Chapter 106: The Auction (II)

Bettie observed the proceedings as each item came and went. She noticed something that was off.

Most people still held onto their pouches of money and not alot had spent significant amounts so far.

That meant they were waiting.

Waiting for the four special items that hadn’t been revealed yet.

Bettie’s hands tightened around her own pouch as she glanced down at her pouch, hoping it would be enough when the time came.

—-

After a while longer, all fourteen items from the official list had been auctioned off successfully.

Most of them had gone to Belsorth students who either genuinely wanted those specific items or felt they didn’t have enough money left to compete for whatever special surprises were coming next.

Out of those fourteen items sold so far, only three had been won by Mallory High students.

Hana began, "Alright everyone! I can feel it in the air... this is what you’ve all been waiting for!"

She turned toward Kieran with an exaggerated flourish of her hand.

"Mr. Kieran? If you would be so kind as to bring out our special items?"

Kieran nodded and reached down into the box.

Most of the students seemed to lean forward collectively, craning their necks to get a better look at what was about to be revealed.

But then Hana raised one hand to quiet the murmuring crowd, and for a second it looked like her expression became serious.

"Before we proceed," she began, "I’d like to remind all of you that what we’re doing here today is only a mock practice of the real thing."

"Out in the actual world, prices for items like these are significantly higher than what you’ll see here. Even for things you might think are too pricy right now."

She paused for emphasis.

"Items at guild auctions or private sales regularly go for anywhere between one thousand, twenty thousand, fifty thousand, sometimes even a hundred thousand gold grits or more."

Most of the students reacted with visible shock on their faces. A few whispered to each other in disbelief.

But a handful of certain students didn’t react at all. They already knew this as their families dealt in these kinds of transactions regularly.

Hana continued. "I also want to mention that these four special items may not be suitable for every class of person here. Unfortunately, it’s all we could get our hands on for this event."

She smiled apologetically.

"But with that said, let’s begin."

Then she turned toward Kieran, who lifted out the first item.

It was a staff, which she held it up high so everyone could see it clearly.

The staff had a short handle with a blue crystalline orb at the top, encased within crown-like metal frame with golden lower rims.

"This staff," Hana announced "is called the Wintercrown Staff, and it was donated to us by the number one guild in the country, Black Hearts!"

"The Wintercrown Staff is primarily suited for Caster-class awakened," Hana explained. "Within this staff is stored a Tier 4 level ice spell that shoots multiple ice shards at your target."

She rotated the staff slowly so everyone could admire its craftsmanship. "Starting bid is ten gold grits"

Immediately, voices called out from different corners of the canopy.

"11!"

"12!"

"14!"

"18!"

These were mostly casters who didn’t have access to spells relating to the ice element and saw this as an opportunity to expand their arsenal.

Ethan considered it for a moment as well.

But then he decided it wasn’t worth bidding on.

He could just as easily learn an ice spell directly from Isabella, who knew spells from seven different elements. Plus, the staff felt too restrictive when its only function was casting one specific spell.

However, right then, he heard Bettie’s voice beside him.

"Twenty gold!"

Ethan turned toward her for a second but didn’t say anything. She was also staring directly at Miss Hana with focused determination.

To Bettie, this was a Tier 4 spell, which wasn’t bad at all since that was currently her tier limit as a B-class Caster.

And based on her available funds, this seemed like something she could realistically afford to bid on.

She would at least walk away with one thing today.

"I hear twenty!" Hana called out. "Do I hear twenty-five?"

"Thirty!" someone shouted from the back rows.

"Thirty-five!" another voice countered almost immediately after.

The bidding continued climbing steadily upward as more casters threw their hats into the ring.

"Forty!"

"Forty-five!"

Hana’s gaze swept across the crowd as she called out each new bid with enthusiasm.

"Going once at forty-five... going twice..."

Right then, a random Belsorth student’s voice cut through clearly:

"Fifty gold grits!"

Hana pointed toward him immediately.

"I hear fifty! Do I hear fifty-five?"

There was silence and no one else raised their hand or called out another bid.

Hana moved her gaze through the crowd one last time before raising her hand and bringing it down onto the table with a smack.

"Going once... going twice... sold to bidder from Belsorth for fifty gold grits!"

The Belsorth caster who won grinned widely as Kieran made a note on his clipboard and walked over to collect payment in exchange for handing over the Wintercrown Staff.

Bettie’s shoulders slumped as she stared at the pouch on her lap. Even her entire savings hadn’t been enough. But she tried to hold onto hope, knowing there were still three more items left.

However, she wasn’t fortunate with the next two items either.

The second was the Orb of Neron, donated by the Reapers Guild. It served as an external mana source that absorbed ambient mana when drained, taking ten hours to fully recharge.

At full power, it could cast a Tier 5 spell three times, Tier 4 five times, Tier 3 nine times, and lower-tier spells over ten times each. An SR-grade item.

The first bid jumped straight to thirty gold, even though its starting bid was fifteen. But the bidding war eventually ended when Anna, Belsorth’s class president, called out two hundred sixty gold grits and won.

The third item was a leather pouch containing six Talismans of Stamina Recovery. Each talisman restored twenty percent of the user’s stamina, allowing for prolonged physical activity before burning away after use.

It wasn’t of much use to Bettie as a caster. But for Percival, who had been waiting for something he could actually use, it was perfect.

He placed a bid and secured it with 90 gold grits after a brief competition with the other students.

Aside from Bettie, the Mallory High students didn’t look pleased about any of this. They had barely won anything today, with the Belsorth students taking almost everything.

The grumbling was obvious, and there was irritation on their faces. Hana gave a moment for everyone to settle.

Although deep down, she didn’t like it either, but as their teacher and the auctioneer, she had to keep her composure.

"And now... for the final item."
