Chapter 72: System updated

[System update: completed!]

[Ding! Two new features have been unlocked.]

[> Exchange

> Map]

[Exchange: A conversion tool that allows the host to exchange anything of value for toras, Gamma points, or shop items. Using the Appraising Eye, the host can view the exact worth of any material.]

[Map: Allows the host to keep a record of all visited places, with the host marked as the pinpoint. Exploring new regions automatically expands the map’s coverage.]

Luke hummed and nodded as he checked the two newly unlocked features.

He was on his way back home from the well house when the system notified him.

The first feature, Exchange, was extremely valuable. He would not need to rely on Gary for every hunt anymore. There were also items Gary might refuse to buy. Being able to convert those directly into Gamma points was a huge advantage.

Still, he had a feeling the system would be stingy with its pricing.

Just to test it, he pulled out a squirrel he had hunted not long ago from his inventory and asked, ’Tell me your price.’

[Analyzing the condition...]

[Toras: 5

Gamma points: 1]

Luke’s brows rose slightly. Gary would not have offered more than two toras for the squirrel.

Damn, this was good. If he ever went broke, he could just go on a squirrel spree and easily earn over a hundred in a single day.

Nice.

The Gamma points were, as expected. It might seem low since the squirrel he held was a carnivore, its two long canines capable of tearing a man’s fingers apart. But when he considered what a single Gamma point could get him in the shop, it felt like a fair exchange.

He then opened the map, and instantly, a wide projection appeared before his face.

’So...this is my village. Hmm...no name, huh?’

[You can name the village for better recognition and quick navigation.]

Luke nodded, resting his hand on his waist. After a moment of thought, he said, ’Name it Alpha.’

He would remember it. This was the village where his journey began.

He then named Dalia’s hometown ’Beta’.

Looking at the map, he realized just how small Dalia’s birthplace was compared to his.

There were around forty houses in Village Alpha, with the largest one positioned at the northern tip.

The eastern side of the village was the least populated, as the legendary monster resided in that direction. His own house stood toward the north, with only a few houses behind it.

[The map feature takes a few minutes to detect and map an area spanning roughly thirty kilometres, with the host at its center.]

(Author’s note: Imagine Luke at the center of a circle, with four lines extending outward in the cardinal directions, each one around five kilometres, defining the detection range.)

Luke nodded. Good. This would make exploring other towns and villages much easier. However, identifying wilderness might be tricky since the map was better at defining structured areas. But what about places covered in dense greenery?

He would either need to see those areas himself, or relying blindly on the feature could become counterproductive.

[Ding! Upon leveling up, the host has received a reward.] 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Luke grinned. "Now that’s what I’ve been waiting for." He rubbed his hands together excitedly before asking, "Show me what I got?"

[Reward: One spin of Affinity Wheel.]

[Spin the wheel and receive the affinity of one magical element.]

Luke’s eyes sparkled. "Is it what I think it is?"

[Indeed, host. You can finally use sorcery with this reward.]

Luke couldn’t suppress the childlike smile forming on his lips.

He checked the spinning wheel and found nearly a hundred different affinities.

Fire, ice, storm, cloud, air, smoke, magma, thunder... and many more.

His excitement only grew. There was no such thing as a bad affinity. Every single one of them seemed useful.

He took a deep breath before finally spinning the wheel.

It spun rapidly, all the colors blending into one before gradually slowing down.

He had no particular preference, but something more aggressive, something suited for battle, would have been ideal.

Regardless of his wishes, it all came down to luck.

And soon, that luck revealed his affinity.

Sound.

Damn. Nice.

[Congratulations, host. You have unlocked your first elemental affinity.]

[Affinity: Sound]

[Grade: S]

[Spell Tiers: 5]

[Available spells: Echolocation, Concentrated Burst, Enhanced Perception.]

Curious, he tapped on the first one to learn more.

[Skill: Echolocation

Tier: 1

Usage: 10G per use

Description: Allows the host to locate anything that produces natural vibrations within a certain range, regardless of obstacles between the host and the target.]

Luke crossed his arms. "Like a bat, huh?" He could already think of several uses. In darkness, when his vision would be limited, he could rely on it to determine distance and number of targets.

There were likely many more applications, but he shifted his focus to the second skill.

[Skill: Concentrated Burst

Tier: 1

Usage: 30G per second

Description: Allows the host to concentrate and amplify sound up to 180–200 dB. The more tightly the sound is compressed, whether it’s a small cry or a snap of fingers, the more lethal the result. Every second of concentration creates 30Db of sound.]

Luke’s lips parted slightly in shock. 180 dB was enough to rupture eardrums. It was far stronger than the roar of a jet. Damn, he could kill someone with just a snap of his fingers.

But then a thought struck him. "Won’t I get hit by it as well?"

[Indeed, host. However, the more you use the skill, the more your body will adapt to high-intensity sound. Additionally, for extreme bursts, the host can purchase noise-cancellation gear from the Shop.]

Damn...if he was going to use this skill to the fullest then the gear the system mentioned would no longer be just a precaution but necessity.

But still though, he thought, it was a pretty broken ability to have.

And he could use the skill for about five seconds to create a strong enough sound to incapacitate someone easily.

This is fucking gold.
