New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 98: Sincere apology
Chapter 98: Sincere apology
Zaque’s expression was shocking, his eyes looking downwards with his shoulders slumped forward in an apologetic manner.
His red eyes were downcast, avoiding the woman’s gaze in front of him as if feeling a deep sense of remorse.
His usual look of resentment and contempt are gone, making Coco gape at him like a fish out of water, unable to believe her eyes and ears.
The expression on his face spoke volumes, his body language broadcasting his regret more clearly than words— his hands were now unclenched with his fingers fidgeting nervously on the hem of his clothing.
Somehow, for Coco’s eyes, he looked small and vulnerable, his usual arrogance replaced by a look of genuine remorse.
"I just need her for a moment." The mediator spoke quietly, his voice soft and sincere, and Coco swears that she could hear his voice shaking slightly.
What happened to the Zaque she had known?
Coco let out a huff and stood up from the chair, "Jacques? It’s okay. I don’t think he will do anything. I already dropped the poison tiger here so I’ll come back later for the money and the tiger part that Renaldo will set aside."
Jacques whisked around, a look of worry crossing her face as she watched Coco pick up the basket off the floor with ease, "Are you sure? Your wounds—"
"I’ll take care of it." Coco cut the woman off, reassuring her with a small smile, "If I didn’t come back tonight, take home the money and drop off the meat at the house as usual, okay? I think if I get too tired, I’ll go straight back to the inn."
"But.." Jacques tried to speak, but she was cut off again, by her husband this time.
"It’s alright, honey." Renaldo spoke up as he raised his butcher knife in the air and slammed it down on the dead game in front of him, "Coco will be fine. She will ask for you if she’s in a pinch. Isn’t that right, my friend?"
Renaldo didn’t have to turn around to see if Coco nodded her head, he could already tell that she did anyways.
"Mhmm." Coco agreed with Renaldo’s statement wordlessly, "I could always ask you to come over or have Mrs. Tani send someone for you to go there. So, don’t worry too much, yeah?"
Jacques doesn’t look convinced, but Coco didn’t stay there any longer to persuade her.
"Let’s go." Coco said to Zaque after opening the door fully and stepping out of the butcher shop, gripping the basket tightly in her dominant hand.
Zaque perked up when he heard Coco’s voice, the tone she used was strangely soft and gentle, as if coaxing a sulking and crying child which made him flush with color slightly.
"Take care of Jacques, Renaldo!" Coco called out to the bulky butcher through the door before she closed it.
Once she heard the door click, she released the doorknob and hummed, turning to face Zaque, "Do you mind if I have to drop this basket off to Mrs. Tani first?"
Zaque never thought that Coco would actually agree to hear his apology.
After the way he had acted towards her for the past few days, he knew that he had somehow tarnished whatever’s keeping Coco Hughes connected to him and came to terms that she will not agree to abide by his wants.
However, Coco took him by surprise.
"A-ah.. No, no.." The mediator mumbled, his eyes wide in disbelief as he shook his head, "You can do whatever you need to do, I don’t mind waiting."
"Really? That’s a relief." Coco let out a relieved sigh and turned away from him, "I thought I have to send you away if you were to say that I have to come with you before anything else."
Coco’s words have an underlying warning for the first husband, but he was so wrapped up in his imagination that it went into his ear and came out of the other.
Well, could anyone blame him? He had acted like a bad person when Coco literally told him that she was someone else who had taken over his wife’s body and refused to believe her words.
Something clicked in his brain last night when the fourth husband went home and told him about Jacques.
What’s more, Jacques immediately jumped to Coco’s defense the moment she saw him on the other side of the door, not hesitating nor thinking twice. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
If it was the actual woman he had married to pay off his parents’ debt, then the butcher and his wife wouldn’t have interacted with his wife because Coco had almost got into a fight with the man in the past.
He had heard about the commotion, but didn’t know who they were, until Quizen told him about them last night.
Remembering all the ugly emotions he felt yesterday for Coco saying something nice about Jacques, made him feel embarrassed and ashamed.
How could he think that his wife was trying to replace them by divorcing them?
Coco doesn’t have the money to do so in the first place! She’s drowning in debt and she’s working diligently to pay off all of that— so, how could he?
Sighing weakly under his breath, Zaque walked with Coco inside Magia Pierre.
"Mrs. Tani!" Coco called out for the merchant, looking around at the magic stones displayed on the shelves behind the counter, "I bought back some potatoes!"
Almost immediately, the merchant was behind the counter with a pleased smile on her lips, "Potatoes? You really know how to come in here just in time. The client I had before wanted me to bring some of the vegetables you grow, he was satisfied with the lettuce you bought back yesterday."
"Really?" Coco asked.
"Really." The merchant giggled and nodded her head, "I’ll have the potatoes sent to him as early as tomorrow."
Zaque blinked, not expecting Coco to earn money in front of him.
Has she always earned money this way?
