Mike's health has been deteriorating lately, and... and..."
"And what?"
"And Mr. Mike seems to be busy with some strange things lately. The security responsible for cleaning recently found some remains in the trash chute. They appear to be the ashes of some sort of organism..."
Upon hearing this, Dean exhaled a sigh of relief.
Those ashes must be the remains of the small mice Little Mike incinerated after his experiments. That was a small incinerator Dean had specially purchased for Little Mike to maintain secrecy after delivering the small lab mice. Although it couldn't handle large animal carcasses, it had no problem dealing with small mice.
That being said, these security and logistics staff were ultimately hired through connections with the wealthy Ross. While they were reliable for keeping secrets, they weren't entirely reliable. After securing enough economic resources and personnel in the future, I'd still need to use my own people.
However, Dean was more inclined to provide Little Mike with a separate laboratoryโor rather, an experimental baseโin the future. He believed Little Mike wouldn't refuse once he knew.
After confirming Little Mike was not in danger, Dean inquired about the manor's recent situation before hanging up.
ใHalf an hour later.ใ
Little Mike finally returned the call. "Sorry, I spent some time gathering some data. I have the results you wanted."
Listening to the cold voice coming from the other end, Dean said irritably, "You could have at least given me a heads-up."
"You can easily confirm my safety, but returning the call would waste a few seconds of my time, just as explaining to you now is actually a waste of time.
"My time is running out. The overexertion from daily experiments is causing my health to deteriorate continuously. I probably have less than six months left, after which organ failure will rob me of my ability to move. So, I need to cherish my limited time and not waste it on unnecessary things."
Little Mike's voice was indifferent, but Dean felt somewhat ashamed listening to him.
I have indeed been somewhat negligent in helping Little Mike.
Luckily, Little Mike wasn't one for pettiness. He didn't harbor such feelings and simply continued, "Because there are a lot of ciphers in the documentation from the SWAT base, to decode them as quickly as possible, I directly searched for wars that occurred in all regions of the world during the 1960s. The most fitting location was Vietnam.
"To ensure the accuracy of the information, I directly accessed a newly established database at the Pentagon and found the relevant sections that had been stored. Although these documents aren't exactly secrets, they confirmed my hypothesis."
"Vietnam?"
Dean's mind flashed with things he knew.
In my previous life, war between the United States and Vietnam occurred from 1955 to 1975. As I've previously mentioned, this world resembles a parallel universe to my previous life, where many things seem familiar yet different. This includes the global situation. It's a rather complex history. It generally involved striving for global influence, supporting proxies to seize territory, and fighting for ideological dominance. The US controlled its proxies, using the Philippines as a springboard to wage war on Vietnam... Because of the terrain, the war wasn't as easy as the US initially envisioned. Instead, it turned into a protracted and brutal tug-of-war. That was just the beginning; many more complex international situations followed, leading to a war that swept across the Eastern Hemisphere. I won't go into detail here. My main areas of activity in my previous life were in Southeast Asia and Europe, so I was quite familiar with Vietnam, especially its jungle terrainโvery suitable for burying bodies. Of course, it would be even better if that godforsaken place had fewer landmines left over from the war. So, the so-called 'Gates of Hell' project was aimed at Vietnam? But what does that have to do with a small SWAT team in Los Angeles?
Dean had found it strange before.
A SWAT unit, as a city's counter-terrorism team, usually has at most ten to twenty members. What qualifications or financial backing would they have to establish a base? Unless they're just the base's security team.
These thoughts, seemingly complex, actually flashed through Dean's mind in only a second or two.
He thought for a moment, then said gravely, "Just give me the bottom line."
This isn't the time to investigate these things. The killer hasn't been identified, the threat on campus isn't clear, and I haven't even had time to check on Daisy. My time is tight.
"I've deduced from some surface-level documents at the Pentagon that the United States Federation, under threat from the northern bears at the time, wanted to end the war quickly.
