Chapter 191: Chapter 128: Probing Meng Qi, the Brutal Teng Liang

Bu Siqi’s eyelid twitched frantically. He swallowed hard. "This isn’t a good idea."

"Bu Siqi..." Teng Liang suddenly turned to Bu Siqi, his gaze deep and unsettling.

A chill ran down Bu Siqi’s spine. He immediately activated his wristband and said, "I’ll contact him right now. Right now."

A short while later, Teng Liang walked out and looked toward the crowd.

A figure within the crowd promptly vanished.

"I heard Ming Lin made the Inspector Guard retreat ten meters this morning, then just stood by and watched them make their arrest."

"Yeah, and Wei Yufan didn’t even have to say a word. He just showed up, and the Inspector Guard backed off on their own."

"...And even Su Chen, who just became a Core Seed this year, hasn’t lost any face in the few minor scuffles he’s been in."

"Yeah, we’re the only ones making a fool of ourselves every day."

The Judges, having reformed their ranks, spoke loudly with their heads hung low, making no effort to hide their conversation from Meng Qi, who was standing nearby.

Meng Qi wasn’t annoyed. He just gave an awkward smile, feeling no turmoil inside. To him, their chatter was nothing more than the chirping of ants—not worth getting angry about.

Meng Qi sighed to himself. ’A pity. It was all a bit too rushed. I never thought Chong Jingtian would suddenly summon everyone, exposing Zhu Xuan’s death. I would have been safer otherwise. And that Su Chen... his wariness toward Zhu Xuan was just too strong, making him impossible to approach.’

’This way, I have no good opportunity to get close to him.’

His original plan was to frame Su Chen for Zhu Xuan’s death. Then, he could publicly declare his belief in Su Chen’s innocence and defend him. Helping someone in their hour of need was a perfect way to earn their trust.

Then he would have a subordinate take the fall, clearing Su Chen of all suspicion. A happy ending for everyone.

But he couldn’t have predicted how things would unfold. Zhu Xuan couldn’t just drop dead in Su Chen’s home. Using indirect means would be far less effective and would only make Su Chen more suspicious.

’I’ll have to find another way. But Su Chen... why is Black Tuo so focused on him?’ He was dying of curiosity and wanted to figure it out as soon as possible. ’If I’d known about Su Chen from the start, I never would have bothered with Zhu Xuan...’

Just as he was scheming, his expression suddenly changed. A gray-yellow storm had kicked up out of nowhere, churning sand and dust into the sky.

The sand particles spun and ground together at incredible speeds, emitting a high-pitched shriek that set one’s teeth on edge as they converged toward the center. The sight was terrifying!

"Ambush!! Protect Meng Qi!"

A Judge beside him roared. They quickly formed a defensive formation in front of Meng Qi, their auras flaring as they moved with disciplined precision.

But it was useless. Scores of Judges were swept into the storm, vanishing without a trace.

Meng Qi stood in the center, looking as though he were scared stiff, his expression vacant. Inwardly, however, he was surprised. ’Someone’s actually trying to kill me? Whose men are they?’

Only the Faceless Ghost’s Followers knew about his infiltration; the other Deceitful God’s Followers were completely in the dark. If someone were to truly target him, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.

’Hmm, I wonder who’s protecting me?’ he mused, a strange feeling welling up inside him. ’This feeling of being protected... it’s not bad at all.’

However, even as the foul-smelling storm closed in, there was still no sign of movement from his supposed protectors. He was sent flying straight into the ruins of the underground black market.

The buildings here were crude. Dust filled the air, and a searing pain spread across his chest. Meng Qi was completely bewildered. ’Where are my protectors?’

’Is no one actually protecting me?’ 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

BANG!

A hulking figure landed. It stood a full three meters tall, like a small giant, and radiated a nauseating, putrid stench.

’A Rot Blood Giant? Aren’t they Believers of the Dark Plague? They’re supposed to be active in Yuan Capital. What are they doing here in Ying Feng?’ Meng Qi shrank back, his mind racing.

"Help! Help!" he shrieked.

He couldn’t believe it. There was really no one protecting him? But he was a Core Seed!

"A Core Seed from Ying Feng. What a rare opportunity," the Rot Blood Giant said as it advanced. The muscles all over its body were rotting, giving off a sickening, putrid odor.

