Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Montclair Mansion

’I want to go home...’

Lyan thought as he walked through the academy’s hallways.

He was carrying Evelyne in his arms, passing through corridors filled with students who watched the scene with various expressions.

Some with curiosity, others with envy, and a few with mocking smiles.

Lyan tried to ignore them and get out of the school as quickly as possible.

But Evelyne wasn’t helping.

She had her arms around his neck, her breath constantly brushing warmly against his neck.

Making each step feel longer than necessary.

As Lyan walked briskly, he caught sight of someone he knew well out of the corner of his eye.

When he turned his head, it was Reid.

He had a look of absolute shock and an expression that clearly said "liar" in every feature of his face.

Since Lyan had told him he had left school because he was sick, and asked if he could take his backpack and return it tomorrow.

’Shit.’

He thought as he realized he’d been found out.

Reid pointed at him from the other side of the hallway, his mouth exaggeratedly open as he shook his head.

Lyan barely held his gaze for a second before looking forward again, quickening his pace, almost running toward the exit.

He heard Reid’s laughter behind him, but he didn’t stop.

Once they were a few streets away from the school, Lyan finally exhaled in relief.

"Where is your house?" he asked, glancing at Evelyne.

She lifted her head slightly from his chest.

"Keep going straight for about four blocks," she said calmly. "Then turn right at the second corner. Walk two more blocks and you’ll see a large black iron gate. That’s my house."

Lyan nodded.

He was internally grateful that she lived nearby.

It wasn’t because it was hard to keep carrying her, but because people on the street were also turning to look at them.

Many of them took the scene as something "romantic" between couples.

A couple of older women even smiled when they saw them pass by.

Lyan could only look forward with a slightly red face.

As he walked, Evelyne broke the silence.

"This happened because you got close to another woman who wasn’t me or the other four."

Her voice came out calm, but there was an edge to it.

Lyan didn’t look at her; instead, a bit braver, or simply tired of that attitude, he responded bluntly.

"All of this over something stupid..."

Silence.

A heavy silence that lasted several seconds.

Then Evelyne spoke again, her tone colder than before.

"Was that girl you were with on the school rooftop with Reid the one you were with?"

She paused.

"Because you smell like her."

Lyan stopped dead in his tracks, staring at her in shock.

"How do you know that...?" he muttered.

But as soon as he said it, he thought the question was stupid.

’Most likely several students saw me heading toward the only entrance to the rooftops...’

He thought logically.

And her knowing wasn’t a mystery if someone had told her.

Evelyne confirmed that, telling him some friends had mentioned they saw him...

"Someone saw you go up," she said.

Then she looked directly into his eyes. "Did you do anything?"

Her voice was cold and serious.

Lyan swallowed and resumed walking, trying to stay calm.

"No," he replied.

Evelyne narrowed her eyes.

"Really? Or are you lying to me? Because if that’s the case, wha—"

Lyan interrupted her. "Last night I made some food at my apartment with Reid and Solène," he said in a serious tone. "The three of us spent time together. Talking, eating, and playing stupid games, that’s all. That’s why I might have her scent on me."

A lie crafted in that very moment.

He said it as seriously as he could, so there would be no doubt or fear in his voice.

Evelyne fell silent, as if she were thinking about whether he was telling the truth or not.

Processing every word.

Lyan kept walking without looking away from the front, hoping that would be enough.

Finally, Evelyne spoke.

"Alright."

Then she leaned more against his chest, sinking slightly into him.

"I was afraid you would leave me for another woman..." she murmured softly.

"..."

Lyan simply listened. He hadn’t had many interactions with her for her to fall in love with him so quickly.

’It must be one of those love-at-first-sight cases.’

He thought as he kept walking.

’I’d better get myself together and focus on the original plot...’ he told himself mentally.

’I’ll figure out what to do later... I’ll play along a bit more and then go rest.’

As he walked along the sidewalk of a huge house, Evelyne lifted her head.

"We’re here."

At that, Lyan blinked. "Yeah? Where?"

Evelyne pointed ahead with her gaze. Lyan followed the direction and was left completely dumbfounded.

In front of him stood a massive mansion surrounded by a black iron fence with golden details.

The front garden was enormous, with perfectly trimmed grass and a few decorative trees.

The house itself had three floors, with large windows and a classical architecture that at first glance looked luxurious and expensive.

’It’s fucking huge...’

He thought, unable to look away.

Evelyne pressed a button on a small remote she pulled from her pocket, and the gate opened automatically.

Lyan walked in slowly, still processing the size of the property.

When they reached the main entrance, a maid was already waiting for them with a concerned expression.

She was a middle-aged woman with an impeccable uniform.

"Miss Evelyne, are you alright?" she asked, approaching immediately.

"I’m fine," Evelyne replied with a calm smile. "I just twisted my ankle."

The maid looked at Lyan with some curiosity, but didn’t say anything about it.

"Allow me to take you to your room, miss."

Evelyne shook her head.

"That won’t be necessary. Lyan will take me."

The maid blinked, somewhat surprised, but nodded without asking further questions.

Lyan cursed internally.

’Of course she wasn’t going to let me go that easily...’

He thought as he entered the house following Evelyne’s directions.

The interior was just as impressive as the exterior.

Marble floors, chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, paintings on the walls that were probably worth more than his entire real-life apartment.

He went up the stairs carefully, carrying Evelyne to the second floor.

When they reached her room, the maid opened the door for them to enter.

Lyan gently set her down on the bed, which was huge and had perfectly arranged white sheets.

Before he could pull away, Evelyne grabbed his hand.

"Wait," she said, looking at him with a small smile.

Lyan remained standing in front of her, feeling the maid watching them from the doorway.

She cleared her throat lightly.

"Do you need anything, miss?"

Evelyne turned to her. "Where is my mother?"

The maid smiled. "She’s in the dining room. If you wish to have tea with her, she would be delighted."

Evelyne nodded.

"I’ll go in a few minutes with Lyan."

The maid gave a small bow and left, closing the door behind her.

Leaving them alone.

Lyan cursed internally over all of this.
