Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Love at First Sight

’Why doesn’t this surprise me...?’

Lyan thought, lying on Evelyne’s enormous bed, staring fixedly at the ceiling.

The room was lit only by a dim lamp on the nightstand. Rain battered heavily against the windows, and thunder rumbled from time to time in the distance.

And on top of him, literally, was Evelyne, her head resting on his chest, her body pressed against his as she traced slow circles with her finger over his shirt, right above his heart.

She hadn’t offered him a separate room, nor had it even been suggested.

Maren, with that kind yet calculated smile, had simply said that "Evelyne’s room was large enough for the two of them" and that she "didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable in an unfamiliar place."

A mansion that big with dozens of empty rooms, and he ended up sharing a bed with her daughter. Apparently, mother and daughter had that level of trust... or complicity.

Lyan took a deep breath, feeling Evelyne’s light weight on top of him. He didn’t dare move too much.

"You know..." Evelyne murmured suddenly, without lifting her head.

"Hm?" he replied, still staring at the ceiling.

She took a few seconds before continuing, her tone soft and sincere.

"Thank you for all this. I know I was pushy and annoying all day... but I really wanted to spend time with you."

Lyan simply listened in silence. Setting aside the strange possessive behavior she had shown earlier, he didn’t hate her.

In fact, she seemed to matter to him more than he wanted to admit. She was cute, persistent, and in moments like this, almost vulnerable.

Evelyne lifted herself slightly, propping herself up on her elbows to look down at him. Her eyes watched him with a certain intensity.

"Lyan..."

"Yeah?"

"Do you believe in love at first sight?"

There were a few seconds of silence. Lyan vaguely thought about how to answer. In the end, he decided to be honest.

"Yeah... I think I do. But I haven’t experienced it yet... or at least, I don’t think I have."

"Ah..." she murmured, lowering her head again and resting against his chest, clinging to him a little more, as if afraid he might disappear.

"And you?" Lyan asked, somewhat curious.

Evelyne smiled against his shirt.

"Yes. I have. But that cute boy is a bit oblivious."

Lyan laughed internally; she was clearly talking about him. If that was the reason behind her intense behavior, then "love at first sight" made some sense.

Evelyne seemed like the kind of person who doesn’t easily let go of what she loves, and he didn’t know if that was good or... very good. He joked internally.

A few seconds later, Lyan remembered something that had been on his mind since the infirmary. He placed his left hand on her shoulder and gave her a few gentle pats.

"Can I ask you something?" he said.

Evelyne looked up and smiled at him. "Of course."

Lyan decided to be direct.

"Why did you ask me in the infirmary if I had been with another woman besides you... or the other four? Why did you include the other four? If you feel something so strong for me... why ’offer’ the possibility of me being with them?"

Evelyne smiled and remained silent for a moment, organizing her thoughts. Then she answered calmly.

"I’ve known them since we were little. The five of us made a promise that might sound silly now, but at the time it felt very important. We said that if any of us found a boy we truly loved, we would share him no matter what. No jealousy between us."

She paused and looked him in the eyes. "Silly, don’t you think?"

Lyan didn’t respond and simply watched her.

Evelyne continued speaking, lowering her voice more and more.

"Sometimes I feel like my life is just a simple game... where I can’t express myself as much as I’d like. It’s strange. I don’t even know how to explain it properly."

Lyan glanced at her; what she said was strange, as if she were aware she was inside something artificial. But he decided not to dwell on it and let it go; in the end, it could just be the way she expressed herself.

Evelyne moved closer to his face, catching Lyan’s confused gaze. Her lips were only a few centimeters from his.

"Can I...?" she asked in a whisper.

"What?" Lyan asked, his heart beginning to beat faster.

She didn’t answer with words. She interrupted him by leaning in and placing a gentle kiss on his lips.

It was clumsy, nervous, but full of genuine and deep love. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Evelyne had her eyes closed, enjoying the moment with her entire being.

Lyan remained still at first, looking at her without returning the kiss, feeling how she trembled slightly against him, internally worried by his lack of response.

"..."

Without saying anything else, Lyan lifted his arms and pulled her tightly against his body.

Returning the kiss, closing his eyes, and letting his lips move softly against hers.

The kiss became deeper and warmer. Evelyne let out a small sound of relief and happiness, clutching his shirt as if she never wanted to let go.

The rain kept falling heavily outside, accompanying the moment. Inside the room, the only sounds were their uneven breathing and the rapid beating of their hearts.

When they parted slightly, Evelyne rested her forehead against Lyan’s, a small, satisfied smile on her lips.

Her eyes shone with a mixture of shyness and triumph.

Lyan, still holding her, thought that maybe this wasn’t so bad after all, even though he knew he was getting deeper and deeper into something he didn’t fully understand.

The night had only just begun, and the Montclair mansion held many more secrets than it seemed.
