My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System-Chapter 77: Dangerous Territory
[DAY 1 – DAWN – DESERT BORDER]
The sun emerged over the horizon—brutal, relentless.
The temperature rose from 15 degrees at night to 35 in a matter of hours.
The team had been walking all night.
Alex, Raven, Emily, Grim (small form in a backpack), and now Kira.
Five against the world.
"We need to rest," Emily said, wiping sweat. "We’ve been walking for eight hours straight."
Alex checked the map Matthias had given them—ironic to use it now.
"There’s a rock formation two kilometers away. Shade. We can rest there for a few hours."
"And Matthias?" asked Raven.
Kira activated her tracking skill—her eyes glowing amber momentarily.
[Skill: Predator’s Sense – Active]
"He’s... six kilometers behind. Moving slowly. His wounds are slowing him down."
"But not stopping him," Alex observed.
"No. He’s persistent."
They continued toward the rocks.
Arrived twenty minutes later at a natural formation creating wide shade.
The temperature under the rocks: still 30 degrees, but better than 35 under direct sun.
They collapsed—exhausted.
Emily distributed water—rationed.
Each received half a liter.
"This has to last," she warned. "Until we reach the mountains. Three more days of desert."
Alex drank slowly—savoring every drop.
[Debuff: Exhaustion – REMOVED] (2 hours elapsed)
Immediate relief.
His body still ached, but functional.
"We rest for two hours," Alex decided. "Then we keep moving. We want to put as much distance as possible between us and Matthias."
Everyone nodded.
They lay down in the shade.
Trying to sleep.
Alex closed his eyes—
[SYSTEM – ALERT]
[DANGER DETECTED!]
[CREATURE APPROACHING – HIGH LEVEL]
[DISTANCE: 500 METERS AND CLOSING]
Alex’s eyes snapped open.
"Up. Now."
Everyone stood—weapons materializing.
"What is it?" Raven whispered.
Alex scanned the horizon.
He saw movement.
Something large sliding across the sand.
Leaving a sinuous trail.
"Shit," Kira muttered, recognizing it. "Sand Worm."
[Desert Wyrm – Level 95]
[HP: 48,000/48,000]
The creature emerged.
Massive. Ten meters long. Three meters in diameter.
A segmented body covered in chitinous plates.
A circular mouth filled with rings of rotating teeth.
No eyes—it navigated by vibration.
And it had detected their footsteps.
"SCATTER!" Alex shouted.
The team split—five different directions.
The Wyrm hesitated—multiple targets confusing it.
Then it chose.
It lunged toward Emily—the closest.
"EMILY!" Alex shouted.
She raised [Holy Barrier] —
The Wyrm struck.
CRASH.
The barrier held—but cracks appeared immediately.
[Holy Barrier: 100% → 65%]
The creature recoiled—preparing for a second attack.
Alex didn’t give it the chance.
[Shadow Step] —he appeared on the Wyrm’s back.
His sword stabbing—seeking the gap between plates.
STAB.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 48,000 → 46,800/48,000]
Minimal damage—the natural armor was too thick.
The Wyrm thrashed violently.
Alex was nearly thrown—he grabbed a plate with his free hand.
Holding on.
"Raven! Weak point!" he shouted.
Raven was already moving.
She summoned twenty skeletons—level 40.
She sent them toward the Wyrm’s head—distracting it.
Meanwhile, she circled toward its tail.
Where the plates were thinner.
Scythe cutting.
SLASH.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 46,800 → 44,200/48,000]
Better damage—but still insufficient.
The Wyrm screeched—a sound like scraping metal.
It dove into the sand.
Disappearing completely.
"Where is it?" Emily shouted.
"Below!" Kira replied. "Move! Don’t stay still!"
Everyone began running—erratic patterns.
The sand exploded beneath Raven.
The Wyrm emerging directly underneath her.
Jaws open—teeth spinning.
