Nightmare Assault-Chapter 477: Saving People
The call ended with a series of uncomfortable static. Then, the call ended. Jiang Cheng put down the phone and turned to look at the others.
Wang Changguo shuddered. “You’re not really thinking about going, right?” Wang Changguo’s tone was filled with disbelief. “That was a ghost! This is a trap! That Kui Yi is a ghost! He wants us to go and then kill us!” He was agitated, “How can you not realise that?”
Jiang Cheng naturally knew that, but Jiang Cheng believed the Kui Yi who called was a human. After all, the phone had been exposed. Another scam using the same method was pointless. Plus, Kui Yi’s tone and mannerisms were correct. Jiang Cheng didn’t find any loophole. When trapped, seeking aid was the most normal choice. This had nothing to do with seniority. No one wanted to die.
However, Wang Changguo got one thing right. Jiang Cheng couldn’t figure out why the ghost would let Kui Yi make this call.
After some thought, Jiang Cheng decided to save the men. He didn’t feel any responsibility towards Du Feng and Kui Yi, but it was necessary to save them. First, Kui Yi was the only experienced player in the team. He could share the pressure. Second, Jiang Cheng scanned the people around him. He could sense the fear spreading. Underneath the fear was the invading distrust. In the nightmare, the scariest thing was the loss of hope, especially for new travellers. Once they fell into despair, they would surrender their lives and even bring down others. That was the scariest.
Jiang Cheng realised the spreading element included both nightmare and fear. He couldn’t let them lose hope. If he gave up on Kui Yi and Du Feng, the others would realise that if they ran into danger next… they would also be abandoned. That would not help the morale.
“I’m going to save them.” Jiang Cheng looked at everyone. “Who is coming with me?”
The atmosphere chilled. People glanced at each other, but no one spoke. The emotions in their eyes made things worse.
Lin Wan ‘Er clapped as she smiled at the silent crowd. “So… No one is going?
“Then, you can wait here for death.” Her tone shifted. They could feel the temperature dropping. “As long as we’re here, we can’t avoid places like the stairwell and the corridor. Even if we hide inside the rooms, the ghost will come find you.” Lin Wan ‘Er glanced at the dresser. That was where the dead Lee Kaifeng was stuffed. She died when the ghost came to hunt them. Everyone knew that.
“If you don’t go now, you’ll never find the clues.” Lin Wan ‘Er stood up and walked towards Jiang Cheng. Her charm was overwhelmed by the chill. “By the way.” Lin Wan ‘Er turned around, “When we return, do not hope to get any clues from us. I…” Lin Wan ‘Er chuckled mirthlessly, “Love to lie.” Lin Wan ‘Er held Jiang Cheng’s hand and walked out. “Instead, I’ll watch you die one by one.”
The strange thing was that even the most cowardly Wang Changguo didn’t suspect the beautiful woman’s claim. If he didn’t go with them, the ending would be as she claimed. He sensed a dangerous aura from the woman. The woman was shorter than Jiang Cheng but when she held his hand, it felt like he was her child.
Just as Lin Wan ‘Er was about to step out…
“I’ll go!” “I’ll go!” “I’ll go!” “I’ll go!”
The remaining four shouted at the same time. They shared a look and felt a lingering fear. They had a feeling that if they let these two leave, they would be in big trouble.
Lin Wan ‘Er ignored them and walked out. The rest followed.
Jiang Cheng patted Lin Wan ‘Er’s hand. The woman glanced at him and raised her brow. A naughty glow danced in her eyes. The rest followed them. Irregular footsteps echoed in the corridor.
Soon, Jiang Cheng noticed something was wrong. The corridor was… too quiet. This was the second floor, not Room 604. There should be patients around, but… all the rooms were closed, and there was no one else in the corridor. It was silent.
“Move behind me.” Jiang Cheng urged. “Stand with them. No matter what, do not get separated.”
Seeing Jiang Cheng’s profile, Lin Wan ‘Er nodded. “Okay.” Eventually, the others realised something was wrong. However, they had already left… Wang Changguo glanced at the empty corridor and swallowed nervously. He didn’t dare to move back on his own.
Soon, they reached the stairwell. The sky had fully darkened. However, to their surprise, the stairwell light remained on. Even though the bulbs were old, they could see the steps. Jiang Cheng glanced down the steps. After a quick hesitation, Jiang Cheng took the first step. He trained his focus on the ceiling, the steps and even his back… He reached the next floor and didn’t encounter any problem… except the lack of people.
Everyone in this hospital appeared to have disappeared.
“Keep going.”
The group kept going up. When they reached the sixth floor, everything still seemed normal. Jiang Cheng halted. Things had become complicated. They and Du Feng’s group appeared to occupy two distinct times and spaces. They had crossed each other many times, but they couldn’t see each other.
“Would we have fallen into the trap as well?” Wang Changguo wanted to hide in the crowd. “Why is this place…”
“Shush.” Jiang Cheng warned.
Everyone froze. They looked at Jiang Cheng fearfully. The man seemed to have discovered something. Then, everyone’s expression became interesting. They could hear something.
It sounded… like footsteps!
There was more than one set of them. Everyone instantly glanced down.
The footsteps came from downstairs, from the place where they had just come from. The footsteps were approaching!
