Chapter 194: 111. I want to have another one-on-one with Kobe as a high schooler!

Seeing Felton competing with Paul, Nash, and Wade for the Skills Challenge championship; Matt Carroll competing with Ray Allen, Nowitzki, Terry, Arenas, and big Q for the title of Three-Point King...

Zhang Yang felt a bit envious, thinking he’d participate in all of them when he ’grew up,’ whether he won the championships or not.

Unfortunately, none of them managed to win.

Wade took the Skills Challenge championship, and Nowitzki won the three-point contest.

Both competitions were quite a spectacle to watch.

Don’t underestimate Felton; his fundamentals were solid, defeating Paul and Nash to reach the finals, but Wade was luckier in the finals and won the championship.

In the three-point contest, in terms of performance, no one was outstanding, as nobody scored 20 points in either the preliminaries or the finals. This reality only heightened the fans’ anticipation for someone to break the God of Basketball’s record.

Too bad the worst performer, big Q, still scored as high as 9 points in the preliminaries.

The God of Basketball is the God of Basketball for a reason. His records might remain unbroken, possibly even by contemporary dominant players like O’Neal and Duncan if they competed.

When it came to the dunk contest, the preliminaries weren’t even over yet, and Zhang Yang wanted to leave.

A big oversight! He should have left with his parents right after the three-point contest; he forgot that this year was the year Nate Robinson changed the rules!

Eight times! He watched Nate Robinson’s run-up to the dunk a whole eight times!

And it wasn’t over yet; in the finals, he watched Nate Robinson’s run-up another four times...

Moreover, Nate Robinson ended up winning the championship, which can only be said to be thanks to his peers setting him off.

The commentators started calling for James to participate again, and James actually went over to chat with the commentators at the commentary desk, promising ’next time for sure,’ causing a frenzy among the fans in front of their TVs.

James’ fast-break dunks during the game were fast and fierce, reaching high and slamming down with satisfying force, truly high in entertainment value, raising the audience’s expectations.

Today, Zhang Yang envied Felton, Paul, and Matt Carroll for being able to participate in the three events.

That night, back at the hotel, the trio went to Paul’s room to play CS. When Zhang Yang brought up tomorrow’s All-Star Game, it was Felton and Paul’s turn to be envious—or rather, jealous! Paul kicked Zhang Yang out of his room...

...

February 19th, Sunday, the most important day of All-Star Weekend had arrived.

Zhang Yang finished breakfast and returned to his room to take a bath. Shortly after, there was a knock at the door. Opening it, he found DeRozan, Harden, Tatum, and Little Jason at the door.

It was his first All-Star Game, and he definitely wanted to invite his old friends to watch the game together—after all, money earned was meant to be spent. He covered all costs for plane tickets, meals, accommodation, and sightseeing for them.

Initially, Zhang Yang planned to invite them for the Rookie Challenge on Friday, but yesterday—Saturday—Compton High School, Lynwood High School, and Compton High School’s Moore League second team all had games. They flew over from their respective cities last night, arriving after the events had finished, so they didn’t seek out Zhang Yang. After resting in the hotel for one night, they came straight over after breakfast.

Coach Thomas, Coach Burke and his wife, Coach Johnson and his wife, and Andy Tang and his wife also arrived in Houston. They were staying at a hotel arranged by Tellem and didn’t come early in the morning to join in the excitement with the young ones.

After not seeing each other for a long time, the friends had much to talk about.

DeRozan and Aboya joined the underselected main players of 11th and 12th grade from Compton High School to form a second team to compete in the Moore League.

The Moore League’s competitions started from September and were more frequent than the CIF’s first division. After yesterday’s game, they had played 40 matches in total. Compton High School’s second team currently had a record of 32 wins and 8 losses, ranking third in the league. However, 5 of those lost matches took place in September and October. Over the three months from November to January, they only lost 3 games, showing clear improvement.

Currently, DeRozan is averaging 29.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3.4 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game, with five games left to play. They are only two wins away from first place and still have a chance to take the top spot. Even if they don’t, there’s still the elimination round where they can fight for the true championship.

Tatum, leading Compton High School’s main team, also did fairly well. While they couldn’t compare to last season’s performance, it was still acceptable. Their record was similar to the season when Afflalo and Hip led the team, as Tatum’s teammates were much better than theirs. For example, the small forward shooter James Keith had already entered the top 100 nationally.

Tatum, being in 12th grade, improved a lot. Averaging 16 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game, his lack of scoring talent meant he hadn’t yet entered the top 100, but many colleges were eyeing him. After entering 2006, he had received calls from many college coaches. He didn’t really want to stay at a college in California and aimed for North Carolina to become a ’younger Jordan’... but felt conflicted.

Going to North Carolina would make him Zhang Yang’s junior! They used to be classmates!

Out of the three, Harden had the best performance this season.

Last season, during his 10th grade, Harden improved a lot compared to his 9th grade year but had averages of only 19 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. In his 11th grade, his abilities took a major leap. Having played 26 games, he averaged 28.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Leading the Lynwood High School team with outstanding talent, they achieved a record of 25 wins to 1 loss, making them the favorites to win the season’s championship.

The gap between All-Star talent and that of a superstar is quite significant. In 9th grade first semester, Harden could only make stand-still threes and tank-like drives. It was only during the second semester of his 9th grade that he started to seriously work on his skills. In just two years, he had caught up with DeRozan’s level of ability.