Raven tried to dodge—
Too slow.
Then—
"NO!"
Grim appeared.
Awakened form activated.
He intercepted the Wyrm.
Scythe blocking the jaws.
CLANG.
Massive force—Grim being pushed back.
But he held.
"Master! Now!"
Alex understood.
He ran—[Battle Flow] activating.
Movements flowing naturally.
He leaped onto Grim.
Used his shoulder as a platform.
Launched himself toward the Wyrm’s open mouth.
Sword pointed forward.
[Blood Weapon] + [Shadow Strike] combined.
Dark energy wrapping around the blade.
STAB.
The sword penetrated deep—into the soft interior.
Where there were no plates.
[CRITICAL HIT!]
[Desert Wyrm HP: 44,200 → 38,600/48,000]
The Wyrm convulsed—absolute agony.
It shook its head violently.
Alex ripped his sword free—leaped back.
Landed beside Grim.
"Good. Work. Master," Grim said.
"You too."
The Wyrm sank into the sand again.
But this time—it left a trail of dark blood.
Wounded.
Dangerous.
"Don’t let up!" Raven ordered.
She summoned thirty more skeletons—fifty total.
She spread them in a wide circle.
When the Wyrm emerged, they’d be ready.
Kira drew her bow—she had been charging it.
An arrow with a crystalline tip—penetration enchantment.
She waited.
Watching the sand.
Looking for the pattern.
There—a slight ripple.
Movement beneath the surface.
"Nine o’clock," she whispered.
Everyone looked.
The sand began to bulge.
The Wyrm preparing to emerge.
"Now!" Kira shouted.
She fired.
[Piercing Shot]
The arrow flew—a perfect trajectory.
It struck just as the Wyrm emerged.
THUNK.
It pierced its vestigial eye—a hidden sensory organ apparently.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 38,600 → 35,100/48,000]
The Wyrm screeched—disoriented.
Fifty skeletons attacked.
Striking, cutting, stabbing.
Individual damage minimal.
But cumulative.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 35,100 → 32,800/48,000]
Emily channeled her energy.
"STARFALL!"
Projectiles of light rained down.
Striking plates—
Some bouncing off.
Others penetrating the weakened joints.
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 32,800 → 30,200/48,000]
The Wyrm was being overwhelmed.
Too many enemies. Too many angles.
It did what cornered creatures do.
A desperate counterattack.
Its body began to glow—orange like embers.
"It’s overheating!" Kira shouted. "Get back!"
Everyone retreated—
Too late.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SAND BURST]
The Wyrm thrashed violently.
The sand around it exploded—
Like a massive grenade.
Thousands of hardened sand fragments shot in all directions.
BOOM.
Alex raised his arms—protecting his face.
Sand hitting like bullets.
[Alex HP: 620/1,050 → 480/1,050]
Raven created a barrier with skeletons—partial absorption.
[Raven HP: 640/920 → 520/920]
Emily had [Holy Barrier] —it held as best it could.
[Emily HP: 520/850 → 450/850]
Kira dove behind a rock—avoided the worst.
[Kira HP: 1,800/2,600 → 1,600/2,600]
Grim—in Awakened form with his bone armor—tanked it directly.
[Grim HP: 2,400/2,400 → 1,800/2,400] 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
When the dust settled—
The Wyrm was preparing to flee.
Turning toward the sand—ready to dive.
Escape.
"Don’t let it go!" Alex shouted.
But the Wyrm was fast—
Almost completely buried—
Then—
"MY. TURN!"
Grim roared.
Something changed.
His Awakened form—glowing more intensely.
Bone armor expanding.
His height increasing—2.5m → 3 meters.
His scythe transforming—its blade doubling in size.
[GRIM – SKILL UNLOCKED: REAPER’S WRATH]
[EFFECT: +100% Damage for 30 seconds]
[COST: 10% HP per second]
"What—?" Alex began.
Grim launched himself.