"Cough, cough..." Meng Qi was both furious and alarmed. ’The Judicial Court really didn’t send anyone to protect me? What are they thinking?’

"Die!" The Rot Blood Giant lifted its massive foot. The sight of the white worms wriggling on its sole made Meng Qi want to retch.

’He had spent a fortune carefully modifying this body to evade the Judicial Court’s rigorous screenings. It was a near-perfect disguise.’

’Being stomped to death by a Rot Blood Giant would be an absolute waste.’

Just as the white worms were about to touch his cheek, there was still no movement from his surroundings.

Meng Qi finally snapped. His eyes were veiled in a hazy, grayish-white light as he roared, "Stop!"

His voice echoed, layered and vast, seeming to come from a great distance.

"You..." The Rot Blood Giant froze. It watched as Meng Qi flew out from under its foot and hovered in midair. A hazy divinity and an imposing majesty radiated from him as he commanded:

"Get out!"

The Rot Blood Giant was not one of the Faceless Ghost Followers, so Meng Qi couldn’t command it directly, but this was enough to prove he wasn’t an enemy of the Deceitful God.

However, a nasty grin spread across the Rot Blood Giant’s face. Its already massive body swelled again, the rotting flesh replaced by bronze-colored skin. A wild, primal aura emanated from its new form.

"So, there really is something wrong with you!"

"Ancient Spirit Giant? Teng Liang!" Meng Qi’s expression was one of pure shock.

’He knew this was bad. The guy had clearly come to test him.’

’Where did I slip up? Why would the Judicial Court suddenly decide to test me?’

He had no time to think. A fist the size of a clay pot was already rushing toward him.

"Teng Liang, I’ll remember this!" Meng Qi’s eyes flashed with malice. Then, his eyes rolled into the back of his head, and his body went limp, falling straight down.

Suddenly, Teng Liang’s colossal fist stopped just inches from Meng Qi’s face. The gale it generated buffeted the area, sending Meng Qi’s slight frame spinning through the air. He drifted down and landed without a sound, completely still.

"Dead?" The Ancient Spirit Giant’s massive eyes stared at the body on the ground.

...

"You all heard him. You’ll get what you’re owed. Go on down and finish up," Su Chen said, calling the Judges back from outside the hall. He added a reminder,

"This place is more than it seems. Be careful. If you find anything strange, don’t act on your own. Report it first."

"Yes, sir!" Everyone was in high spirits as they descended into the cavern one after another, carrying detection tools to draw a preliminary map.

Meanwhile, Yang Yan looked terrified. He was hiding in a corner of the hall, patting himself down all over.

"What’s wrong?" Su Chen asked, appearing suddenly behind him and making him jump.

"I... I..." Yang Yan’s face was pale. He glanced around before whispering, "I think the Black Tuo Followers have done something to me."

"Oh?" Su Chen asked, surprised. "What makes you say that?"

"Look, each of you Core Seeds is leading a team. Aside from Wei Yufan, who doesn’t get involved in anything, the rest of you have been searching all over Ying Feng."

Yang Yan’s expression soured. "But over the last few days, we’re the only ones who’ve found anything. And every time we do, it’s something big."

"It’s strange, thinking back on it. How come I was the one who found all the clues? And we ran straight into Priest Black Tuo. If it hadn’t been for Chief Judge You, we would’ve been in serious danger."

’Er...’ Su Chen was speechless. ’This is the Black Tuo Followers’ main base in Ying Feng.’

’I’d already cordoned off the general area and had been leading the team around here for days. If Yang Yan *still* couldn’t find any clues, he should just quit being a Fourth-level Judge and go be a farmer.’

’Besides, if I hadn’t suspected someone was tailing me, I wouldn’t have come straight here in the first place.’

"’It is strange. Be sure to check yourself carefully...’ Su Chen started to say, but trailed off. He ended up just patting Yang Yan on the shoulder before turning to look down into the fissure."

’I wonder if this place has the method for controlling Divine Blood...’

To avoid arousing suspicion, Su Chen had come directly to the area where his senses were strongest, ignoring the other two locations.

The Priest Black Tuo hidden here was proof that his senses hadn’t failed him. This meant the odds of finding the so-called method to control Divine Blood were highest right here.

Su Chen didn’t go down himself. Anything they found would have to pass through him eventually, so he just waited above.
