Chapter 65 - Goodbye, Renji. Thanks, Aira

Renji sat restlessly, holding Aira's hand while continuously praying to God, pleading for her safety and recovery. He couldn't bear to lose her, as he wouldn't be able to live without Aira by his side—she meant everything to him.

"Ngh~" Aira groaned softly, snapping Renji out of his thoughts.

As the doctor who handled the C-section had said, Aira would wake up within one or two hours. Although Renji had initially been gripped by panic and fear when Aira didn't open her eyes, all those feelings vanished the moment he saw her beautiful, moon-like eyes.

A sense of happiness and relief filled his heart, causing Renji to smile as he looked at Aira. "Thank goodness you're awake, honey."

"R-Renji-kun..." Aira murmured weakly, trying to sit up but being gently restrained by Renji.

"Stay lying down. You're not allowed to get up yet," Renji said anxiously. Aira obeyed Renji's request and remained lying down.

"Where's our baby? Where is he now, darling?" Aira asked, panicked and afraid, as she didn't see their child with her.

"Calm down, honey," Renji said softly, gently stroking Aira's head to comfort her.

Renji explained calmly and gently to prevent Aira from panicking. He told her that their baby was fine and was currently in the nursery. The nurse would bring the baby over once Aira's condition stabilized, especially since their child needed milk from Aira, his mother.

The IV and blood transfusion were still attached to Aira's arm. Although she had regained consciousness and was no longer in critical condition, she wasn't fully recovered yet. She would need intensive care for the next few days in the hospital.

"Renji-kun," Aira sobbed in Renji's embrace. Now, the two of them hugged each other, releasing their emotions.

"Calm down, everything's fine, honey," Renji said, stroking Aira's back. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you both properly," he added, his voice filled with deep regret. Renji truly felt guilty and blamed himself for the tragedy that had befallen Aira.

"No. None of this is your fault, Anata," Aira said. For a moment, Aira smiled softly, and then her hands gently caressed Renji's cheeks, which were suddenly wet with tears.

"I've failed as a husband and as a father," Renji whispered, overwhelmed with guilt.

Gently stroking Renji's cheeks, Aira said, "You haven't failed, Anata. You've done everything so well and with so much responsibility. So please, don't blame yourself."

"Aira..." Renji stared blankly at her face.

"You're the best husband and father in the world. Thank you, Renji-kun," Aira said with deep gratitude.

Although Renji was very young, he had always tried his best to be a responsible husband and a good father-to-be. Not every grown man out there could do what he had done. Renji always prioritized Aira and their child above everything else, including his education. This was what made Aira happy and grateful to have a partner like Renji—something Kairo might not have been able to do even if they had ended up together. Therefore, Aira would never blame or resent Renji for what had happened today, as he had already sacrificed so much for her and their child.

Renji hugged Aira while crying with joy, feeling immensely grateful that his wife and child were safe.

Upon learning that Aira had regained consciousness, the doctor quickly arrived with a nurse to check on her condition after the surgery. Given that Aira had suffered severe bleeding during the C-section, the doctor was concerned about any post-operative complications. Fortunately, Aira's condition was stable, and nothing serious had occurred as feared. After examining her, the doctor instructed a nurse to bring Aira's baby to her, as she was now stable enough to breastfeed.

A few minutes after the doctor left, a young nurse entered Aira's recovery room, pushing a small wheeled crib containing a handsome baby boy. Discreetly, Renji glanced at the crib, checking the nameplate to see if the father's name had been changed. To his delight, the name had been updated—it no longer read Tetsuya Ishikawa but Renji Ishikawa. A wide smile spread across his face.

The nurse looked slightly confused upon seeing Renji in Aira's room. She had assumed that the well-dressed, handsome man from earlier was Aira's husband. However, rather than overthinking it, she assumed that this well-dressed high schooler was the man's younger brother, staying to look after Aira.

Aira's face lit up with happiness as she finally got to see her child after giving birth.

With great care, the nurse placed Aira's baby in her arms for his first feeding. Since this was Aira's first child, the nurse assisted her in positioning the baby correctly to ensure he wouldn't choke while nursing.

Aira gazed intently at the baby boy nestled in her arms. Renji, who had been standing a short distance away—having been shooed off by the nurse earlier—decided to walk closer, intending to sit beside Aira and get a better look at his son. However, before he could sit down, the young nurse scolded him, accusing him of being rude since Aira was breastfeeding.

Irritation flared up in Renji's heart. What was wrong with watching Aira while she nursed? He had seen her body countless times and had even touched her intimately—they were husband and wife, after all. What right did this annoying nurse have to forbid him from looking at his child?

This misunderstanding led to a small argument between Renji and the nurse, who had no idea that Renji was actually the baby's father.

