No.1 in basketball scoring-Chapter 89 - 78. California Champion!_4
Chapter 89: 78. California Champion!_4
From the start, Zhang Yang and DeRozan coordinated routinely, going all out, but they were outplayed by the opposing team. By the second quarter, the pair changed strategies. With better stamina, Zhang Yang launched aggressive attacks, and DeRozan harvested the game.
Zeller, as a main center, indeed had a strong impact, but faced with Zhang Yang’s fierce offense, DeRozan and Keith’s more accurate catching and shooting, and Tatum assisting in counterattacks, they withstood California High School’s team attack.
When it was time for DeRozan to wrap up the game, California High School had no one who could step up. While Zeller had a high success rate for individual plays, Compton High School tightened their defense, and California High School lacked anyone who could match DeRozan’s consistency in the final moments of the game.
Zhang Yang scored 32 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, gave 2 assists, made 3 steals, and blocked 1 shot, DeRozan scored 28 points, Keith 18 points, and Tatum 12 points with 7 rebounds and 8 assists... overshadowing Zeller’s 26 points, 20 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Compton High School came from behind to beat California High School 92 to 85, advancing to the quarterfinals!
Zhang Yang watched Zeller, who was holding his head in despair after the loss, and once again realized why top centers are so captivating... In high school leagues, tall players like Zeller are top centers, playing far more significant roles than other positions.
On the 18th, in the first tier CIF Championship quarterfinals, the third district’s teams were reduced by half, but still three remained, which was a higher proportion than at the round of sixteen.
Today, Compton High School’s competitor was Oakland High School, who had beaten them last year, and also a seeded team, the top seed in the region.
Given the near upset in yesterday’s game, Zhang Yang and DeRozan were on high alert today... and then they won comfortably, 114 to 102.
Compton High School was clearly much stronger than last year, while Oakland High School, with their star Glenn Davis from the class of 2004 and ranked 11th nationwide, having graduated last summer, though still regional leaders, were not as strong as the previous season.
By the 19th, only four teams remained in the tournament: Compton High School, Inglewood High School, Our Lady High School, and Carson City Genoa High School.
At 10 am, Compton High School and Inglewood High School kicked off their ’district derby’ in the semifinals, followed by Our Lady High School versus Genoa High School in the afternoon.
Inglewood High School didn’t last long, surrendering in the second half.
Throughout the league stages, they had lost only five games; they had lost one to Lynwood High School, another to Southern California High School, and the remaining three were to Compton High School!
Out of just over 30 games, they faced Compton High School 3 times! 3 times! Do you know how they felt about those 3 games? Nightmares!
The first time they met, they still harbored hopes of taking down Zhang Yang and DeRozan, but by the second game, they had lost confidence, and by the third encounter, they were utterly defeated...
The final score was 89 to 106, Inglewood High School lost to Compton High School, stopping at the semifinals.
Looking at the opposite side of the court where Zhang Yang, DeRozan, Tatum, Keith, and Miller stood, the 12th-grade players from Inglewood High School thought to themselves that their high school nightmare was finally over. They weren’t top 100 nationwide; why bother competing against these guys!
But the 10th and 11th graders were splitting at the seams, of those five on the opposite side, four were 11th graders, one was a 10th grader!
And remember, their junior varsity team still had a 9th-grade Gordon and a 10th-grade Aboya...
Competing against these 7, even if the remaining 3 were cheerleaders, the 10th and 11th graders from Inglewood High School would want to explode on the spot!
Moreover, the remaining three from Compton High weren’t cheerleaders; the 10th-grade point guard Smith and 11th-grade point guard Jimmy Anderson were quite skilled... Those players from Inglewood High School who were deemed geniuses during middle school now regretted choosing a third-district high school.
When they first entered high school, there was a giant demon king in the third district, Jordan Farmar.
They had barely endured until Farmar graduated, and then here came Zhang Yang and DeRozan! And it was two at once, both on the same team!
They had chosen Inglewood High School, one of the two kings of the third district; how could their lives be so miserable?
March 20th arrived, the day of the finals.
In the evening, just before the start of the game, Oakland University’s stadium, with over 8000 seats, was filled to capacity.
The contestants were Compton High School and Our Lady High School.
Most were there for Compton High School... precisely, for Zhang Yang and DeRozan.
Scouts, agents, were purely there for these two.
On the other side, Our Lady High School had some supremely talented or top-tier geniuses, usually quite the focus of college scouts, but today, they were ignored.
At 6 pm, the game began.
Tonight, DeRozan changed his tactics, primarily trying to pass the ball to Zhang Yang, letting Zhang throw more shots.
DeRozan operated this way, and Zhang San didn’t reject it; he instantly understood DeRozan’s purpose and gratefully accepted this gesture!
The strength of Our Lady High School was probably above Oakland High School and Southern California High School but below Inglewood High School and definitely not comparable to California High School. Zhang Yang launched a ferocious attack, overwhelmingly dominating the opposing team!
Not only did DeRozan keep feeding him the ball, but Tatum, Keith, and Miller also passed it to him whenever possible.
Zhang Yang tonight often caught the ball and shot directly, sprinting forward on fast breaks to shoot.
DeRozan scored 12 points with 9 assists, Tatum 5 points with 8 assists, Keith 11 points with 3 assists, Miller 8 points with 8 rebounds and 3 assists...
Zhang Yang, with 36 shots making 23, including 2 out of 5 three-pointers, along with 13 out of 17 free throws made, erupted with 61 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, gave no assists, and made 4 steals.
to 95, Compton High School defeated Our Lady High School, clinching the 2004-05 season California championship!
When the final whistle blew, Zhang Yang and his teammates clustered together in wild celebration.
Winning the championship, being number one, felt absolutely fantastic! Though it was just a high school championship, he was indeed just a high school student!
Winning a high school championship during his high school days was thrilling, no doubt about it!
Thomas, wiping tears from the corner of his eye, looked at Zhang Yang, surrounded by his teammates. He remembered the first time Zhang Yang came to Allen Sports Hall.
"At first, I thought about reclaiming the name of the Magnet Team."
"That is my dream as well."
"Then keep working hard."
That dream, even with this championship win, was still far off, but Jack had already helped him take the first step!
