My Possessive CEO: Trembling in His Arms-Chapter 187: Is He Serious About This?
Jack Yates replied without hesitation: "No."
He really wasn’t engaged to any other woman, so it didn’t count as lying to her.
Renee Winslow said firmly, "Okay, I believe you."
Jack’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and he spoke in a low voice, "Renee, I may not be a good person, but I’m not as bad as you think. If I were truly going to get engaged to someone else, I’d let you go."
Renee Winslow: "Because of that, I believe you, but why do you want to..."
Jack interrupted her, "You don’t need to know why; you just need to know it’s for your own good."
Renee Winslow laughed, "For my own good, yet I don’t have the right to know. Jack, what kind of... never mind, you’re busy, I’ll go cook a steak."
She wanted to ask, "What kind of care is that? Are we even in a mutual relationship?"
But it would be laughable to voice such thoughts, how could they be equals? They never were.
Jack Yates’ status and position were right there; she wasn’t in a position to talk about "equality."
She admitted, Jack indeed liked her, but his "liking" seemed more like a superior exercising control and conquest over desire, not the kind of equal and tolerant love between a man and a woman.
Standing up, she exhaled a long breath, then walked into the kitchen and took out two steaks from the fridge.
She smiled at Shay: "Let’s add a dish and cook two steaks."
Shay blinked, "Can you cook them?"
Renee Winslow earnestly replied, "I guarantee they’ll be cooked thoroughly!"
Shay smiled, "I can cook them thoroughly too, very thoroughly!"
Renee Winslow handed her a steak with a smile, "Then we’ll each cook our own, and see whose turns out worse."
Shay laughed, nudging her, "Who does that? Most people compete to cook better, not worse!"
Renee Winslow, while unwrapping the steak, replied with a laugh, "Well, since neither of us is a great chef, we might as well see who’s worse."
The two chatted and cooked the steaks together. Indeed, they were fully cooked, very thoroughly due to the distraction from their conversation, and even overcooked.
Fortunately, the beef was tender, and even though it was overcooked, it still tasted good. Having mastery would make it even more delicious.
Renee Winslow ate the steak she cooked with satisfaction, proudly giving a thumbs up in praise, "Looks like our cooking skills aren’t that bad."
As she said this, Shay was sipping seaweed egg soup and nearly choked upon hearing that.
Renee Winslow burst into laughter but ended up choking, clutching her chest and coughing rapidly.
Shay hurried to pat her back, "No wonder Mr. Yates doesn’t allow you to talk during meals; maybe he is strict for a reason."
Renee Winslow coughed and patted Shay’s arm, "Cough, cough... whose side are you on? That kind of military-style management is suffocating!"
Shay honestly replied, "Mentally, I’m on your side, but for the sake of my paycheck, I have to listen to Mr. Yates, or what if he decides to fire me?"
Renee Winslow: "...Cough, cough, cough."
What Shay said made sense, and she had no rebuttal.
As they exchanged awkward glances, Renee Winslow’s phone rang. She quickly picked it up, seeing it was Sanga calling, promptly answered. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Hello, Sanga, what’s up? Do you miss me?"
Listening to Renee Winslow’s cheerful voice, Sanga hesitated for a moment, asking, "What are you doing?"
Renee Winslow smiled and replied, "I’m having a meal; have you eaten?"
Sanga didn’t answer her directly and asked again, "With Mr. Yates?"
Renee Winslow: "No, he’s busy and hasn’t come home tonight; it’s just me and Shay."
Sanga knew Shay was the nanny Jack Yates specifically hired for Renee Winslow.
Renee Winslow: "What’s up? Are you back in Northcity today?"
Sanga: "No, it’s only the second today; I’m returning to Northcity on the fifth."
Renee Winslow chuckled, "I thought you were back; I wanted to hang out with you."
Suddenly, Sanga raised her voice, "Renee."
Renee Winslow moved the phone slightly away and replied with a smile, "I can hear you; no need to shout."
Sanga’s voice softened, "What, what are you really thinking?"
The smile vanished from Renee Winslow’s face, her tone serious, "Do you have something to tell me?"
Sanga mustered up the courage to say, "Did you see the net this afternoon..."
But before she could finish, the call ended automatically.
Renee tried calling back, but couldn’t get through. After several attempts, the message "The number you are calling is not in service area" kept coming up.
The last part of Sanga’s sentence was "Did you see the net...", net what?
Renee Winslow’s heart skipped a beat; what exactly was Jack Yates hiding from her?
She picked up the phone, wanting to call Jack Yates, her finger hovering over the screen, but she put it down again.
She had just called him, and she had agreed to trust him; calling again now would seem erratic.
She wouldn’t call; if he doesn’t move, neither will she; she would wait for Jack Yates to explain himself.
The black industrial-grade Red Flag drove into Thatcher Manor, and once the car was parked, Jack Yates didn’t get out immediately. His brow was furrowed, and his voice was filled with icy chill, "Seems like Secretary Lowell thinks there’s no future in Starkwood and wants to seek higher positions elsewhere?"
Secretary Lowell apologized repeatedly, "Please calm your anger, Mr. Yates. It was indeed my oversight this time."
Jack Yates: "Don’t let it happen again."
If it weren’t for him having programmers add monitoring functions to Renee Winslow’s phone beforehand, today’s matter would have been exposed.
Jack Yates called Harvey Lancaster, coldly instructing, "Send two people to follow Kevin Lynch to Vintara."
Vintara was not only Renee Winslow’s hometown but also Sanga’s hometown.
Harvey Lancaster agreed without hesitation, "Alright."
Kyle Sheffield, standing aside, frowned, and after Harvey hung up, he told him, "You shouldn’t have agreed."
Harvey Lancaster’s expression was serious, "Third Master Yates ordered it; I just do my part."
Kyle Sheffield stood up, shook his head, and smiled, "I think I’ll find a way to apply to handle the market in Euporia and avoid working with a fool like you, lest I get dragged down someday."
Harvey Lancaster didn’t think he was dumb; he saw his actions as absolute loyalty, exactly what Jack Yates wanted—absolute loyalty!
Kyle Sheffield saw right through Harvey Lancaster’s thoughts, and with a smile, remarked, "What you’re pushing away for him, once he realizes, you’ll be in trouble, he might even want to kill you."
Harvey Lancaster’s usually expressionless face showed a hint of confusion.
Kyle Sheffield said, "How about this: I’ll go with Lawyer Lynch to Vintara, don’t tell Third Master. No matter what happens in the future, I promise he won’t take it out on you."
Harvey Lancaster wasn’t a fool; with a little thought, he could guess most of it.
Hesitant for a moment, he unprecedentedly asked, "Is Third Master serious about her?"
Kyle Sheffield didn’t answer directly, and instead, with a smile, asked, "What do you think?"
Harvey Lancaster was silent; he wasn’t sure.
Kyle Sheffield patted him on the shoulder, "You haven’t been with Third Master for just a day or two, when have you seen him so attentive to a girl before?"