"Nurse, let him sit here," Aira interjected.

"That's not allowed. He should be outside, and your husband should be the one accompanying you," the nurse huffed, glaring at Renji.

A small smile graced Aira's tired face. "He is my husband and the father of this child, so let him sit beside me," she explained, hoping to clear up the misunderstanding. Renji smirked triumphantly upon hearing Aira's words.

"What?!" The young nurse looked shocked and unconvinced.

"You must be joking, ma'am," she muttered in disbelief, looking back at Aira.

Aira chuckled and shook her head. "No, I'm not. He really is my husband, and we are truly married," she affirmed with certainty.

"You heard her. I'm her husband, which means I have every right to sit here," Renji grumbled, frustrated that he had been forbidden from sitting beside his wife. What was wrong with him seeing a part of Aira's breast?

All he wanted was to look at his child up close. Unconsciously, the nurse let out a deep sigh. "Oh my god~" she muttered in exasperation.

"In that case, I'll leave. If you need anything, press the red button beside you," she said before walking out, still feeling bewildered. She found it hard to believe that a high schooler—who was still considered a teenager—had married an adult woman and even had a child with her. Young people these days are truly bold and full of surprises.

A wide smile stretched across Renji's face as he gazed in admiration at the tiny figure cradled in Aira's arms. The two of them sat there silently, mesmerized as if hypnotized by their newborn.

After finishing his feeding, the handsome baby let out a big yawn before looking up at the two figures before him, revealing his black eyes—an inheritance from his father.

"His eyes are just like yours, Renji-kun," Aira murmured in awe.

"Of course, he is my son," Renji responded proudly.

A soft coo escaped the baby's tiny lips, bringing tears of joy to Aira's eyes. Overwhelmed, she whispered sweetly, "Thank you for coming into the world." She kissed her baby's forehead softly, with her tears flowing copiously. "Thank you for being ours as our child," she whispered again with immense tenderness.

Witnessing this touching moment, Renji couldn't hold back his emotions. He immediately wrapped his arms around Aira, his heart overflowing with happiness and gratitude, his tears falling freely. "I love you both so much. Thank you for coming into my life. And thank you for giving me the greatest gift of all, my love," he whispered.

"I love you too, darling. Thank you for being a wonderful husband and a devoted father all this time. I'm so lucky to have you as my life partner. Thank you once again," Aira said with a soft smile on her weary face.

After years of living alone in darkness, Renji never imagined that a day as joyous as this would come. He had always been seen as a ruthless, heartless demon because of his past as an assassin. But in his life, Aira was like a guiding light that illuminated his darkness and brought warmth to his once-cold heart.

No matter what happens, Renji vowed to protect both of them—against anything and anyone, even if it meant putting everything on the line, including his own life. As long as he was breathing, he would make sure they were safe, never allowing anyone to harm them—not even a little.

Silently, outside Aira's hospital room, a man stood at the doorway, listening to their conversation. The words were faint, but for him, with his sharp hearing, they were clear.

A deep sigh escaped his lips. "Haah~"

His head lowered, a bittersweet smile appearing on his face before tears silently rolled down his cheeks. He felt both happy and emotional—finally, Renji had found happiness and a family, something he had always longed for.

"Aira... thank you for giving Renji happiness and a family," he thought with a relieved heart.

Seeing Renji's happiness made it easier for him to leave. Now that Aira and their child were there for him, Renji wouldn't be alone anymore. If he were gone, Aira would still be there—to support him, to comfort him in times of sorrow.

His decision to leave was now final and unwavering. This time, he would handle everything himself—completely, down to the very root—so that no future troubles would arise. Deep down, all he ever wanted was for Renji to live peacefully and happily with his small family.

What he was about to do could be considered a sacrifice, but he didn't feel sad or resentful. Instead, he felt content—at least, in the final moments of his life, he could do something truly meaningful.

"Be happy, Renji," he whispered to himself with a wide smile.

The handsome man turned away, leaving Aira's hospital room, allowing the couple to enjoy their time together with their newborn. He wouldn't interfere anymore—no disruptions, no chaos like before.

Before leaving the hospital, he made a quick stop at Saki's room to check on her condition. Earlier, he had asked Issei to bring her here for proper medical treatment.

But he did not mean to go in or ask about her status. He stood outside the hospital room, peering through the little square window on the door. His gaze landed on the ponytailed girl, who was sleeping soundly in the arms of her boyfriend, Issei.

Unconsciously, the corners of his lips lifted into a faint smile, but his eyes remained melancholic, filled with sadness. Whether his sorrow was for himself or the blonde-haired couple, even he wasn't sure.

"Goodbye," he murmured before turning away.

Tetsuya's footsteps echoed as he walked away from the hospital, never once looking back—as if he had already accepted leaving everything behind.