At an impossible speed for his size.
He reached the Wyrm before it could fully sink.
His scythe descending.
Not a normal cut.
An execution.
[DEATH’S HARVEST – ENHANCED]
The blade cut—
Through the plates.
Through the flesh.
Through the bone.
Separating the Wyrm’s head from its body.
SLICE.
Clean. Perfect. Absolute.
[Desert Wyrm HP: 30,200 → 0/48,000]
[DESERT WYRM DEFEATED!]
The massive body collapsed.
Dark blood pooling.
Grim stood over the corpse.
His scythe glowing.
An impossibly intimidating form.
Then—the transformation reversed.
Returning to 2.5 meters.
[Reaper’s Wrath – DEACTIVATED]
[Grim HP: 1,800/2,400 → 1,500/2,400] (skill cost)
Everyone stared—astonished.
"Grim," Alex said slowly. "What was that?"
"New. Skill," Grim replied simply. "Unlocked. At. 62%. Souls."
"Reaper’s. Wrath. I. Sacrifice. HP. For. Massive. Power."
"That was... incredible," Raven murmured.
"Thanks."
Grim began the absorption process.
His hand touching the Wyrm’s corpse.
Green light emanating—its soul being drained.
[GRIM – ABSORPTION COMPLETED]
[Souls Gained: +18.6]
[Total: 626.7 → 645.3/1,000 (64.53%)]
[SYSTEM – NOTIFICATION]
[EXP SHARED]
[ALEX – LEVEL UP!]
[Level 41 → Level 42]
[HP: 480/1,050 → 480/1,080]
[MP: 505 → 520]
[Stats Increased:]
- Strength: 112 → 116
- Agility: 119 → 123
- Intelligence: 75 → 77
A small relief—but welcome.
Emily began healing everyone.
[Purification] on each.
[Alex HP: 480 → 680/1,080]
[Raven HP: 520 → 720/920]
[Emily HP: 450 → 650/850] (healed herself)
[Kira HP: 1,600 → 1,900/2,600]
[Grim HP: 1,500 → 1,800/2,400]
"Well," Emily gasped, exhausted. "That used a lot of mana."
[Emily MP: 150 → 20/850]
"Rest," said Alex. "You did well."
They sat down—processing the battle.
The first serious encounter in dangerous territory.
And they had won.
But at a high cost.
"If every monster is level 90+," Raven observed, "and every fight is that intense..."
"We won’t survive two weeks," Alex finished.
Grim silence.
Then Kira spoke.
"There’s a way to avoid some encounters."
"How?"
"Less traveled routes. Zones the territorial monsters avoid because there are bigger predators." She paused. "More dangerous if we run into the predators. But fewer total encounters."
Alex considered.
Option 1: Direct route—many encounters, level 90-100.
Option 2: Indirect route—fewer encounters, but level 110-130 if any.
"What do you think?" he asked Raven.
"That both options suck, but... I’d rather have a few hard fights than many medium ones. We conserve resources."
"Emily?"
"Agreed. My mana is limited. I can’t heal after every battle."
"Grim?"
"Master. Decides. I. Follow."
Alex looked north—mountains visible in the distance.
Two weeks.
With Matthias hunting.
"Indirect route," he decided. "Kira, guide us."
She nodded. "Follow me. And stay alert. If we find something big... it’ll be very big."
---
[6 HOURS LATER – AFTERNOON]
They had been walking in silence.
Avoiding open areas.
Using rock formations as cover.
So far—no encounters.
Then—Kira raised her hand.
Stop.
Everyone froze.
"What?" Alex whispered.
"Tracks. Fresh." She pointed at the sand.
Massive impressions—each the size of a shield.
"What made them?" asked Raven.
Kira examined them. "Sand Scorpion. Level... 115, probably."
"Shit."
"Yeah."
"Where is it now?"
"I don’t know. But the tracks lead..." She followed the trail. "...toward that canyon."
