Chapter 169: Chapter 169: "Do You Want to Leave or Stay?

Ever since Renee Winslow’s car accident, Jack Yates has heard this kind of talk more than once.

Aiden Grant had asked if he wanted to send Renee Winslow abroad.

Simon Forrester also asked, and now Kyle Sheffield again.

Just last night, before his mother boarded the plane, she called him, asking if he regretted it now.

"Regret what?"

"If your girlfriend were the daughter of some department head or a bureau chief, or at the very least the daughter of some company president, this wouldn’t have happened. Those people, even if they wanted revenge on you, wouldn’t dare touch a hair on your girlfriend’s head."

Jack Yates’s voice was cold, with a hint of impatience: "Their target was me, Renee was just collateral damage."

Chloe Bell let out a mocking laugh: "Felix, stop deceiving yourself. You know clearly whether it was collateral damage or intentional." She continued, "If the target was really you, why was your car fine? And yet, the car with that female student had an accident?"

Her words were sharp and pierced straight into Jack Yates’s heart, revealing the reality he had to face.

Chloe Bell continued, "They fear the Yates Family and Bell Family, so they won’t harm you openly. But they’ll take it out on that female student as revenge on you, because they know clearly, even if that female student ends up disabled or dead, we wouldn’t interfere."

Jack Yates gripped his phone hard, veins bulging on the back of his hand, his gaze fierce as he stared at a point, with a violent aura emanating from him.

Chloe Bell said, "Felix, listen to Mom’s advice, break up with her. That female student is only your weak spot and brings you no benefit."

"You’re still young, not even thirty yet. There’s a long life ahead, and your career is just starting, don’t let her hold you back. Rest assured, after you break up, we won’t make it difficult for her."

"Breaking up with her is actually beneficial for her too. Once you break up, she has nothing to do with you, and your business rivals won’t use her to threaten you anymore."

"Breaking up is a win-win situation, why can’t you understand?"

Jack Yates hesitated. Over the past year, whenever Renee Winslow wanted to leave, he would be furious and resort to actions that made her hate him just to forcefully keep her by his side.

But now that Renee Winslow was willingly staying with him, Jack Yates found himself uncertain.

Keeping her by his side, was it right or wrong?

Would such accidents happen again?

This time Renee Winslow was lucky and survived, but what about next time?

If another accident happened to Renee Winslow, reaching an irreversible point, what would he do?

But Jack Yates knew in his heart that now, with the intense rivalry with the Huo and Zhao families, every day Renee Winslow stayed with him was a day of danger.

As his mother said, the Huo and Zhao families dare not harm him openly because they cannot afford to offend the Yates and Bell Families, but they know everyone in the Yates Family opposes him being with Renee Winslow, so they are not afraid to harm Renee Winslow.

After a long silence, Jack Yates said in a light tone, "We’ll talk about it when the time comes."

He had to wait until Renee Winslow fully recovered to make a decision.

Kyle Sheffield did not say more and turned to discuss work matters.

-

They say it takes a hundred days to heal bones and muscles.

Renee Winslow’s arm was broken, and it would take at least three months to fully recover.

In the blink of an eye, it was the day Renee Winslow was discharged from the hospital. By then, Northcity had fully cooled, and the snow was beginning to fall.

However, the snow melted as soon as it fell, only slowly accumulating into white on the greenery.

Renee Winslow visibly lost a lot of weight. Before the car accident, she weighed a little over 100 pounds, around 110, but now, she was down to just 90 pounds.

Partly because she was injured and had no appetite while in the hospital, and partly because of the sadness from driver Carrington’s death.

Driver Carrington had died while taking her away. If she hadn’t gone out that day, Carrington wouldn’t have needed to drive her, and the accident wouldn’t have happened.

As she got into the car, Renee Winslow instinctively gripped the handle tightly with her right hand; her left hand still dared not exert force, and the back of her right hand tensed so tightly that her knuckles turned pale.

Jack Yates held her right hand, gently squeezing her cold fingers, and comforted her in a low voice, "Don’t be afraid, I’m here, nothing will happen again."

Renee Winslow tilted her head and leaned against Jack Yates.

Jack Yates hugged her shoulder: "Sleep, rest on me for a while."

-

Knowing Renee Winslow would be discharged today, Aunty Warren led the household staff to thoroughly clean the place from top to bottom. Though cleaning was a daily routine, today they cleaned more meticulously, wiping every corner repeatedly.

Aunty Warren even specially prepared a pot with burning charcoal for Renee Winslow to step over to ward off bad luck when she returned.

Before lifting her leg to step over the pot, Renee Winslow turned her head to glance at Jack Yates, wanting to see his expression.

After all, someone like him, with pure materialistic beliefs, would probably be displeased by this superstitious act.

Yet, Jack Yates did not show any dissatisfaction, even asking her, "Can you step over it? If not, I’ll carry you."

Renee Winslow directly lifted her leg and stepped over, turning back to look at him, saying proudly, "I’m not short-legged."

Jack Yates’s mouth twitched, revealing a trace of a smile.

After lunch, Renee Winslow returned to the bedroom to rest.

Jack Yates changed into comfortable home wear and lay beside her.

Renee Winslow lay on her side, nestled into his arms, rubbing her face against his chest.

Jack Yates kissed her forehead, his voice hoarse, "Sleep, sleeping more will help you recover faster."

Renee Winslow: "I don’t want to sleep, just want to lean on you like this."

Jack Yates patted her head, speaking in a deep voice, "Renee, I want to discuss something with you."

"What’s up?" Renee Winslow lifted her head from his embrace.

Jack Yates looked at her intently, asking softly, "Could you take a two-year break from school?"

Renee Winslow’s eyes widened suddenly, "What do you mean?"

Seeing her startled expression, Jack Yates gently patted her back, "I’m afraid of you getting hurt again, so I want you to take a two-year break from school, during which you..."

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

Renee Winslow blinked her misty eyes, asking uncertainly, "Are you planning to confine me to Thatcher Manor like you did during the summer?"

Meaning that for two years, she would have to live like a prisoner in Thatcher Manor, going nowhere without Jack Yates’s permission.

Jack Yates explained, "It’s not confinement, it’s protection, so..."

Renee Winslow smiled bitterly, "But it’s essentially the same as imprisonment, isn’t it?"

Jack Yates’s throat moved, his voice hoarse, "There’s another way, I could send you abroad."

Renee Winslow opened her mouth but said nothing.

Jack Yates asked, "Do you want to take a break from school, or go abroad?"

Renee Winslow lowered her eyes and shook her head, "I, I don’t know."

She really didn’t know how to choose.

Jack Yates seemed to offer two choices, but essentially, he gave her none.

Going abroad—what country could a Chinese language major like her go to?

If she chose to go abroad, would Jack Yates be happy?

If not abroad, would it mean a two-year school hiatus?

No matter the path, she didn’t want to choose.

But in this situation, having a choice was no longer up to her.

"You decide for me." Renee Winslow lowered her head, "Jack, you decide."

Jack Yates took a coin from the drawer and placed it in her hand, "Heads for going abroad, tails for a school break."

Renee Winslow glanced at the year on the one-yuan coin, 1989, the year Jack Yates was born.

"Okay." She took the coin and tossed it up.

The coin soared high, then fell heavily.

Jack Yates quickly clasped it in his hands, then extended them to Renee Winslow, looking at her deeply, "Renee, do you think it’s heads or tails?"