She pointed at a rock formation—a narrow canyon cutting through the hills.
"We need to go through there," Kira said. "It’s the only way to the indirect route."
"And if the scorpion is inside?"
"Then we fight."
Alex checked the team.
Everyone still wounded. Emily with almost no mana.
Not ideal conditions.
But they had no choice.
"Let’s go. Absolute silence. If it’s there, maybe it won’t notice us."
They entered the canyon.
Rock walls rising twenty meters on each side.
A narrow path—barely three meters wide.
Perfect for an ambush.
They advanced slowly.
Each step careful.
No sound.
They reached the middle of the canyon—
CLICK.
The sound of chitin against stone.
Everyone froze.
They looked up—
Sand Scorpion.
Enormous. Five meters long. Claws the size of a person.
A tail with a stinger dripping bright green venom.
Clinging to the canyon wall.
Directly above.
[Sand Scorpion – Level 118]
[HP: 68,000/68,000]
The scorpion’s compound eyes looked down.
Detecting them.
"Run," Alex whispered.
"What?" asked Emily.
"RUN!"
The scorpion released the wall.
Falling directly toward them.
Everyone scattered, sprinting toward the canyon exit.
CRASH.
The scorpion landed, the impact shaking the ground.
It immediately pursued them with surprising speed.
Claws snapping.
Almost catching Kira—
She dove aside.
The claw struck the rock where she had been.
CRACK.
Stone shattered.
"We can’t fight this!" Raven shouted.
"I know!" Alex replied. "Just keep running!"
They exited the canyon—
But the scorpion followed.
Not territorial like the Wyrm.
This was an active predator.
Hunting.
"We need to slow it down!" Alex shouted.
"How?!" Emily responded.
Alex thought quickly.
Level 118. HP 68,000. Probably immune to most normal attacks.
But maybe...
"Grim! Use Reaper’s Wrath! Cut off a claw!"
"Master! That. Will. Drain. My. HP!"
"I know! But we need to slow it down!"
"...Understood."
Grim activated the skill.
Form expanding—3 meters.
Scythe transforming.
[Reaper’s Wrath – ACTIVATED]
He spun—facing the scorpion.
The creature attacked with its right claw closing in.
Grim blocked it with his scythe—
Then pushed.
Redirecting the claw to the side.
Exposing the joint.
SLASH.
The scythe cut through.
Through the chitin.
Through the muscle.
Severing the claw from the body.
[Sand Scorpion HP: 68,000 → 61,500/68,000]
The scorpion screeched—
Reeled back—
Wounded but not defeated.
[Grim HP: 1,800/2,400 → 1,200/2,400]
"Enough!" Alex shouted. "Grim, deactivate! Everyone run!"
They kept running.
The scorpion pursued—
But slower now.
Only one functional claw.
Eventually—it stopped.
Deciding it wasn’t worth the energy.
It returned to the canyon.
The team didn’t stop until they were two kilometers away.
They collapsed—gasping.
"Level 118," Raven panted. "We can’t fight that."
"Not directly," Alex agreed. "But we managed to escape."
"Barely."
"Barely is enough."
They lay in silence, catching their breath.
Then Emily spoke.
"How many more encounters like this?"
Kira checked the map.
"Two more days of desert. Then mountain territory. Different kind of monsters."
"Better or worse?"
"Depends. Fewer giant scorpions. More ice wyverns."
"Wonderful."
The sun began to set.
Temperature dropping.
"We camp here tonight," Alex decided. "Watch shifts. Two hours each."
They set up a minimal camp.
No fire—too visible.
Cold food. Rationed water.
Alex took the first watch.
Sitting on a high rock.
Scanning the horizon.
Southward—where they had come from.
Looking for any sign of Matthias.
He saw nothing.
But he knew he was out there.
Somewhere.
Closing in.
Two weeks, he thought. We just need to survive two weeks.
